Most of the time I imagine that Nick realized his love first, but Judy was the first to say it out loud and let Nick know. She seems like the one to make the first move while Nick would be too hesitant to ruin the one good thing that's happened to him in so long. He has more to lose and is a pessimist while Judy's optimism would give her the courage to confess.

Speaking of role swap, I'm really dissapointed how that fic with Nick and Judy in opposite positions is going.
I was intrigued by how the author made their personalities different based on how the world sees them (like Nick retains his idealism in becoming a cop but is kind of a wuss and a pushover due to prejudice, Judy is kind of a badass merc) but God help him, the author cannot get off the rails of the original story. Its followed the movie beat for beat even if the specific events are different. Even WHEN the events are different, they somehow manage to loop around into the next story beat the movie had.
Like in the most recent update there was no real reason for Judy to tell Nick her back story other than the fact he was like "hey tell me about you" after they tied up Manchas.

I've felt like I was missing more when I write dialogue too but I learned to kinda stop caring. I have so much to write and I always write when I'm tired and I just can't find the energy.
I break into the character's thoughts for a decent chunk of a paragraph and try to use some creative language with it so the audience can get in the headspace too and be entertained.
It probably clashes around the dialogue. I mean, the characters can say a lot or a little, but you did what I like to think is best. Just throw in facial features, body language and movements, and specify the tones of voice. I think if you can do those the dialogue will be a lot more meaningful, and you did it really well. Bell staring at her food instead of making eye contact, Shep speaking softly.
I'm glad somebody else writes about how a character's gaze shifts around as much as I do. Eyes and eyebrows are so expressive and easy to write about. I need to try using mouths and noses more often for expressions.

There's one that's updating really slowly but I've enjoyed so far, where Nick ended up becoming a cop on his own, but prejudice against foxes is alive and strong and he keeps getting assigned to the really shitty parts of town which has made him really jaded and shit, and he constantly and intentionally gets on Bogo's nerves because they piss each other off. Then Judy becomes a cop and instead of her being assigned to parking duty because there's "no slots open with anyone else", he steps up and volunteers, because no one else wants to be the fox's partner. She accepts, even though she's definitely afraid of foxes because getting a real assignment is more important.

I think having relationships that don't work out are narratively pointless if one of the characters in the relationship disappears from the story after they break up. Unless its to say something about the other character having like commitment issues or something, but thats rarely the case
