Honestly I'm not as noble as you probably think since I'd love to make money off of drawing this kind of thing one day. If I do though I'd rather it be either commissions or a pack/book with something actually substantial in it.
Overall I like the idea of artists making money, it seems like far from the most unfair thing we have to put up with economically. It's just that there are a lot of people who act scummy with their practices when it comes to paypacks. I don't like pirating personally, but I don't blame people too much anymore for it because even with the few packs I was interested enough in to purchase I still felt disappointed with some.

And yeah, I've never really been comfortable with the idea of charging monthly for stuff on Patreon personally. It seems like it could be a letdown to fans and put stress on the artist to produce constantly on a limited timeframe, leading to lower quality in some cases. I thought there was an option on the sight letting people charge per update on there but I don't really see people using it.

Sounds like you might have a bit too much anxiety about what other people think maybe? The thing to remember about being an artist, especially in this kind of niche, is not everyone will like your stuff. A lot of times that isn't because of quality either.
And if I were on the other end of a bad trade I might feel disappointed, but if the other artist explained themselves personally I might understand. I wouldn't exactly say I got nothing out of it either since with every picture I do I try to experiment at least a little.

I don't see too much wrong with that if it's just a commission and the quality is worth it. Supply and demand after all. Hell, it's not unusual for normal artist to be commissioned for much higher numbers when creating something, whether for an individual or company. If they were shit though in ways that didn't justify the price tag I'd understand.
