Question. Since antlers fall out, do animals actually feel anything in them?

If someone say had one shot up, would he feel anything beyond annoyance that he looks lopsided now?

Reasonable question!

I'm going to say that it's matter of how they're so connected to the rest of the body. Think about how the British government used to torture Irish people, Arabs, and other groups that it was entangled in imperialism with by having its agents grab people and forcibly pull their toenails and fingernails off. By themselves, the nails, especially if they're long, don't have sensation. Biting your nails doesn't mean much.

However, the force applied to the rest of your body by being yanked incredibly hard in one direction or another would cause very bad repercussions, I would think.
>>
>>3410001
this would come in handy if I wasn't terrible at drawing
>>
>>3410069

I mean against suspected agents (thought to be in the IRA and such), not that they did that to random fellows on the street.

>>

Did you ever manage a decent pun on the tiger tail donuts for the Gideon v. Tigers story?
>>
>>3410125
Once antlers are fully grown, they're basically dead bone. Cutting them would be like cutting fingernails. Only when they have velvet on do they feel pain.
>>
>>3410109
I love you anon and I want to be your friend
>>
>>3410148
Good to know, thanks.
>>
>>3410125
Oh, I mean that it would hurt the fucking fuck, probably giving you like a bruise from the pressure applied as well as a really painful migraine. You would most likely need to be hospitalized. But it wouldn't kill you. That's my thought.

I'm thinking also of Mythbusters episodes where like a measuring dummy tightly gripping a bat has the bat shot right by his hands (or something like that), and the force doesn't just break the wood but flows partly through it into the dummy's simulated flesh and causes all kinds of predicted damage all over its hands.
>>
>>3410148
Dead bone, but having it shot or an ax put to it suddenly wouldn't that still cause the force into the flesh?
>>
>>3410109
If weasels that meet all the stereotypes can get friends, couldn't you?
>>
>>3410199
It would, yes. You'd feel the force in your skull. However most animals with antlers, like moose, also have especially thick skulls designed to act as shock absorbers for impact with antlers.
After all, they use those antlers to headbutt and vie with other males. They're supposed to be able to take a beating -- it's not like this is a sensitive, delicate organ.

That said strong enough force would still hurt, it's just that there's no pain receptors or blood vessels in the antlers themselves.
>>
>>3410095
Let's face it, they probably did to random fellows every once in a while. I mean, they literally hunted abbos for sport.
>>
>>3410069
That is not how nail anatomy works at all.

Your finger and toenails have something called a nail matrix, which has nerve endings sensitive to stimuli, such as pain.

Biting your nails or cutting them doesn't hurt because the keratin itself has no nerve endings. But if you bite or clip too closely you start cutting into the nail matrix, which can hurt like a bitch.

The rest of your body has nothing to do with it; it's your protective keratin being ripped away and exposing/damaging the nerves and blood vessels contained underneath into the matrix.

Antlers being shaved or cut off, by all articles I can find, would be painless for a animal, since the antlers lack nerve endings. Obviously you start to get nerve endings at the base where the antler mets skull, but if an animal decided to get 'groomed' and have half of his rack removed, it would be like getting a haircut, so long as the antlers are fully grown--that is, dead bone.

If cows that give milk are creatures that just evolved naturally, would they be in Zootopia?

Are they in there? Some little end of a scene blink-and-you-miss it?

They're associated with humans now, but that doesn't necessarily imply anything. Sheep are domesticated, obviously, but they're natural creatures and they're there.

>>
>>3410199
Shock vibrations would probably ruin their day, but hunters tag antlers all the time and deer can lose them in impacts seemingly none the worse for wear.
suppose it would depend on how close to their skull the point of impact is? it's still attached to their heads, after all

also yeah the velvet is fur, blood and skin, though I'm not sure deer grow nerves in the velvet, since they literally scrape and tear it off the after a certain period.
>>
>>3410017
Answer! Deer, and presumably other antler-bearing quadrupeds. *can* feel their antlers, but in the same way you can feel your fingernails. There's no nerve endings in the antler itself, rather, where the antlers pass through the scalp a buck gains physical sensations of their antlers, and can tell when they are in contact with something else, or, through experience, about how big they are and when they would hit something, if said buck was going through a low or narrow door, for instance.

So: antler piercing could be a thing.

I seem to recall some scans that were posted in one of these /trash/ threads of a Zootopia children's book (maybe a Little Golden Book?), and in one scene, there is clearly a cow. Not a Cape buffalo, bison, wildebeest... a cow.

If pigs, sheep and horses exist (all which have wild/feral versions of course), I don't see why cows wouldn't.
>>
>>3410341
I guess it's that so much of this depends on the exact particulars. Getting shot right on the antlers by a sniper rifle where it hits just an inch from the head isn't the same thing as a grazing strike several inches away, at one of the tips.
>>

>new mercenary is terrorizing the city, taking out key predator targets
>he's outsmarting the police at every turn
>one phone pic later and the media's calling him the Black Fox
>Judy's suspicious right off the bat but scared of being right
>ends up in a fistfight with the fox and definitely recognizes some of his moves
>tries to reason with him and gets a taser to the gut for her troubles
>Bellwether calls Judy at home later that night to gloat
>admits she did all this just to fuck with the bunny
>planned to eventually release Nick so she could watch them suffer together
>but Wilde's proven surprisingly useful, so she's keeping him

Been hearing good things about this fic. Giving it a read now.

It's funny. I'm not usually the kind of person that reads fanfics, even of the stuff I love. But what I HAVE read of the Zootopia fics, have been well-written.

It almost makes me want to write my own (I write, but I've never done fanfic, and I don't tend to put my stuff online).

But I wouldn't know what to do. I'd want to explore other parts of the city, definitely. But would I make it completely OC? Would I incorporate, or merely name-drop, existing characters? Would anyone even be interested if I did either, without the focus being Nick and/or Judy?

I totally imagine that strip between Pack, Trip, and Hill to be the 'slummy' part of Zootopia: muggy and humid from being close to the rainforest district, yet concrete and brick. Everything is just a bit too wet, and therefor too hot or too cold, and dirty because of the smog getting caught in the moist air.

>>
>>3410668
Oh, you don't have to apologize. It's cool.

The thing is that I wanted to make it so that you have the first chapter as a whole being like a river with twists and turns-- comedically playing about-- and then end on a cliffhanger, where the tigers meet Gideon but haven't yet said anything to him (or them to him).

And then (kind of weird to go into spoilers, but you talked about it already), chapter two which isn't written yet but outlined in my mind would be the tigers talking to Gideon and trying to piece together him being this fox-prey-on-rabbit bully monster they're reported to find versus Gideon the confused, tired, and unsure softie at heart.

You don't have to, but maybe since you've had people tell you that your music goes on for too long and is too loud you could just redo the recording with the complete chapter one pastebin link? I hate to be demanding, though.

Then, I'd like to actually get started on doing audiobook recordings for Wilde's Card, which will probably take some time: audiobook recordings, unlike blind read throughs, take way more time to edit, and the first chapter is very, very long. I imagine this will take a few days to complete, so I'll do it piecemeal.

Police Saga is also on my list!

And once Stoutwell is finished, I'll be doing a... shit! I don't know if the author wants it blind, reading, then commentary, or just an audiobook! I'll need to remember to ask him! I'd like to get a chapter every one or two days done with that.

Keeping busy!

I'm sorry! I never stopped doing them, though! I mean, lots of things on my reading list are stuff that sort of just was given to me, and I don't want the authors to wait! The person writing Wilde's Card has been very patient indeed!

But I still do quick readings! 4 paragraphs was an instant sort of thing, and so was Tender Fangs!

These recordings do take a long time, because I'm no longer just doing oneshot vocaroo stuff, but now I can edit them with Audacity and make them better! It does affect the speed at which I can make them, though.

My voice is kind of shot, but is there anything you'd like me to read? I can do a written critique, too!

He puts a lot of time into his readings, Anon, for our entertainment and so people can improve their writing

It's hardly his fault that he needs to schedule a bit because he's got so many requests. If he just skipped around people would end up bitching but they've been super patient because they at least know that they're in the queue somewhere. I don't have a problem with it, at the end of the day we're getting a lot more out of it than he is, he's just being a really cool guy for us

If you're not doing anything right now, would you be willing to do a reading of the Musician Saga or whatever we want to call it, now with it up to chapter four?

I don't mean as in generating another recording. I mean literally just reading it, with your eyes, hah. And then maybe typing out a bunch of recommendations.

I've taken the notion of ripping it out of the Zootopian context to heart, but the changes that I've done to do that are superficial-ish. Like just names and references plus some descriptions. I'm interested in your commentary.

I can link the old version that was indeed Zootopian related, the four chapters, and the new one that isn't, four chapters also. If you want. No hurry, no nothing. I understand if you want to go to bed right now.

I haven't honestly decided, just yet. But I've been wanting to look into the Nocturnal District, because I would imagine a lot of the mammals that would live there probably don't have it easy.

Might have it center on a possum. Or another animal with a less-than-stellar reputation.

For me, I think because he's already a character with some sad undertones before the events of the movie, you wonder just how much punishment his facade can take before either shattering or hardening completely.

I dunno. I'll leave the bunker to help the boys, but often I prefer to just stay inside... Preferably if my foxes wanna come hang out with me. Maybe I should invite Nick to dinner in the bunker at some point? I know he loves blueberries, but... I've seen him snack before, but not have an actual meal, since we're always on the job. I guess I should find out what he likes.

>And since I really only leave to hang out with them, I usually end up helping them work, so not often. During the down-time between cons, though, we hang out in the van together. Just stuff like waiting for the latest con supplies to be picked up. As for food... You'd be surprised what I can do with a bag of predator military rations!

>Mostly because they're pretty disgusting otherwise. You'd almost think... Ah, nevermind.

I like drowsy! Even if it means morning routine stuff, because that's a sort of comfort born from an inability to put one's public face on. When you're that tired, and all you're trying to do is get the day started, you're unable to keep up a facade, so all they are is honest.

I'm feeling so sleepy too...

Well, you'll know what I mean. Thanks again for reading.

I'm also rather tense about this story, to be honest. Breaking it off from anything whatsoever to be not Zootopia, not X/Y/Z, but just 'Fantastic Beasts World'... is something that I wish I could get like a third and forth opinion about from other readers, you know?

Judy has a little fox doll and Nick has a bunny, too. The clothes thing is just practical (albeit cute) but that they both have a little dolly of each other is super cute.

I would have figured it'd open it up moreso! We're beyond literary folk claiming that anthropomorphic animal stories are childish or not popular, so this'd fit right up the alley for some sort of publisher. Heck, the label 'young adult' is just a genre of simply written stories with some fantastical elements, yet I'm sure it'd be a larger audience than just a Zootopia fanfiction tag or these threads.

Its very clearly a piece with a lot of personal importance put in it.

I would warn you, though: personal pieces are the biggest sufferers of masterpiece syndrome. Never let the quality of the work deteriorate because you think its not good enough for how your mind sees it, nor how others interpret it no matter how much it differs from how you do.

Kind of like J. D. Salinger having all those books in his safe that he wrote just for himself... I have no idea why anyone would want to read them, other than to learn more about J. D. Salinger. Cause they weren't written for me or anyone else! They were just for him!

But your work can be enjoyed by others, most definitely, and you don't need a Disney movie tag to sell it at all.

>>3411718
I like clumsy sleepyheads too! The reality is sleeping with another human is difficult because we're gangly creatures who like to move in our sleep and can only sleep in certain positions. I know I can't sleep when I have hair tickling my face, but that's where their head is if I'm the big spoon! And I know I'm not the best pillow, even though I like it when people sleep on top of me...

>Its not his best film
It's my favorite of his, to be honest. Maybe up there with Moonrise Kingdom.

But I feel it kinda started a new "era" of Wes Anderson, in the sense that stop motion animation really allowed him to take his style waaaay further than he had before, and the fact that he was following an existing story kinda started a trend of his films following a more, hm, "typical" narrative, more suspenseful than his previous films.

But yeah, it's just a heck of fun. Only thing I didn't like about the visual aspect was that some of the puppets were made digitigrades (the foxes & some other species). It only makes them look much weirder. Other than that, the stop motion was real fricking neat.

I think a large amount of guys that think honestly enough about their sexual preferences would file themselves as 'bi'. I suspect most would be about a kinsey 0.5 to 1, but society is weirdly binary about sexuality - if you would fuck 90% of women but 0.1% of dudes, I'd round that up to straight, but society firmly slots you into the 'bi' category. I call myself bi but I'm a kinsey 1.5 at most.

It's all good, I reckon. Call yourself what you wanna call yourself and fuck who you want to fuck (assuming they consent, of course).

objection! I would say at least 10-15 years passed between Judy's death and Nick becoming chief of police (this takes time you know), so July might be well aware she's dead, but due to them being rather distant relatives she only knew Judy from the newspaper articles.
>>
>>3411988
Winter Snuggles was so good... I had some idea when I was asleep that when Juyd came out of the shower and her face was super duper fluffly, she'd ask Nick if he wanted to see an impression.

And then she'd put her ears down...

And Nick would give up.

"I'm a Q Tip."

I just thought that was funny... I loved reading your story, and I love the sleepy head pics, but I gadda get to sleep now too!
