Thanks, man! The best thing I'd tell you to do is get in touch with your local police departments. Every department will offer different programs and services you can take advantage of. A lot of the ones near me offer ride-alongs to civilians and are especially receptive towards people looking to get a better understanding of the job. A couple even offer junior officers' programs that are sort of like internships with the department and give you a glimpse into what the dynamic of the lifestyle is like.
The ride-alongs are the best though. If you can, try to go for one later in the afternoon/evening/night. It'll be a little slower than during the day, but the calls are usually more interesting. Most stuff during the day seems to be traffic incidents and the like.

It's definitely not a job for everyone, but anyone with the right reasons and drive can do a lot of good. I live in a suburban area outside three smaller-sized cities. It's pretty nice, since there isn't a TON of crime or problems you'd see in a major urban area, but it isn't some carrot-choked podunk in the middle of nowhere with only three cops and nothing going on. It's like a happy median. You get different sets of issues. Depending on what you're looking for, you might like a city setting better than a suburban or rural area.
