I played in a more casual heroic guild. we managed to down archie a couple months into t 18. I've unsubscribed and I'm waiting for legion. I'm also looking to get into a mythic guild. Is getting 60k DPS on mannoroth and Archie as a 712 frost mage and 70k+ as an arc mage on gorefiend decent enough. what bosses are good to use as a DPS benchmark? this is a good time to get into wow. legion is coming out in around 2 months, the pre patch will probably come out a month before that and it will probably take you around a month and a half to cap your character so you'll have a lot of things to do in game.
the best advice I can give is to not join a "new players" server because most of those are low pop realms that blizzard wants to populate and you'll have a hard time finding a decent guild. you should try to find a populated server that is mostly populated by the faction you're playing and has a lot people doing the content you want to do.
