Ren's a Jiangshi, or "Chinese Hopping Vampire". In Chinese mythology, they're an undead who're summoned and controlled with a special seal placed over their forehead. The "Hopping" comes from their primary locomotion, due to stiff joints.

Yang I think is supposed to be Marisia from 2hu.

I think like ten thousand standardized Pennies would be a vastly more efficient fighting force than teams of four individuals with unique fighting styles and weapons.

Seriously can you imagine the logistics nightmare to provide Dust rounds to hunters who picked .63 or whatever as their gun's caliber because "lol it's my two favorite numbers!"
>>

>The kingdom of Mantle had diversity and self expression.

This is the only description of it because that's all the Remnant Dikes want in the history books.

Mantle is a now-defunct Kingdom in Remnant, located north of Vale. According to the RWBY: World of Remnant episode "Huntsmen", it was the birthplace of the Huntsman academy of Atlas, which soon grew to become Mantle's successor state sometime following the Great War.

One of these is incredibly unsustainable and illogical and the other isn't. Hint: The one that isn't is the one that the real world goes with.

It's no wonder Remnant is so fucked if they hero-idealize hard enough to throw out all common sense in favor of allowing every single fighter to be their own special snowflake.

Okay first point. You're trying to compare a standing armed force and the issues and standards that they have to be wary of and attend to, to what is more better described as several small mercenary groups which really can't even be called groups and are more akin to fantasy adventuring bands.

Also you keep focusing on the snowflake thing and keep trying to blow it into this whole big deal when most likely the cartridges and materials used by hunters are probably standardized in some way with I guess the SDC having a monopoly on the supplying of ammunition.

Because in the real world, which you want to bring up, we have certain kinds of caliber and cartridge designs because they work. And smart people or obsessed people are the ones that figured it out.

So realistically and making the assumption that not every single hunter in the world is an engineering genius who is sitting down at the age of somewhere between eighteen and thirteen maybe to make their shit, the weapons while highly modular probably have standardized calibers, materials and some parts to make it a little bit easier.

Most of the weapons are combinations of things after all. RWBY is actually fairly odd in regards to their weapons.

This is probably worded like shit.
>>

>There is no perfect way to fight

Yes there is. Or at least REALLY close. Even an imperfect method is preferable if it's ten times as streamlined and utilitarian as the alternative.

>Even if you make everyone fight the same, there's still going to be something for the villain to exploit in some form

At that point you're just saying it works like this because of plot contrivance, because there's zero way that anyone could reasonably think "Yeah even though our enemies are monsters our own people are obviously going to backstab us and work with them somehow".

Like, it might not matter that much if Hunters were some kind of super-elite special forces units that supplemented the general military, but no they're literally the one and only line of defense humanity has against the Grimm. Atlas is the only country that actually has their own standing military integrated that's with their own Hunters and they explicitly get tons of flack for it. Nobody else has an army and normally Hunters just pick and choose to go and do whatever they personally want.
>>
>>3117829
Hunters aren't an army. They are mercenaries. They handle that themselves. Learn the lore.
>>
>>3118109
Y'know what I found weird about that?

That despite the different kinds of dust being pre-loaded, in a set order, Blake was always in a perfect position, that each one she fired off in sequence served her current needs during that fight perfectly.

Just seems wildly unlikely. Or like she could somehow manipulate their position in the magazine.
>>
>>3118043
>to what is more better described as several small mercenary groups which really can't even be called groups and are more akin to fantasy adventuring bands.

It's not even bands. Teams can choose to stay together or split up, and nobody controls what they do, they're just offered missions that they can turn down if they want.

>Also you keep focusing on the snowflake thing and keep trying to blow it into this whole big deal when most likely the cartridges and materials used by hunters are probably standardized in some way with I guess the SDC having a monopoly on the supplying of ammunition.

But that's complete bullshit. We're told outright that every Hunter personally designs and constructs their weapons in like their early teens, and so far not a single one between any of the known characters is close to identical.

Like fuck, Qrow taught Ruby and they both use transforming scythes, but the scythes have completely different shapes, transform differently, have entirely different integrated guns, and Qrow's has a whole different extra form. This is a 1-1 mentor student relationship, but the end result is still so radically different that it's hard to imagine being able to use parts from one of them to fix the other in an emergency.

It's just nonsense.

>Like, it might not matter that much if Hunters were some kind of super-elite special forces units that supplemented the general military, but no they're literally the one and only line of defense humanity has against the Grimm.
That might have something to do with the fact that the population of Remnant is probably incredibly small in comparison to Earth's their need of military is probably much smaller considering they're holding supposedly geographically advantageous positions in a relative time of peace where there is no nations trying to invade or murder the other.

So why the hell would there every be a logistics nightmare?
>>
>>3118137
That's the point you retard.

Why is it these one off mavericks are the singular offensive and defensive measure against the Grimm?

Hell, every single living human that isn't handicapped or totally incapable should have mandated military service even without being Hunters.

>>3118171
But that makes no sense. Humans have been losing the fight against the Grimm for so long that they literally only have four large population centers on the entire planet left, why the fuck is ANYBODY content to sit behind their walls and put the entirety of their hopes for survival on just a few Hunters? Does nobody want to actually fight the Grimm and expand? Are they not worried about a concentrated effort wiping out literally one-fourth of their population in a single stroke?

That came VERY close to happening with Vale. The Hunters alone could do nothing to stop the tide of Grimm once it actually focused in, if it wasn't for deus ex silver eyes freezing the wyvern and thus attracting all the Grimm to it in Beacon, the city very well could have fallen overnight.
>>
>>3118267
>Does nobody want to actually fight the Grimm and expand?
Yeah pretty much.

They don't particularly have any reason to fight for expansion aside from what will eventually be population issues which don't really seem to be a problem.

They are after all barely removed a generation or two from a major war with consequences well beyond those of any we can imagine.

The fact that they're probably still trying to breed in relative safety is probably why they're not jonesing to form a military and start pushing back.
Because of the machinations of Salem.

If I had a cat and that cat killed any rat that tried to get into my house I could be called stupid for not making an attempt to get rid of them in the backyard but I don't have the money for that and that cat kills all that enter.

But what happened is that someone, a human came in and kicked the utter shit out of my cat and started throwing pregnant rats around my house.

The Grimm had to be assisted by intelligent design to get at Vale and for that to happen there had to be idiots bumfuck stupid enough to look at possible extinction and think it a good idea.

Faunus witch craft I guess.

>>3118125
The market is probably quite a nice business to be in with everyone looking to make the ultimate weapon for themselves an all the parts need to do so.
>>
>>3118207
Being fantasy doesn't justify it though. I'm willing to accept something like super-teens creating their own weapons, but the show has explicitly criticized the creation of a join Hunter/military force with Atlas. Everybody in-universe berates them for not just having their own standing military, but also combining it with their Hunter forces, despite that being the most sensible thing you could possibly do.

>>3118222
The thing is, in reality that's why the AK (And the M16 and all it's close relatives and descendants in the US) are so prolific. Much better guns can and have been made, but those models are so completely ubiquitous, that attempting to replace them and thus necessitate the obsoletion of all the training, parts, and ammo that's already ingrained into the military, just isn't worth the effort.

>>3118240
Okay, stick with me here.

>RWBY is out on a mission
>Yang's Ember Celica happens to break down/run out of ammo
>Nobody can help her repair it because not only does nobody else other than her know how it works, nobody carries any of it's necessary parts or ammo
>Yang can no longer use it while on that mission
>After returning home, she needs to send away for the custom mechanisms needed because none of the local dealers happen to have an abundance of "extendable shotgun gauntlets in sun-yellow"
>Yang has possibly caused the failure of a job and been rendered unable to fight for who knows how long simply because her weapon is unique to herself

Are you getting it? It would be absurd for an industry to try and accommodate all of these Hunter's very specific needs, especially in a timely manner when they should be out stopping the constant tide of death just outside the kingdom's borders.
>>
>>3118343
>Yeah pretty much.

But that's stupid. Like SO stupid that it stretches any semblance of believably even beyond the standards RWBY has already set for itself.

It's also explicitly false. We know for a fact that people DO want to beat the Grimm and expand, that's the entire deal with Mountain Glenn (Which I'm pretty sure was in the recent past and not before the war eighty fucking years ago) along with other small villages that constantly try to make it outside of the cities, but the only support they have are the whims of Hunters who may or may not choose to accept their requests.

>Because of the machinations of Salem.

Honestly, Salem didn't need to do much. Vale already had it's own extensive criminal element, and lots of (Supposed) racial tension.

What if some bad egg Faunus just happened to kill a Human during the tournament? Or the opposite? Salem's plans accelerated things, but all they were doing was stoking animosity that already existed.

Put it this way, your cat can kill all the mice it likes, but they're still gonna keep coming in as long as you leave rotted fucking food sitting everywhere. So you can either take out the trash, or get more cats, but doing neither is setting yourself up for some plague.
>>
>>3118391
>despite that being the most sensible thing you could possibly do.
That is not even remotely the most sensible thing to do considering the current political and sociological landscape of Remanent.

As somebody mentioned before the population of Remanent is probably greatly smaller than Earth's own and the nations of the world number only four and have absolutely no reason or purpose for going to war with each other.

A standing army is pointless considering the fact that the grimm are handicapped by the geological positioning of the nations.

Atlas is probably getting a lot of shit because they trying to have something that would in normal situations do nothing more than stand around and act as Atlas throwing it's weight around.

As for the situation you described with Yang, that is literally what would happen in the field with a universally assigned weapon, with the possible exception of the ammo bit which itself carries it's own issues.

A fireteam all carrying and being familiar with the same weapons does not automatically translate to the ability to be able to fix it in the field. If damage occurs to a weapon to such a degree that jury rigging fixes are not possible without spare parts, the parts you need and the fix necessary are most likely not going to be able to be done in the field. That advantages of a standard weapons translates off that battlefield where the bureaucratic and logistical system is able to simply send the soldier another rifle when he is safely not being shot at.
You keep trying to compare their situation that of a standing military while not understanding that the method of operation the military abides by did not create the military. It was created because of the military.

Not the anon you replayed to but you've made some good points.

But I'd also argue that a lot of groups in Remnant do have standard issue an universal weapons as we've seen after all Junior Xiong's henchmen and the White Fang do this a lot an the Vale guards armor looks pretty similar to Atlas soldiers aside from color scheme, so standard issue weapons 'n gear isn't really rare among the common people it's just not something a hunter/huntress would do.
>>
>>3118459
>But that's stupid. Like SO stupid that it stretches any semblance of believably even beyond the standards RWBY has already set for itself.
Except it really doesn't.

You're describing how hellish the situation outside the safe and secure nations are while in the same breathe, expressing your disbelief that these people are not forming massive armies to push back against the neverending, always respawning creatures that are explicitly drawn to negative emotions, which is largely what you find in armies going to war against such odds.

It hasn't been shown well in the story but we are told that the world of Remanent is one where humanity is small and battered.

You're criticizing the nations for basically trying to be able to walk before they are capable of running.

>As for the situation you described with Yang, that is literally what would happen in the field with a universally assigned weapon,

No, in the field with everybody carrying the same weapon, you have redundancy. It's likely everyone has spare parts and ammo, everyone understands how to use their comrade's weapons if they need to, everyone understand's each other's capabilities completely and what they can and cannot to, and yes, a broken gun becomes a very simple situation to solve by higher-ups after the fight is over.

You don't need to look at modern militaries for this. Throughout all of history, the army that has standardized equipment and training has been superior to a force that just allows it's soldiers to use their own personal weaponry.
>>
>>3118156
>and so far not a single one between any of the known characters is close to identical.

That's not how modular weaponry works.

I really don't think so. Everything CMEN did could have happened naturally with the exception of broadcasting that message and reprogramming the robots. It's simply a matter of chance for certain things like spiked WF activity and casualties in the tournament to have lined up. Even if the chances are low, the stakes are so high and the repercussions so bad that putting every single contingency on Hunters alone is irresponsible.

>>3118643
But that's just the thing, these groups are relatively standardized so even if the Hunters aren't (They seem really big on the individuality side of things) then why does each country not have their own supplementary military? As it is everything seems privatized, Beacon for example isn't connected to Vale's government.

Which again seems like a bad idea, because you'd think that the people who trained in a specific area would be the most qualified to protect that area.
>>
>>3118980
>Yes I recognize the reason for this. No that doesn't make up for the fact that graduated Hunters seem to be fucking worthless.
So the entirity of your argument about the uslessness of hunters is going forward even though you know that the reason for that was the fact that the company that made RWBY didin't have the resources for a proper battle.
>>
>>3118928
>So retards with a false sense of security, you mean.
Like Atlas and their standing army of robots and aura user equal mechs.
>>
>>3118902
>>3118911
But we're outright told that no kingdom other than Atlas really has a military.

What the fuck good would a Vale militia be if it has no training regimen, no industry, and it isn't prepared to defend the city even with advanced warning?

That's some America pre-War of 1812 shit which leads to things like Canada burning down the White House without anybody doing something to stop them.

>>3118893
>having some sort of backup to only relying on international Hunters for national protection is idiotic

Seriously I just don't get it. There is no downside for the kingdoms to have their own militaries in addition to the Hunters, and not doing it seems almost suicidal.
>>
>>3118980.
>Hey guys even with the Atlas army here ?"
A good portion of whom were on the enemies side.

You're using as an example an occasion where the army actually made things worse.

You also have to remember, Atlas has a further advantage in that they have Neon Katt. Her strong meme power keeps Atlas citizens happier, so Atlas attracts less attention from Grimm.

Honestly, Atlas seem to be the only players in the game who know what they're doing, Salem aside.

In the short term about as much good as the Atlas military did.

>What the fuck good would a Vale militia be if it has no training regimen, no industry, and it isn't prepared to defend the city even with advanced warning?
At no point it is explicitly stated that that is the case.

And you keep saying that actual military would have made a difference when the actual occupational force that Atlas brought in was next to useless and actually made things worse.

A lot of your arguments hinge around the fact that you're downplaying Cinder's actions in the role of the story and you keep trying to paint hunters as a military instead of what they actually are, an adventurers guild.
>>
>>3119029
>There is no downside for the kingdoms to have their own militaries in addition to the Hunters.
This is a universe where monsters converge on negative emotion and bloodshed.

It's the same issue that arises with the idea of expanding. In that combat, in the scale of a military, would just create and endless cycle of attacking Grimm.
>>
>>3118927
Then why is part of Hunter training going off to help protect these places?

>>3118947
There are countless circumstances where something practically identical to what Cinder did happens completely by chance and the result of the Grimm invading is the same.

Someone would have to be living off in their own head to think that nothing bad could ever happen to cause enough negativity to draw the Grimm to invade.

>>3118949
Yes, and the Hunters are basically an international military peacekeeping force they don't have any of the ties or infrastructure that a military does, but that is the role they fulfill. Badly.

>>3119011
The Atlas military was pretty good before getting hacked. Breach for example could have been a lot worse if they hadn't helped contain the Grimm as well.

Christ if the big mechs are as good normally as when they were hacked, each one is worth several Hunters by itself.
>>
>>3119126
The Atlas military were practically fucking steamrolled by the Grimm and aura using characters
>>3119154
>There are countless circumstances where something practically identical to what Cinder did happens completely by chance and the result of the Grimm invading is the same.
No there aren't.

You do realize the stack of dominoes Cinder had to put in place to cause the fall right?
>>
>>3119154
>Christ if the big mechs are as good normally as when they were hacked, each one is worth several Hunters by itself.
Well... Hunter students.

Sorry to muddy the waters further, but we mainly see the trainee hunters fighting. The adult hunters seem to be stronger still, in most cases.
>>
>>3119154
>Christ if the big mechs are as good normally as when they were hacked, each one is worth several Hunters by itself.
Hunters in training.

Who had among them members who were capable of downing them on their own.
>>
>>3119001
Well they did have a battle, with the students, but despite knowing it was because of animation that doesn't make up for it in-universe.

On the whole the Hunters being spread out across all the kingdoms leaves each one weak individually, especially to a concentrated attack like we saw.

>>3119050
No, before that. After Yang broke Mercury's leg, we see that the Grimm start streaming towards the city, and even with Atlas helping there just aren't enough Hunters to do anything about it, or at least not enough active since officials were begging on the news for more help.

> You do realize the stack of dominoes Cinder had to put in place to cause the fall right?
Indeed. Cinder is a genius and her plan was a masterstroke. Very cleverly hit Vale as hard as possible.
>>
>>3119185
>concentrated attack
Concentrated attack?

You're downplaying the degree of that assult by magnitudes.
>>
>>3119185
So you're arguing that an actual military would have made a difference when an actual military being in play barely made a difference.
>>
>>3119095
Weiss stop watching texan anime and get back to escaping Atlas.
>>
>>3119188
Obviously bait but this is so important.

This was not the actions of a terrorist group or some disgruntled lunatics. It was the actions of a demon woman living in hell playing for the powers of some semi-demigods.

Army or no army it would not have made a difference. Actually if the play had been centered on Atlas the devastation probably would have been worse.
>>
>>3119154
And the Hunters were pretty good before Cinder did her thing.
>>
>>3119242
Not bait. Cinder really is extremely cunning and good at executing a plan, and her leadership skills make the villains magnitudes more dangerous.

She knew just how to manipulate events to suit her objectives. And she didn't just hit Vale with every force she had at her disposal, she demoralised and confused them before that and then made sure to cripple their academy for good measure.
>>
>>3119250
> Atlas sent like three ships with Ironwood
IIRC there's actually a few more, at one point. You see more than three either out of Ozpin's tower or just as the attack starts.

But yeah, once Roman makes his return there are seemingly only three ships up there. Animation oversight, I guess.
>>
>>3119250
>Yes a military would have made a difference. Especially if it wasn't one that could just be fucking hacked.
Except it really fucking wouldn't because you keep ignoring the fact that everything that went wrong was almost entirely orchestrated by Cinder and Co.

At best we would have seen their uniforms before they got mauled.
>>
>>3119174
Yes there are. Cinder herself says that the whole thing was fucking easy.

I already outlined a very simple situation earlier that could lead to the Grimm attacking, the only way it wouldn't be possible is if everyone lived in a utopia.

>>3119175
>>3119182
Sure. But I mean, if a couple are equal to a dozen or so Hunter students, they can't be drastically weaker than a single full Hunter, not to the degree that they're not worth producing.

Like Qrow could probably destroy one no problem, but one could also probably kill a hundred minor Grimm itself since they're not that strong. What I'm saying here is that a supplementary force is good.

>>3119249
What did she do to make the Hunters less good?
>>
>>3119185
>>>3119001
>Well they did have a battle, with the students, but despite knowing it was because of animation that doesn't make up for it in-universe.
So in another universe where the Vale military consists of ten guys you'd be arguing how useless they were despite the fact that the animation is to blame.
>>
>>3119295
>they can't be drastically weaker than a single full Hunter, no
You have seen the gap in skill between the second and first years right?
>>
>>3119295
>Cinder herself says
Cinder is backed by Salem.
>>
>>3119195
I really don't think so. It was relatively large-scale, but the trainees managed to hold Beacon themselves for quite a while.

I mean, in terms of numbers how many Grimm do you think attacked?

>>3119202
The military that was there there hacked and turned against the other defenders. Do you not think that an entire Vale military would have been completely ineffectual at defending the city and it's people?
>>
>>3119310
I don't know about that, anon. The Vytal tournament had no regard for school year but Yang still got to the finals.
>>
>>3119325
What if all Salem does is standing around looking ominous and making scary speeches, and allying with her achieves nothing?

Cinder might be working with her out of pity.
>>
>>3119310
>>3119330
The tournament seemed pretty fucking dumb in that respect. You'd assume that the first years wouldn't get very far at all against the 2nd, 3rd and 4ths.
>>
>>3119345
I put it up to Yang being exceptionally powerful, myself. Same for Pyrrha.

I don't know what school year Sun is in, but him making it to the finals might be a little less believable of he's just a first year.
>>
>>3119329
>The military that was there there hacked and turned against the other defenders. Do you not think that an entire Vale military would have been completely ineffectual at defending the city and it's people?
Considering the time it takes to actually raise an army and the fact that Cinder would have been well aware of them yeah probably.

I mean why use the Battle of Beacon as an example if how ineffectual hunters are?

Nobody looked good during that. Ironwood's phone and forces were hacked, his ship was high jacked and shot others out of the sky and the Grimm and Neo slaughtered them like jobbers.
>>
>>3119365
Sun originally wasn't meant to be in the finals anyway.
>>
>>3119295
>What I'm saying here is that a supplementary force is good.
Which got hacked and whose human side got slaughtered.
>>
>>3119286
Ships as in the big ones, of which there were like three or four, max.

Unless that was Atlas' ENTIRE military, an equivalent Vale force that wasn't just removed from the equation might have just stopped the invasion cold.

>>3119290
Except you're ignoring that Ozpin KNEW the Grimm had a directing intelligence on their side and SPECIFICALLY that she had agents somewhere in his own halls.

But, he doesn't have ANY fucking plan to try and counteract any of this. He was opposed to any military presence solely on the grounds that it could make people nervous. It's like his one and only idea was to try and keep people happy and ignorant of the danger so they didn't get riled up and attract Grimm, which is relatively sound in a world where the Grimm are just dumb animals and can't coordinate, but he KNOWS that he doesn't live in that world, so the fact that he did nothing else is the utmost in retardation.
>>
>>3119382
No, but he would have lost to Pyrrha and Nora (first years) so the point is moot.
>>
>>3119374
>Vale has a standing force ready
>Cinder just sends Mercury and Adam

You can't stop this hotness cold.

Not even Ozpin and Pyrrha could stall the Fall! It took sheer deus ex machina superpowers to do what two of Vale's best couldn't,
>>
>>3119310
As people have said, it doesn't seem that big. There were three first year students in the finals, and not a single upperclassmen that we know of. I would say Mercury is representative of a higher year of student, maybe a graduate.

The point is, even if they're not equal to Hunters, that doesn't mean they're not worth having.

>>3119386
I don't get what you're saying, how does that have any bearing on some theoretical Vale military?

>>3119325
Even if Salem made the entire plan, Cinder still executed it and to her it was easy. It really seemed as though shit just kept lining up that made everything even simpler to screw up than it already was.

>>3119300
If those ten guys showed up and got slaughtered they still would have been worth it and better than absolutely nothing.
>>
>>3119419
Considering how much stronger Cinder's crew is than the main cast and the performance of the mechs against trainee hunters, squishy humans would have been slaughtered.

Like it would be good for some laughs then it would just get sad.
>>
>>3119374
What I'm saying is the army should have already existed. They shouldn't have needed to raise some militia in a few days, it should have been around as a standing force.

The stakes a so high here, I can literally not comprehend any reason why Vale would not have it's own military prepared just in case something were to happen.
>>
>>3119487
Because they are at the feet of a hunter school.

The thing you don't seem to understand is that Cinder basically S Ranked everything. What she did was not something any Mook off could have done. It was not even something the White Fang could have managed on it's own.

The idea of Cinder's plot was inconceivable and she managed to run laps around Atlas while she was at it as well, making their prize robot and new army the catalyst of the crisis.
