I'm more or less alone in that camp, though. I just feel that for a first episode, it did a poor job of hooking the viewer. I honestly would have turned it off had I not already seen a few episodes from the latter half of the first season.
I guess it put a lot of focus on getting across the themes of the three Gems, and maybe that was important? But Steven didn't come off as particularly likable, and gave a fairly bad first impression in my opinion, and the whole episode just felt lacking in general. The only thing it seemed to nail was getting across the general themes for Pearl, Amethyst, and Garnet.

Well, it was just jamming the characters into a basic princess and knight romance formula, but a bunch of details swapped around. So Lapis was the trapped princess (reporter) who gets freed from the tower (mirror / fusion), and Peridot was the dashing hero (geeky technician) who will the dragon (help solve the Cluster problem). Not that they directly related to one another, but both problems were looming at the time and the order of resolution was unknown, so eh.
The swap was the personalities; Lapis seemed more worldly (a conclusion reached almost exclusively from her acceptance of the fart joke), while Peridot was the close-minded one who, reluctantly at first, is awkwardly picking up the foreign culture, often to humorous effect.
