For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

Are these things using the old 1990 molds? Cause to get 3 of them for $12 that seems ridiculous if they were using the modern HG mold.
Plus the seamlines on the feet and the lack of articulation in the promo images seems to suggest such.

Got my first kit yesterday. It didn't seem like master grade is as intimating as I thought, was able to get both arms yesterday, however I don't know if this is a rookie mistake or a design flaw. Certain motions on the arms make the shoulder and bicep disconnect. I wonder if someone can give me some info on this.

Bandai's quite experimental with their model kits.

I remember one of their 90s' BBsenshi kits had two runners whose parts match up with each other. You just have to press the runners together back-to-back and most of the components are assembled. Big seams and messy nubs though.

I need a spray booth. Folding would be nice.

Looking around, a lot of different people appear to be selling more or less the same thing. This thing. I'm guessing there's a single factory in China spitting them out.

Anyone have it? Any good?
>>
>>5781801
It's okay, not particularly powerful as its exhaust is a single 150cfm server fan. If you can give up the folding part you can make your own booth using corrugated plastic sheets, duct tape, a 12V power supply, and some server fans for about the same price, assuming that thing's still going for $100. Keep in mind though, corrugated plastic isn't as rigid.

You can use it for solvent based paints since the server fan, like most PC fans, uses a DC brushless motor so it won't spark. But I'd still take it easy with the pressure and spraying because like I said, it doesn't have the strongest exhaust. I knew of people on hobbyfanatic that used these things for lacquers and such no problem but personally I wouldn't use it for more than 3 or so years since solvent vapors can affect the wiring on the fans. Even then you're unlikely to achieve the concentration of solvent needed to combust even with its weak suction because the vapor would spread into the air first.

Basically, it's okay and unless you're super paranoid it's a good entry level booth. Just wear a mask and try to keep the pressure on the low side (~20psi). And no spray cans obviously. I wouldn't use spray cans on a much stronger booth anyway.

I used it for a while but it was mostly just acrylics, including Tamiya's synthetic acrylic with their thinner which is supposedly a weak solvent. It was fine.
>>
>>5781823
>mostly just acrylics, including Tamiya's synthetic acrylic with their thinner which is supposedly a weak solvent

That's basically what the plan is, so it sounds adequate overall. And yeah, spray cans get to frolic outdoors, not in the spray booth.

Brushless motors are used in industrial environments because they're less likely to spark. Those ones are usually sealed too but the point stands.

Yeah seriously. A bathroom exhaust fan is like $15 at Lowes and really easy to set up.
>>

>>5782375
This. Literally have run a bathroom exhaust fan from home depot core spray booth with my outer window accidentally closed with the room's door closed for 2 hours (I had a full face respirator on), turning my hobby room into a lacquer fume filled gas chamber and the thing never caught fire.
Also consistently spray lacquer/enamel for 1-2 hours without any problems. If anything were to happen, worst case would be a quick and small fireball or a few sparks. Both would not need a fire extinguisher. Which you should have in your house anyways.

Yes, and if we were talking about spray painting an actual car in a closed garage that would apply.

But we're not, and the concentrations we can create with out hobby-tier setups are degrees of magnitude less than what it needed for combustion even if you accidentally spill your paint and/or thinner.

Ergo, a meme.

Painting innards is fun if there is an option to reveal them like that. Otherwise I don't bother.

where the decals samuel ones or bandai ones? i found set/sol didn't work too great on samuel's, usually required a bit more but bandais official ones are like butter with set/sol on their star wars kits
>>
>>5782721
Thanks, dude.

Yeah, that was my process of thinking too. I couldn't bother to do the entire frame, but some things that could possibly shown at the right angle or with a gimmick, I feel I need to.

And I noticed something similar. It didn't look quite right until the matte was applied, but I think I know the difference between what will look bad and what will look good pre-matte coating.

>>5782730
Samuel ones. I've never tried official Bandai ones before, but that's good to know that I'm just not horrible period. The lack of an included brush with the Micro stuff though really hurts and gets annoying after a while.

Yeah, not a big fan of the screws. Not sure if it's the hole or the tool from the basic kit, but it took a bit of elbow grease to get it in. One I intentionally left out because the right arm kept falling out more often. I do want to look into mods and some basic nub removal. It looks nice though

yeah samuel ones always left a bit of a border no matter what, think it's just because of the paper. ended up using just sol to set and dissolve as i found that worked a bit better. using them on bandai there's literally no borders at all. pic related is samuel's. yes the silver were a pain.

>tfw haven't built anything in over a year and thinking about waterslides makes me want to build
>>
>>5782761
That's on bare plastic, right? For my ground Gundams, I did the same where I just let the sol just dissolve over the decal, but it fucked up the surrounding paintjob. I thought I may have just not have gloss coated properly at first, but then Mr. Mark Setter/Softer didn't have the same issue so there's something pretty different between the two brands. Micro also smells like vinegar while Mr. Mark does not for some reason.

And do it, man. It's always a cathartic experience after a while. I've only completed 3 kits this whole year and each time felt pretty good when I just took my time.

how do you remove excess from panel lines on painted parts? Alcohol seems not working

I'm sorry about the noob question but where do you guys buy your paints?

Out of the 3 I looked at on Amazon (Model Masters, Citadel, Vallejo) it seemed like Vallejo had the most selection but most of the sets on the Canadian site were out of stock. I'm not picky about branding but I'm just starting out and I want a lot of model paints.
>>
>>5784459
Model Masters is shit for handpainting from experience, avoid unless you're airbrushing.

Citadel is alright, but kinda expensive. You'll be able to buy it from GW directly from their site which shouldn't be a hassle.

Vallejo does have a good selection, but I can't tell you how good it is since I've never touched it before. See if you have a local hobby shop near you. and see what they have. Based on these threads I've heard that Vallejo and Tamiya are best for painting.
>>
>>5784469
>Model Masters is shit for handpainting from experience, avoid unless you're airbrushing.
MM is shit for airbrushing. It gums up airbrushes unless you use a homemade thinner with aggressive amounts of flow aid and retarder.
>>
>>5784469
Vallejo is hands down the best for hand painting. I'll put Citadel as a close second, despite the price. For airbrushing, Tamiya is good, but use Mr Leveling Thinner. Mr Color is slightly better than Tamiya, but my preference is completely on Gaia for airbrushing. All three thin nicely with Leveling Thinner.

Go to your local hobby store and pick out some paints there, cause Amazon.ca charges you out the ass on paint (or so it did when I last looked). I've seen Citadel + Vallejo in the few stores I've been in, and one of them had Tamiya as well. They run from 3.95-4.95 a bottle.

From looking at the picture, you could try cutting off the peg on part 61, drill a hole, then use a portion of polycap runner to connect both pieces. You might have to use putty to partially fill in the hole on the other part in case the polycap runner is too small. Btw, what kit are you building?

the problem with glass is that it breaks so you're going to pay for packing it safely, but it will still be around $5 for 10bottles: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/100PCS-LOT-15ML-Glass-Bottle-Empty-Liquid-Container-Clear-Glass-Wishing-Botttle-With-Aluminum-Screw-Cap/32282664653.html

Do any of you have the new Ground Gundam in hand yet? I was all for it at first--new engineering, cool design, and I loved the red visor over the eyes. But it looks weirdly cheap to me in all the photoreviews. Maybe it's the particular shade of white...it reminds me of the cheap-ass no grade kits I grew up on with really thin flimsy plastic. I also feel like the ankle range looks pretty shit, and the eye visor is barely visible.

Basically, is this thing better in hand? Or am I pretty much correct?

Holy shit, when is Bandai going to improve their articulation for HGUC? It's 2016, ankle swivels should be standard.
>>
>>5786773
I agree that thing looks cheap as shit and it's 2000 yen for seemingly no reason.
>>
>>5786793
To be fair, most of their recent HGs have been very well articulated. This is sort of an outlier.

Pre-move backlog
I just want to move so I can build
>>
So, how many people are submitting Powered GMs for the group build?
>>
>>5786971
I needed a bulky torso and with the requirements there's not many kits to choose from that fit the bill unless I axe another part of the kitbash. I seriously hope this build isn't going to be 80% cardigans

Looks like the cover unit (that orange one) is some hybrid that all 3 of them build together.

I'm between apartments too now, staying at home until i find a new place. I've got 3 frame arm girls I'm dying to build, but I really dont want to around my parents.

Gunpla are cool by them, skimpy underage girls less so. The anticipation is killing me.

I might just paint the armor and guns and wait to do the body's till I move out.

>expecting that much out of try
nah it's probably just blue-hair's new gendum
>>
>>5787055
Oh yeah, does any one know where I can find the night vision visor on the 3rd girl? Or is it a custom job?
>>
>>5787058
Not Zeta enough for Blue Hair. Too much Blue Sparkly to be Blue Hair too.

I'm lovin the orange though.

>>5787063
>i-i built my new gendum to be more like sekai-kun-sama

>>

I could kinda see that, but I dunno. We'll have to wait and see.
>>
>>5787071

Scramble Gundam. A'ight. I concede.

What the fuck ever. If it gets us out of Try, so be it.
Seeing the Sekaibowl still exist is fucking gay though.

>again
>>
>>5787086
I know right? I was hoping for at least some Wing Gundam levels of stuff happening with the arms but this is just lazy and boring. Like, C'mon. Zeta is the only one that has a really interesting transformation, and it was one of the (if not the) first transforming suits.

It's custom. Gourai's head has the basic shape by default though. You just need to make the "lenses" with a bit of styrene tube or probably even a bit of sprue.

>gourai's emotionless murdermachine eyes on happy face materia
>cute genki materia eyes on big breasted stiletto

Now I get what's bugging me so much
Also the stiletto is really cute

He already has a new backpack unit for the Lightning being shown off and the ZII turned out to be Minato's new gunpla.

Also, Tekkadan has a new grunt MS of their own.
>>
>Barbatos's new weapon is a giant Tetsubo

I am suddenly very interested in this upgrade.
>>
>>5787123
Oooh yeah the screening for new IBO was today isn't it?
The angular grunt, new barbatos and the not!stargazer? Pretty hype.
