Morbi's tumblr states it a lot, but the general rule of thumb you're supposed to understand with opossums is that they can't coexist with ANYTHING magical. Fruits of life are pretty much some of the most primal magical entities in that realm, so that's kinda easy to piece together.
Mary Hallia shenanigans are 12 pages in and coming up pretty nice, I'll probably be able to deliver the first of the two chapters once the hiatus ends.

The fandom's almost on the cusp of spilling over at this point, thanks to representation from other webcomics and word-of-mouth. The most recent chapter was a slow boil of political and character intrigue combined with shipping and drunken tomfoolery, so I'd imagine that that's not attracting the masses.
Just wait for the next big (good) fight scene, and Poppy will reach "now passe on /co/" status.

Halia's bit made it clear they were Balls Deep with the mob at one point, and added context to her arranging the insurance deal.
Shiba was just a 'quirky fashion queen'. It's at least more interesting than just making them gay.

As much as I want Hallia to be developed as a character, it's a damn shame that her sexual identity is currently the only interesting thing about her. It makes me dilute the other characters to their sexualities to compensate, and I can't unsee Poppy's troupe as a wandering pride parade.

I don't think the transexual or gay stuff was an intentional distraction from that, but it did the job anyway.
There's a lot of little details in this comic you can pick up on if you don't obsess over the sexuality stuff. This is one for the archive bingers, for sure.

The weird thing about Hallia's mob connections is that I'm not really interested. It's cool that she had mob connections, yeah, but she now holds a pity job assisting a hyper-competent assistant to the mayor, and nobody in the mob proper directly addresses her as an "old friend" or something similar.
The only think I can think of is that Hallia wants to distance herself from her old life as much as possible, and I think that says more than enough about her old life in and of itself.
