Considering it plays like one of those tablet/browser games before it was a thing, it wouldn't be very difficult.
I'd keep all the places and locations but make it have an over view interface. Some icons for commands like inventory and pets and what not. It would have animations of course and you walking avatar would (if you add one) would be your current selected pet.
How to actually improve the game'play' i have no fucking clue. This is coming from a guy who haven't touched Neopets since like 2002 maybe, thanks for the nostalgia.

Reboot the whole thing. Make the main game into a social focused f2p MMO with a cash shop for cosmetics and frivalous extra shit like the NC store currently does.
If you've ever seen the How To Train Your Dragon online game, you have a human avatar and your dragon(s) follow you around in the overworld and you can interact with them or ride/fly around on them as you like or race or duel against other player's dragons.
Basically just use the same formula of that game for Neopets and that'd be pretty much perfect. Have GMs run ingame events for the equivalent of plots and give special prizes to the first people to solve them.

Just a reminder to do your Altador Cup games, /npg/:
"To reach All-Star rank, you must score the equivalent of one of the following: 834 Yooyball wins, 2,500 Yooyuball draws, 1,667 Slushie Slinger games, 10,000 Make Some Noise games, or 10,000 Shootout Showdown games. Assuming you only played one of the games but reached the maximum games per day on it, it would take you 19 days to reach All-Star by winning Yooyuball games, 20 days playing Slushie Slinger, and 25 days playing Make Some Noise or Shootout Showdown. If playing each game to maximum each day, it would take 6 days to reach All-Star. The competition starts on June 1 and ends on June 29."
Meaning if you want All Star, you should be maxing out AT LEAST Yooyuball, and starting today.
Otherwise, if you don't get maxing out those games, and today, you probably won't get All-Star.
And yes, you want All-Star, because there will be a prize shop, and like last year, there's bound to be valuable things, like Morphing Potions, Paint Brushes, exclusive wearables, stat boosters and Battledome Weapons and more.
Those prize points matter.

Definitely nostalgia. I'd say most of the people still playing are the ones who've been on the site since its glory days.
As for what keeps people on the site, it's harder to say because there are so many different aspects that appeal to different people. I've known people who were really into the Battledome, others who just wanted all the avatars, and there's a small but thriving group who are all about the various creative contests.
Although most people probably just come on to do their dailies.

Well, for starters, you can take 1 level 2 or higher pet and gamble with Count von Roo: http://www.neopets.com/worlds/deadlydice.phtml
Until the end of the hour, if you beat him in a Dice Roll, you gain levels equal to your winning rolls. More than 1 is from ties.
Winning or losing a tie makes you win/lose Count's Avatar.
Note that he goes back to sleep at the end of the hour, and does this every Neopian Midnight.
If you have Neocash, buy a Faerie Quest Fortune Cookie or Training Fortune Cookie from the NC Mall, when they're in stock.
Use whenever, each gives you a few days of one Faerie Quest a day, or each Training session's time being reduced by a multiple of 5% between 30 & 75 percent.
Note: If you get a Faerie Quest Fortune Cookie, it may be worth it to save it and only use it when you're on an Obelisk Battleground Team that grants the Quest Refresh Boon.
Those would be Seekers, Sway, or The Awakened (Randomly chosen Boons.).

Note that joining that is closed, and none of the current factions can grant Quest Refresh, so check back between the Monday and the Wednesday after next.
Check Coltzan's Shrine every 12 hours. Can boost 1 random stat, supposedly, can boost by more than 1, and supposedly favors lower leveled pets.
Kitchen Quest can be done 10 times per day. Avoid really expensive quests, as prizes can be only NP and/or items, and the stat boosts go to a RANDOM pet on your account. Try with 3 or fewer pets.
Rarity 102 or higher Scratchcards from the Ice Caves or Haunted Fairground can also give a random pet of yours a level, but only 5 of any kind per day, IIRC. Also, which type you get from the Kiosk is random, & has a time limit between purchases.

Save up 60k (Man those things went up) and get a Cursed Elixir. Use that to one-hit KO the Kreludor Defense bot in the Battledome for daily chance at free codestones. The robot has the best chances of dropping them.

I'd suggest selling the Nerkmid for easy money. You can use them at the Alien Aisha Vending Machine for a small chance of getting a paint brush, but I wouldn't suggest it.
Red codestones are for training high-level pets and make good money as well.
For beginner training I'd suggest the Krawk Island academy. You can only train pets up to level 40 there, but you pay in dubloons, which are hella cheap right now.

It's a good introduction to how puzzle-based plots on Neopets work, and you get some prizes and another fairly good daily out of it at the end.

I don't RS everyday and it really depends if Neggs spawn in Foods. Coins are a bit harder to get. Sometimes I get nothing because of all of the site lag. Generally about 100k to 500k if I get a good haul. I have Premium, so I generally sell Nerkmids to get cash. Could have a lot more, but I don't sell Codestones. Going to save up and sell them when another war plot comes along.

Random thought: try getting into NT issue 750. The editor usually gives out prizes for people who get into special issues (like the Christmas issue, Valentine's issue, and so on), and every 50th issue is extra large and the prizes are usually exclusive items. I got into issues 650 and 700, and they gave out Neopian Times Coins for both of those. I sold the first one for 31 mil and the second for around 10 mil.
The other creative contests (storytelling, art gallery, BC, etc.) also give out prizes that tend to be fairly valuable. If you can draw or write, it might be worth trying.

You should submit the comic at least a month early, since those issues start getting submissions really early. There's a space for notes to the editor on the submission page, so you can leave a note saying you want it in 750. You'll also get the avatar if you get in.

As it turns out, this year, a qualifying score is 35, the amount a single goal gets you.
That is, for Shootout Showdown score sends to qualify as supporting your team and/or earning you Prize Shop points, you need 35 points, or 1 goal.
And since how accurate or how much or little time you use only affects if you get bonus points added or not, this is very easy.
You can send up to 401 qualifying scores per day in Shootout Showdown, and I did just that in about an hour.
Sadly, it would take you 25 days to get to All-Star like this, according to JN, and the Altador Cup ends on the 29th.
But if you want some quick and easy points and you're lazy....
Anyway, hopefully I didn't explain all this to people who already know. Sorry if I did.

"All I was trying to get across is that the Altador Cup counts the quality of your scores, not just the quantity, as something to be aware of, but there is definitely no single point where that score hurts. There are so many variables at play here, it's impossible to pinpoint one specific spot where the line is drawn.
Look at this way, Team 1 is playing Team 2. Assuming here as an example, that they have the same number of people playing today who all send the same number of scores. Team 1 all plays to the best of their ability, some will be great scores and some will probably be on the low side, so overall Team 1 will come out with some kind of average score in the middle. Team 2 has half of their team playing the best they can, but the other half are all sending minimum score games... Who do you think wins that match? Probably Team 1. However, if everyone in Team 1 sends a great score, but only one score each, and team 2 sends a lot of average scores, they could come out ahead. In a real setting, there are different numbers of people sending different amounts of scores at different qualities, so all you can do is play your best for your team, and that will always help. "

Well, if the categorization of Jelly Neo's Wadrobe app is any indicator, the issue is the halo takes the hat zone, but the parka needs both the hat, and robe zone, IIRC.
Kinda makes me wish they'd make the halo "occupy" a different zone, but keep it's position the same. Like as a foreground or thought bubble zone item.

Extension writer here. Firefox basically broken their extension API like a year or two ago. My extension used click properties that would fire off Javascript events to get state to line up correctly and look "more human". Firefox decided that allowing extension code to run code in the page context without doing a bunch of crazy shit was too "insecure" so they basically broke every Greasemonkey script for automation.
Anyway, the script still works if you're using a crazy old version of Firefox with a crazy old version of Greasemonkey. Last I checked--like a year ago--some people had success using Chrome and some sorta Greasemonkey extension.
Other than moving to the most recent version of Github (https://github.com/NeoquestBro/Scripts), and praying, there's not much I can do for you.

Well, getting blasted is the only way to get the Avatar. So, unless you don't care about that, or don't like your pets taking damage outside the battledome -which is easily healed.- it's not that big a concern.
Of course, there are 2 results where simply nothing happens. No blast, no chance at the Avatar, nor a valuable item.

Released on December 18th 2015, this recently released Rarity 89 item can currently be found in user shops for under 16,000 NPs, or, if you're patient/lucky/focused, restocked for close to 10K.
Yet it deals 11 icons, and is in fact, is currently the cheapest 11 icons.
Keep in mind, it's hard to find any weapons that deal more than 12 icons that can be used more than once and are cheaper than 900,000 NP.
So it's a very good weapon if you want to get into battledome-ing more seriously. At least, price-wise.
