They wanted to combine the "love lost" theme of kain with the genocide theme of ricard and cyan. Which made freyas story a little ridiculous. But yeah, as much as I love this game, it has always pissed me off that Freya's entire race was used as nothing but a disposable narrative tool, to the point where Freya herself basically has little else to do but interact with Amarant after Disc 2, which only makes it all the more bizarre that the ending has her suddenly back with Fratley.
Hell, they so didn't care about the Burmecians that they forgot basic biology when writing one pair of them. The couple you save in Burmecia, stated to be expecting a child, are met again in Lindblum, and even though only a few weeks have passed, they suddenly have six kids old enough to run around and speak in full sentences. So either those are kids they already had who escaped before them, or Square wanted us to buy that this woman popped out six kids that grew at the same rate as Robin Williams in the movie Jack.
