Here's the thing: what better testing-ground for audience reactions to potential plot points than a non-canon side series?
This is RT testing the waters for a potential Pyrrha revival, fan reaction to it will likely determine if they go through with writing it in to the actual plot
the good news at least, is that doing so now once volume 4 has already been written means we don't have to worry about it becoming part of the plot next volume, but we may well see it in volume 5 if it happens at all

More or less.
And now that his coulda-been-boo-bear is dead and he's traveling with the actual main character, he's just going to get a shit ton more exposure.
Personally, I think it's good to give JNPR exposure. Having deuteragonists is a good thing.
But not at the cost of your actual main characters getting pushed into the background.
Pyrrha was forcefully given an unneeded amount of screen time in Volume 3 so we felt bad when she died, when they could have just given her less over multiple seasons and killed her later on, say volume 6, and achieved the same effect without sacrificing time that would have been better spent on an actual main character.
And by extention, Jaune also got a disgusting level of development. Between his bully arch in Volume 1 and getting swept up in Pyrrha's maiden nonsense in volume 3, you almost forgot that the show was called RWBY at times.
And then you have Blake, who receives so little development that her character can be summed up with "Muh faunus abuse." and now everyone thinks she's shit because of how little she seems to matter right now despite literally putting the B in RWBY.
Weiss is also starting to fade into the background a little bit, gettting sucked up into Ruby's development time, and RWBY feels like a co-pilot in her own series. Like Naruto did for the first half of his childhood.
The only RWBY that feels well balanced in terms of main character development is Yang.
If RWB_ got the same amount of development as Yang, and all members of JNPR got about a third of that development time, everything would be perfect.
