or those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

>>
>>5732315
At most.
>>
>Tfw GM group build gets me hype since GMs are my favorite, but I recently moved and the new place has no space for airbrushing

This must be what suffering feels like
>>
>>5732199
So if I were to add on some random bits like builder parts pieces, maybe some missile pods or the like, how much would I be allowed to put?

Would it count to the 50%, like would I have to choose between replacing more limbs on my GM and putting another two missile pods?

I don't plan on making an overly cluttered mess, but I have been planning a kitbash for a sort of full armor GM, and I'm just wondering how far I can take it with the extra weapons and whatnot.
>>
>>5732357
I'm not Gelgoog Guy but the rules pretty explicitly states that Add-Ons are NOT counted to the 50%

the 50% part refers to the mobile suit itself, so you can't have something with a gundam head, gm chest, hygogg arms and zaku legs because that'd be < 33% GM

I'd be willing to hazard a guess and say that as long as it resembles a GM it'd count
>>
>>5732199
Why only HGs?
>>
>>5732420
HGs are cheaper, easier to mod and there are more GM designs available. Unless you are going all out using an MG would be fucking stupid

Group build hype.

could be worse, I've never understood the complete frustration with slight nubs showing(maybe this model is more than slight but still). even with a few marks here and there, still better than the quality of most action figures you can buy on the market today.

As a model it's okay. All that shit on the back makes it kinda back heavy and the shoulders are a touch too loose on mine at least. Good nub placement, no horrible seamlines, etc. Only missing paint detail is the hip skirts should have black on them and the long, thin stickers that halve to fold over several corners probably won't hold up for very long.

It's more that it just looks like the builder didn't even care. Nobody's calling for a fully painted build, but a quick pass with a hobby knife is not that hard. Or hell, some glue on the parts that seem to always pop off since you know this is a display kit so it's going to get transported a lot.

And even then it wouldn't matter that much if anyone could pose half a damn, but welp.

apoxie sculpt is fantastic stuff

the reason it comes in large sizes is that is used for more than just touch ups to things, so you may need quite a bit if you are making something large for example. People use it for pottery and all kinds of things, but all that really matters for us is that it dries to a nicely sandable surface without shrinking and even the 2 regular sized tubs last a long time.

I think everything really does even out after taking account of shipping and whatnot. Japanese sites give you much better prices and deals on the models themselves but shipping is outrageously expensive while local sites have inflated prices but cheeper shipping.

That said, given your image it's weird to me that SAL costs more than EMS.

SAL is only cheap for very small and light items (like under 1kg)

HLJ orders individual runners if you email them. No idea what the pricing is like, an old HGUC might be better off just ordering another one.

Once SAL gets too big for small packet and kicks over to SAL parcel, there's pretty much no reason to use it over EMS. I dont think HLJ separates the 2 in their estimates.

It's an okay kit, building it just made me feel like it's a smaller, watered down version of the MG 1.0. The decision to only give the shield a handle and no hard point to attach to the arm confuses me as well. The did a way better job with the HGCE Strike

Thought people might be interested in this.
Just did some quick calculations with splitting up the order. Took all kits individually and grouped by grade and calculated shipping as a percentage of model cost.
Numbers listed are:
Model cost - shipping cost - shipping as a % of model cost
>Total 12349 7300 59.11
>HGs 5184 2290 44.17
>MGs 7165 5380 75.09
>V2 2475 1590 64.24
>HiNu 4690 2290 48.83
HGs individually
>1275 1190 93.33
>1104 1190 107.79
>1700 1290 75.88
>1105 1190 107.40

Shipping value used was RSAL.
MGs are all Ver.Ka.

So yes it turns out that separating the HGs from the MGs reduces the cost, but interestingly the MGs (unlike the HGs) are actually cheaper to ship individually rather than group them together (which makes no sense to me). Working out the cheapest way of getting all of them (HGs plus each MG separate) works out at only 19yen cheaper, the problem seems to be the high cost of shipping the V2. There are a few more calculation I want to do using the other Ver.Kas, but that'll be in another post.

I've decided to just get the HGs for now since I've got plenty to do and am not going to benefit from putting it all in one order. Thanks for everyone's help though.

>>
>>5735409

like it's not quite as strong as either lacquer or epoxy putty, so it's best for things like smoothing something out or filling in a gap, not something like remaking an edge that might rub or filling in lines to rescribe
>>
>>5735417
Got it, thanks.
>>
>>5735393
Did a butt load more calculations based on all the available Ver.Kas. Shipping is always the cheapest unless RSAL was available over SAL.

Clearly they use black magic to work out shipping; but interestingly, as also seen in the last post, despite the fact that there is huge variation in the way shipping is calculated it seems that if you are going to buy all the models anyway, finding the optimum baskets to minimise shipping seems to only save you a few yen on balance. So unfortunately it seems the only thing to take away from this is that if you are on a budget and there is a large selection of kits you want, it is possible to maximize you purchasing power, but if you are dead set on certain models and are trying to pinch the pennies, you're not going to save much and this doesn't take into account getting stung by customs.

I've already got the HiNu, but the only thing I could save over buying all remaining 3 together is 520 yen. If I got stung by customs admin fees on 2 deliveries, my saving would have been wiped out by many orders of magnitude.

I wouldn't trust them, most of the times they don't know what they are doing. Better be safe and buy protection for stronger stuff.
Also it is easier to find protections against pesticide than against paint.
>>
>>5736818
This. Some hobby shops tell you acrylic is nontoxic so you won't need a respirator
Also they were airbrushing in the hobby shop into one of those portable spray booths and I could still smell lacquer.
>>
>>5737048
Why are normals so universally dumb?
>>
>>5737048

I don't know where you live, but I'm pretty sure that shit is illegal in the UK. Acrylic is non-toxic in the sense it isn't a toxin, the problem is it clogs your alveoli leading to various lung disorders. Most acrylics you could drink and aside from the obvious nastiness of having paint inside you, you'd live but breathing in particulates is another thing entirely.

I paint pretty much exclusively with lacquers and used one of those portable spray booths, they work fine but you need to be sat right on top of them. Also the vent hoses they come with react with the paint, I started smelling paint coming through my respirator and didn't realise I was sat in a cloud of paint fumes until my girlfriend pointed it out. Turns out the vent hose had split. I immediately threw the thing out and picked up a £300 bench vent.
>>
>>5737110
Another issue is that "Acrylic" doesn't necessarily mean "thinned with water", especially spraycan and airbrushed ones. Even if its alcohol and not lacquer those fumes are still pretty bad.
>>
>>5737110
If you were smelling the fumes through your respirator either you aren't using a strong enough one, you need to tighten the straps, or it's time to change the filters, even if you were sitting in a fume cloud.
>>
>>5737110

You could've just replaced the hose with a stiff aluminum dryer hose. If the portable one is what I'm thinking of it'd fit just fine
>>

>>
>>5737150

Yeah the straps needed tightening, it was leaving a gap between my nose and cheeks.

>>5737154
I could have, but to be honest the thing always bothered me even before the vent hose degraded. I'd have to paint slowly when using wide spray patterns for example when priming or topcoating because it generated more particulate than the extractor could handle. I mean don't get me wrong the machine is great for acrylics or people who want to paint smaller scale, but when you have 300 parts to go through in a priming run with lacquers I just feel like it's not up to scratch, which is fine when you consider it's cheap price and portability.

>>5737160

You could build a better one for the same cost using corrugated polystyrene, duct tape, two server fans (the portable one only has one fan), and a 12V power supply.
>>
>>5737160

-Prime
-Lacquer black/grey/whatever colour the eyeball is.
-Enamel of whatever colour you want the cross to be, try to stay as within the camera cross area as much as possible.
- Tidy up with lighter fluid on a q-tip.

Alternatively just hand paint it in.
>>
>>5737172
Alright. I don't have any enamel paints. I'll have to jet down to Micheals and pick up a jar or two.
>>
>>5737180

>>
>>5737223

Tamiya acrylics have fumes and hand paint really badly unless you thin them with their own brand thinner which is expensive. They're pretty nice for airbrushing however. If you're set on hand painting acrylics I'd suggest vallejo, citadel or MIG paints.
