Some years ago his first "professional" stint as furry artist was doing stuff for Hard Blush, and the kid let it go to his head, thinking he's the hot shit who deserves thousands of watchers who will shower him with money and praise.
For a while that's how it went (he didn't exactly have thousands of followers though), until he made a journal on FA where he publically shat all over the people who commission art from him and repost it elsewhere (despite giving credit to him still), calling them parasites who ride on the coattails of "hardworking, successful artists" to gain attention and fame.
Even when he got called out on it by other artists, he resumed slamming everyone in the journal until he eventually caught enough flak that he was forced to delete it. But did he learn his lesson? Nope. He went on like nothing happened.
After some time, he opened up a Patreon page, but as a consequence of his slamming on people who give him money, the number of his patrons was incredibly low; and instead of learning some humility and issuing a public apology or anything, he would post one journal after another, butthurt that he isn't a popufur with many fans who makes several thousands of $ per month.
In the end, he ragequit and quietly closed his Patreon page.

Actually, the first term I ever heard for them was smilies, and that's what everyone called them when I first found the internet back somewhere in the mid 90s. Emoticons didn't actually come until later, when being an anime obsessed weeaboo became more frequent, and after that it just became a bit of a catch all. Nowadays cell phones call them emojiis, but that just feels weird to me unless you're using the pre-crafted pictures that come with them. If they're ASCII characters I just keep calling them emoticons, or emotes for short.

Hell, there are people who are draw some of the sickest most hardcore disgusting fetish porn and are perfectly nice people. It has nothing to do with artists or even what you're interested in.
But furries -- who are the primary source for these kinds of people -- tend to attract people with issues who want to be accepted or loved no matter how trashy they are, and the people who are like that who can also draw tend to use it as a means to feel important, because their skills are almost always in demand. So they develop a following and use it to inflate themselves because they'll always have their fanclubs to tell them how great they are, and they can treat everyone else like crap.
And nowadays they can even make somewhat reliable money off of it, which further compounds the issue of being seemingly always right.
In more recent years it's been showing up in tumblr circles as people who get into the social justice movement. A lot of artists remain stagnant, with no improvements or attempts to innovate even after years of drawing.
