I can't help but like The Lion Guard. It would be a hell of a lot better if it weren't billed as a preschool cartoon, but it's not bad for what it is. It's been in a hiatus for the past two months, but episodes are supposed to return next week. /co/, as usual, won't care about that. The thread will last a couple of hours before dying.

Lion Guard made some bad design choices. Lots of people don't like the flash tweening (I personally don't, but it's not a dealbreaker since I can get used to it). The reason I dropped it was that the character designs other than lions and hyenas were styled differently and looked very out of place. Also I can't stand the kiddie voices.

Canon is always the subject of whims. It is attempting to be canon - the producers have said it takes place during The Lion King 2's time skip. Kovu, Nuka and Vitani are supposed to show up later on in the season. However, there are naturally a lot of retcons.
So, the best answer I can give you is that it is canon for now. Perhaps in the far off distant future, Disney will do something else with the Lion King franchise and choose to disregard it. However, they could choose to disregard The Lion King 2 as well.

Some episodes are good. Some episodes are bad. Most episodes are somewhere in the middle. I suppose the same could be said for just about any animated program. A lot of people don't want to give it a chance because it's billed as a preschool cartoon on Disney Junior, but it doesn't present itself as a preschool cartoon. It's really no different than the TV Y7 cartoons of the 90s that had to deal with FCC regulations.
Most people agree that the episode with Jasiri was the best. It was the one they decided to go with as the series premiere, so evidently they thought it was a strong episode as well.
