Leni woke up with instructions set in; “take meds”. She remembered, just like Mom said she was supposed to. She was proud of herself.
“Leni Loud, not Leni Proud” somebody corrected.
“I know that.” Leni responded, reaching over to her nightstand, where she'd put the pills before. At least, she was pretty sure. Yep, the bottle had her name on it. Why wouldn't it? It was hers.
Touching it (she remembered how to do this part now), she twisted the cap while also pressing it down. She didn't need Lori this time, or any other time so she intended. Mom had shown her how to fill out the forms that morning, she was on her own from now on.
Wait. She was on her own. Where was Lori? Leni remembered, Lori snuck out to sleep over at Bobby's for his birthday and she promised not to tell.
She reached in and took one of the pills while thinking this and threw it in her mouth. She remembered not to chew it, the bitter taste seared into her thoughts from all of the other times. She washed it down with a glass of water from the nightstand and smiled. She was ready for the day.
She passed her brother in the hall. He was smiling but looked wrong, sweating a bit. What from?
“Morning, Lincoln!” she greeted.
“H-hey, Leni! Take your pills yet?” his voice cracked.
She didn't think he knew about her meds. “Yeah!” she responded cheerily anyway.
Lincoln smiled brightly. He was fully dressed. Leni's wandering mind snapped back to the bright display on her bedside clock; 8:40.
“You're up earlier than usual.” she noted.
Lincoln laughed unusually. “Ha ha, yep. Dad made me sweep the driveway early.”
Leni smiled and continued downstairs but ended up being stopped short.
“Hey wait. Leni?” Lincoln said suddenly.
“Yes?”

Lincoln had his ear against a cup on Leni's door. She had apparently just woken up.
He heard her say faintly; “I know that.”
Rollover from sleep-talking he supposed.
He listened for the bottle opening until it came and backed away from the door, chucking the cup out of sight. He was nervous. He wanted to see his new sister in action, but didn't want to give himself away. He knew that Leni wouldn't normally notice, but he was about to finally see her true potential. He imagined she might be a genius now at best. Finally, he wouldn't have to bargain with Lisa anymore.
The door swung open and Leni began walking towards the stairs. She usually went into the kitchen straight away like a horse with blinders. The hall was on fire once and she didn't see, but she noticed him, the first significant sign.
“Morning Lincoln!” she greeted.
Lincoln put on his best adult voice.
“H-hey, Leni! Take your pills yet?” his voice cracked. It needed work.
“Yeah!” she responded cheerily.
She tilted her head, squinting at him for a moment. Lincoln countered his increasing anxiety with a bigger, faker smile.
“You're up earlier than usual.” she said.
Lincoln was caught off guard completely. He'd once seen Leni push her alarm clock behind the nightstand when Dad told her to have it 'Fall Back'. She would never notice something like that.
He effortlessly spun a lie. “Ha ha, yep. Dad made me sweep the driveway early.” Darn it. He wasn't good at this.
Leni seemed satisfied and moved her attention back to the way downstairs. Lincoln figured that if she'd noticed the time, following her around would definitely be suspicious. He would watch from upstairs.
“Psst!”
Lincoln whipped his head toward Lisa's room to see her peeking at the two of them. She pantomimed, pointing to her head and shuttering her fingers down her cheeks. “Feeling. Feeling.” she mouthed silently.
He forgot to ask, part of Lisa's study.
“Hey wait. Leni?” he asked.

Her eyes shifted up. She was thinking, something Lincoln had never seen.

Lincoln tried to remember what he was supposed to follow up with, but had lost his sister's interest. She was gone now on her way to the kitchen.

“Sorry, Lisa.”
“It's my fault. I sent a boy to do a man's work, or woman's work in this case.” she lisped.

Luan leaned over to put her mug in the sink and almost dropped it when Leni shouted.
“What did you just call me!?”
Luan reeled back, startled and confused. “Uhhh... are you alright?”
Leni didn't reply. Her eyebrows crunched about and her fingers seemed to start gestures but her arms stayed in place. She looked upset.
Luan frowned. Leni was acting funny, but not 'ha-ha' funny. No material there.
Luan reached out to touch her sister, but she shut her eyes tightly and put her hands to her head.
Leni gritted her teeth. “Stoooopppp...” she moaned.
“Stop what?” Luan asked, concerned.
Leni opened her eyes, a blatant fear in them. Her mouth trembled and without a word, she headed back upstairs.
“Leni?” Luan called after her.
