HSG was Homestuck General before people started abbreviating generals like board names, with the forward slashes. It got so cancerous and self-reinforcing that it got banned, except one or two threads when a new update happened. It bounced around on other websites where it picked up the name /hsg/ while other generals were doing the same thing, and that's basically it.
