never made one, would like to

No, yes

I'm still trying to plan out my porn VN/Interface Game/CoC-like. I want to do it to learn
javascript
but I'm lazy and bad at everything.

i haven't actually made any game myself, but i have contributed to some indie games with 3d art.
>>
9 years of game design as a hobby on the side. I probably should do it more often but I have no drive because anything I make doesn't get much attention. So if nobody wants the game I don't feel like it's worth making it. Even though I make demos and have concepts visible of it.

I can't code, I can't write, I can't draw, I can't even come up with good ideas. I want to design a game but I suck too much shit.
>>
Every time I tried to make or even propose anything, people just shit on it, so I don't even bother anymore.
>>
>>3146868
No, yes.

I've been dicking around with 3D modeling and I can script up basic shit but I can't actually draw and texture worth a damn.
>>
I wanted to make videogames, but gamergate misogynists have made the community a shitpile. The sooner they die off the better the world will be.

I'm currently developing a 2D RPG game in Unity.

I would like to make a game that features my fetishes of brain erasure and ferality

I made a lot of Marathon maps and Graal modding and stuff, but I sorta stopped with HL2 mapping. People get REALLY angry about the Source Engine for some reason.

then git gud faggots, people are not magically born with this kind of knowledge and skills, practice something, give modeling a try, draw shit, or even play around with an editor like ue4 or cryengine sandbox, those things can be very fun and easy to use once you get a hang of it, they are also free to use.

>le just do it(tm) by Nike :^) ps here is my work u cant do
I don't like this sort of advice. I think a lot of people who want to do game dev get the fun of playing games confused with the fun of making them. They're very different.

People like you or I who can just crank stuff out can do so because it's fun; I personally do level design (inb4 reeeee) but I only got gud at it because I got my start with Marathon's Forge and Anvil editors, and played more with those than I did the game itself. Same for artists, good artists got gud by liking to draw and doing it constantly.

There's the old "u need 10,000 hrs of practice before u git gud :^)" advice, but that shouldn't be taken as a call to grind something you don't like hoping you'll strike it rich or end up with a cult hit or whatever -- where have you already put a good 8,000 hours since you were a kid and would gladly put another 2 or 3 right now this second?

If it feels like grinding to git gud at something, stop doing it. It's not for you. Find something that makes you happier and do that. If aspects of game dev just make you frustrated or sad, stick to playing games instead and pick up cabinetry or writing or electronics or something that you do find fun enough to git gud at naturally just because you're gonna do it whenever you can anyway.

What's weird aboot them famalam
>>
>>3183074

well yeah, i should have been a little bit more specific, game developing is not for everyone, but if they are serious about it, they should at least try to find things that suits them or they actually enjoy doing the most.

there's literally courses and information for free everywhere, if they want to learn something properly is just a matter of applying themselves.
>>
It's weird how I can enjoy programming as typing shit in and making shit happen just seemed so fun for me...but I have very low drive to learn a whole lot more about it. I could be applying myself better but it's so easy to just be lazy about it and use what I already know to make stuff. My own knowledge is enough to make a full game, at least.
>>
>>3183702
I've heard that this is a common reason to love programming. I never found it myself, but good on you, brah. It's not like you NEED to be a bit hacker wizard to make games.
>>
>>3183772
I've had interests in game design aspects itself, but mainly did programming ever since I got introduced to LUA during playing Roblox so long ago. So yeah at least I have interest in it, that's a start.

Ask specific questions.
>>
I programmed a Spongebob game at a previous job. I found it easy because we had a good tool chain. Our artist had a hard time because Nickelodeon was anal about Spongebob's holes being exactly on-model and ended up having to re-do a bunch of the art assets. After that I moved onto a more serious corporate programming job, so I only have the one game and I don't even include it on my resume because it's so far from what I do now.
>>
>>3195568
You worked on an official Spongebob game? Immediately Battle for Bikini Bottom came to mind cause that was my shit but I'm assuming it wasn't that. If not, are you allowed to say what game it was?
>>
>>3190912
Don't be rude anon

>>3192245
I'm pretty bad with words so it'll probably so wrong. How do you make a "room"? Like one area is a set size and if you scroll to the very end you go to a different one?
And a question I think is easier, how do you get collision to work?
>>
>>3146868
I'm sort of making a /trash/ related game in my free time, over in the /scaly/ general. It's a fairly basic CoC clone, but with support for user content, and it's still very early in development.

These questions are not specific at all, and answers to them depend on what code you have so far and the intended design of the game. I'll try anyway.

The first one is more of a design question than a programming one. What is a room? Is it like a chessboard (or tetris, or bomberman) with cells empty and filled in? Is it a continuous space? Is it top down or from side? Etc, etc, etc.

You refer to scrolling, so you probably want your room to be bigger than fits on screen. For that you have to implement some sort of viewport that you can slide around. And then you subtract its coordinates from everything you draw. And you skip drawing things that are out of its bounds.

Love2D uses Box2D for physics, but you should use that only if your game warrants it. If everything in your game can be abstracted with a box, then it's just simple bounds checks.
>>
>>3184836
yeah people do it all the time. I've actually stopped making stuff because every time I open the tools, I'm reminded that I'll just be bullied over whatever I produce, regardless of its quality.
>>
>>3200451

that's fucking dumb, level design is completely legit thing to do.
>>
>>3200567
Apparently not. And even when I was trying ot make standalone type stuff with new-ish gameplay mechanics, it'd be always shit on no matter what because it's "just le """level design""" haha did u lrn that @ devry lmbo".

OP of >>3155663 here

My problem is that I mostly have a want to make games due to the fact that character creation and stuff like that is literally one of my favorite aspects of any game ever. I can sit down for hours and just grind and balance out skills or come up with new ways to play. The difficulty is designing much of the rest of it, from levels and music to art design and programming. It's why I have trouble finishing even basic-ass RPG Maker trash, because most of the fun of game design is thoroughly sucked out by having to make dungeons and events and shit. Maybe someday but I doubt it will happen in the next 20 years.

It sounds like you just don't enjoy game dev, at least not for the genres you're trying to make stuff for. Why not make dress up doll games like you'd find on Newgrounds in the late 90s and early 00s?

the future are vr expreiences, PORN VR experiences, FURRY PORN WAIFUR SIMULATOR VR EXPERIENCE...

Is not about how much it cost, its about something human kind need to archive, like fly, go to the moon, conquer the space...

With the new AI revolution and the future cheap and evolved VR headsets we will have the opportunity to build our dream, just imagine you put your device and you are in a Digimon like world with lewd sexy difgital creatures to interact and conquer (with your penis or holes) and this creatures having a basic AI, now think all people doing mods and expanding it's content make this world bigger and bigger, is part of our nature as men and males we are destined to join soon or after our creative power to archive men most strongest desire
>>
>>3218318
literally why not
>>
>>3220456
nah i both used a big vr setup at an arcade when i was a kid, and got to try a modern headset, and i gotta say, vr is a dumb gimmick and i hope it dies quietly in the next year or two like motion controls did
>>
>>3220535
I think the technology will be amazing and cheap in only 5 years
>>
>>3220584
it's a dumb gimmick

no amount of visual fidelity will make it better than a screen and proper pointer device

the only good simulators are dedicated items with screens and real controls-- Flight Trainers, Silent Scope machines, etc.

go back to /r9k/, permavirgin
>>
>>3220809
you need to have more faith in technology, right now we have a lot of cool technologies coming
>>
>>3220921
VR is "cool" but not useful or good

the problem is lack of tactile feedback. taping a fleshlight to a fan motor while playing MGQ isn't quite the same thing as taking a fluffy sparkledog by the hips and railing it as it cheers you on in cantonese. same reason why a vr shooter will just never ever measure up to a good round of Time Crisis or Silent Scope, and VR spooky walking sim games have not managed to edge out "Real Life Maze Game" businesses just yet.

I used to be the same way. Game designing has always been my dream, and it took me until college to realize that I should try for it regardless. Even though it's just a hobby for me, I practice drawing, 3D art, and coding through codecademy now. If you have time to dream, you have time to get in gear.
