The Disney Store has a sale on the Classic Dolls, $9 each for today only. They are more than likely trying to clear them out to make way for this year's batch of Classic dolls.

http://www.disneystore.com/classic-dolls-for-9/mn/1011101/

Will they finally give Pocahontas and Mulan a genuine makeover? Or will we be stuck with those same dolls forever...

Chiffon Ball Gown Barbie (last doll in the Black & White collection) goes on sale next week. Platinum label, Fan Club exclusive.

I hope they make a Beast doll with a head that sits properly while they're at it.

Part of me wonders if they're even continuing the prince dolls. They stopped making the villains, after all.

>They are more than likely trying to clear them out to make way for this year's batch of Classic dolls.

They have them priced at 2 for $20 all year long at my local Disney Store. Last year when my local Disney Store was trying to make room for the new 2015 dolls they placed the old ones at the back of the store and priced them at around $7 each.

That said they are great dolls and the price is more than fair. I really liked the 2015 dolls. The almost got them all. The Beast and Aladdin were my favs.

Heres a side by side of how they looked in 2014 vs 2015. I don't really know how they are going to top 2015 this year unless they just re-release the same dolls in new looking boxes.

The reason the 2015 line looked so good is because they used the exact same molds from expensive doll sets that sold for around $130 per couple.

It's the cheap way out. Jakk's Pacific made a very pretty China Doll from Oz the Great and Powerful, and it's brought down by this crappy fabric. It's why I won't be buying their Alice dolls unless they're on sale because that fabric is not worth $29.99-$69.99.

Thats the thing that makes me saddest. The second doll you linked isn't even Alice, its Cinderella, but in trying to make them realistic they just gave them both manjaw. I feel like Mattel tends to do better real people faces. Not great, but better.

A nearby Target had some of the new Fashionista doll&fashion sets in and damn Mattel quality control needs to get a grip. All three of the sets in stock had very warped/squished faces, ranging from looking like their heads were in a squeezer to the petite doll's face being smashed in. And it couldn't have been shipping damage because the boxes were in perfect condition and it was only the faces that were fucked. I only took a picture of the tall doll.

Negative review of the Misty Copeland doll. Yikes, Mattel. Yikes.

https://dollsaga.wordpress.com/2016/05/14/misty-copeland-barbie-is-she-collectible/

>her head is full of glue, her body is badly made: large holding marks on both sides of her neck, deep scratches on both arms, rough seams on legs, her arms are not evenly varnished, so they are partially shiny and partially Matte. the sewn-on fashion is made of cheap stretchy polyester knit & tulle, the head-piece is more ridiculous!

I don't even care what they do anymore frankly. I lost all respect for them when I saw fat barbie on toy shelves this year. I'm not boycotting them or anything. I don't care about them that much. Does anyone collect vintage Barbies?
>>
>>5672818
I lost respect for you said you don't tolerate the opinion of that other person.
>>
>>5673061
How old is old enough to consider "vintage" barbies?

I try to by ones from the 80s and 90s whenever I find one at a good price since those are the ones that I wasn't allowed to have as a child.
>>
>>5673333
1959 - 1979 is considered vintage
1980 - 1999 is considered retro
2000 - today is considered modern
>>
>>5673738
ehhh,
-the vintage era is more so 1959 to 1964/1965,
-the Mod era is 1965-1972,
-the best buy era/Mattel suffers the economy era 1973-1977,
-the Superstar/retro era is 1978-1989,
-the Pink "Collectors" era was 1990-1999,

and 2000s onwards is considered modern with its own subsets (like Barbie using the bellybutton body, and the Generation Girl sculpt until 2014. She got a new face in 2015 but her "original" body sculpt in 2016 is actually super different to the 2000s era)
Anyway, dolls from the vintage era tend to have only fans for that specific era and shit so yeah.

I tend to collect the Vintage and Mod era dolls, and a lot of 2000s era dolls since I think the dolls in between are fucking ugly.
>>
>>5673061
I've got a few. Mostly ones I've picked up very cheaply due to being in bad shape and fixed them up. I've had a few where the hair just literally crumbled off so they got fun color reroots, but I do try to keep them original otherwise.

Oh and locally there's a retro toy store, it definitely focuses more on boy toys like most of those seem to but they have a LOT of very cheap 80s/90s/early 00s Barbies that they get through estates. Been picking up a bunch of the 90s repro dolls plus some old Fashion Avenue and BMR sets.
>>
>>5673061
I don't collect them specifically but I have a 1970 Twist and Turn PJ, and a '64-'66 Straight Leg Midge with a Garden Party set (minus the gloves). I found them in a big box of 90s Barbies at a thrift store.
>>
I really need to get my hands on this doll, original or the 2009 repro. Can't get seem to get them in goood/new condition for a good price anywhere. I'm a huge Jem fan and need this in the collection.
>>
>>5674276

>>
>>5673738
>1980 - 1999 is considered retro
No, it's not. It makes no sense at all.

Repro Barbies are retro. Silkstones are often retro. Poppy Parker is retro. >>5674276 This doll is retro.

80's 90's Barbies are either vintage or just old.

My problem with these kinds of exclusives from such a hugely known brand, is that it usually only makes the doll overpriced, because it's mostly scalpers who will be getting them.

Ugh. Disney pulled this shit with Star Wars and Once Upon a Time at the last D23. "Oh hey you know this insanely internationally popular franchise and this generally popular newish TV show that people have been clamoring for merchandise for? Exclusive!!"
>>
>>5675001
>>5675064
To be fair there is some hope: they did the same with Wonder Woman Barbie last year. Premiered her as a SDCC exclusive, then the next year opened her up to more sales.
>>
>>5675111
It's a good thing. They are testing whether merch will sell for those properties and if the Comic con exclusive stuff sells well then it will come to retail. If it sells bad however it will not.

Same thing happened with the Integrity Jem dolls. First one was a comic con exclusive, sold out fast and so they made a ton more different dolls.

Patience.
>>
>>5674950
Another update from MattyCollector says she'll have costume changes. I'm hoping that the multiple costume version will be what is the SDCC exclusive, then a standard one for general sale.

Honestly if you didn't point out that it was a fan made Slave dress I wouldn't have noticed. I'd rather make my own red slave dress or pay a friend to make me one than pay those ass raping online prices the D23 expo exclusive limited edition doll sell for. The dress could even be improved upon. Shes supposed to be a sexy slave girl yet the doll itself....doesn't look all that sexy to be honest.

If you're not going to make the dress look movie accurate (which the D23 red dress isn't) you might as well go all out. I would have like it to look more like image related. In the color red of course.

>>
>>5687216
Nope, sadly. We don't even know if we're getting articulated curvy dolls. It's a bit complicated because Mattel's latest move was to make 4 cheaper super articulated "regular" dolls in the main skin tones, basically aimed at people who buy them and swap the bodies with different heads. But with the new body sizes that would be 9 dolls, minimum, assuming they only did the white, somewhat tan, then a darker brown skin tone.

What is your absolute lowest threshold for selling on old dolls?

I have a bunch of in-box (many very badly damaged due to living in a shitty climate with shitty storage options) Barbie dolls from the 80s and 90s that I need to sell, but my time is limited, I only have about a week. Even in great condition, most of them are only worth 35-50 at the higher end, so I can't imagine they'd be worth much beat up as they are.

TL;DR: have a bunch of collectible Barbies that were damaged in storage. Is it worth trying to sell them for a pittance, or should I donate them to a charity shop and hope some kid enjoys playing with retro, giant-haired Babs?

Sell them online for a pittance. That way you're at least getting something and someone online who's been looking for your dolls can finally have them. If you've only got a week list'em and anything not sold goes to charity.

I got Misty Copeland Barbie in the mail today. I don't debox so none of the flaws are visible, but somehow just knowing they're there is driving me crazy.

I have to be able to make at least $4 profit per doll after shipping. So if it costs $5 to ship the doll, I have to at least be able to sell it for $9 with shipping.

Super big doll auction happening June 8th in the UK. Vintage to retro Barbies, Takara Barbie, Sindy, Bild Lilli, Barbie fashions and accessories, Jem, Ashton Drake, etc etc.

http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10156?page=1

They do ship internationally. A lot of these lots are undervalued... I'm so tempted for a lot of the vintage Takara Barbies and 70s Barbies and fashions.

>>
>>5702460
>specially sculpted muscular MtM style articulated body
>changeable hand system
>multiple weapons
>three full outfits
I'm betting they will release a more basic version for regular retail eventually because that's a lot of effort for a one-off. Probably similar to the Ever After/Monster High/Descendants mode of each character having slightly tweaked appearances with new outfits every run.
>>
>>5702332
>Matty Collector will accept preorders
>but you have to pick it up in person at SDCC

then what is the flying fuck point of taking preorders if the people can go to SDCC and get the doll anyway, jesus.
>>
>>5702556
See >>5702875

>>5702582
I'm impressed. It definitely looks like the Made to Move body, but retooled with better hips/thigh articulation so she doesn't have that creepy box-shaped thigh gap the MtM dolls get when they're not wearing pants.
>>
>>5702875
>>5703163
Honestly going to SDCC does not guarantee shit. I've been there three times and have woken up at ungodly hours to get in line and walked out with nothing. Mainly because the lines are already full with fucking shop vendors. And you want linger close because the line police tell you to not linger. It's bull.

Nowdays I just cough up the extra money during the first week on ebay. I refuse to go into the vendor's places at the con and pay their scalper prices.
>>
>>5703237
I just quoted >>5702875 because it was discussing the SDCC release. Not because I agree or disagree with their pre-order situation. It doesn't apply to me.

Honestly, I'll keep my fingers crossed it gets a new line of She-Ra products going, but I can't justify the cost of the exclusives plus mark-up and international shipping, on top of a shitty exchange rate. If it were just the mark-up and exchange rate? I'd be happy to cough up the service fee, but the shipping kills me every time. I got lucky that I was over in the US last year for around the same time, so I was able to get a couple of exclusives I wanted without breaking the bank, but this year, it's just not happening.

>And at the moment, neither is hasbro. either that, or they're doing different approaches to how to make it work.

What do you mean? Right off the bat, Hasbro has:

Marketed all the princesses and marketed them in the way that popular kid's toys today need to be marketed: as characters with distinct personalities, likes/dislikes, etc., instead of generic Barbie dolls

Released a line of budget friendly colorful dolls that hits the marks for kids (pretty and colorful clothes, all their favorite characters) and adults (they price as low as $8 in some stores).

Released a line of budget friendly little figures with a "collect them all" mentality due to the fact that all the clothes and pieces can be swapped, again great for little kids (pretty/colorful, lots of favorite characters and favorite movie moments) and adults (basic figures are $4-5, highest sets are $15-19)

And that's on top of Hasbro gradually increasing/expanding the doll line with more elaborate dolls.
>>
>>5715154
About a 60/40 split
>>
>>5715184
Also, Hasbro had a 41%+ growth in the first quarter of 2016, with their Disney Princess, Frozen, and Descendants dolls making up the bulk of that.

Huh, I guess there really is no accounting for tastes. Personally, I have found The Little Kingdom dolls to be pretty bad; weird faces that look nothing like the characters, rather unattractive outfits and really bad quality in terms of the outfits or decorations actually staying on.

Thanks to the new upcoming Emma Watson Beauty and the Beast film Disney Store is probably going to do another $80 plus doll box set and re-release the animated version on Blu ray again. Just like with past $80 box sets you wont be able to buy the side characters like Jafar, Genie, Ursula, or Vanessa separately.

The new box set will probably include Belle, Beast, The same skinny Gaston, Philippe the horse and maybe a few mini PVC figures of the enchanted objects for only $79.99.

Welcome to the world of Disney Store dolls. Get ready to pay $80 if you want him since he is no longer be sold separately for $10.

Disney only spends a little extra time and money on their pricy Limited Edition dolls. In fact the reason the Prince and Princess face molds look so nice now is because they started using the face molds from the pricey Fairytale Designer doll sets which they sold for around $140 per set after tax. >>5665504

It won't be too hard to at least make some money back by selling off the rest of the set, if all someone wants is Gaston, at least. You could make at least $40 selling the rest of the set on ebay, if not more.

It's what I ended up doing with the $210 live action Cinderella set since I bought it just for the stepfamily.

I still can't get over it that the evil twin sisters in this set have their faces switched.

Because I want them...? Besides they aren't identical. Each one has a different colored dress. Not to mention some fierce looking footwear.

I got them for my birthday and noticed that there was something wrong right away. Disney fixed the issue a few months down the line and I swapped the incorrect set for the error free set. Sadly one of them had a lower hair line than the other sister did. So once Disney swapped their hair you could still see the hair line mark where the other sisters hair used to go.

I'am a guy...I will like to start collecting some barbies. .any tips on how to buy them? Or should you just stick to online shopping.
>>
>>5736711
If you are going to buy them in stores you have a few options.

You can walk down the doll section like a boss and not give a shit about anyone who might look at you oddly.

You can go during a dead week day when you know that nobody will be there or wait for anyone that might be in the section to leave. Just try not to look creepy as you pass by to check. Don't even turn your head just look from the side of your eyes.

You can go with a female and pretend you're not even the one interested in the dolls and that you are just there keeping her company.

If you are older most people will think you are a dad shopping for his daughter, a scalper, or a collector.

If you go alone and you don't wanna give off a creepy vibe dress well. No black T-shirts or creeper wear.

Remember no matter what you have every right to go into the doll section as any woman does. Odds are if you don't talk to anyone they wont talk to you.

just fucking buy it without trying to justify it to strangers. No one fucking cares if you're an adult buying a doll, it's only if you're insecure and trying to tell people that you're not into dolls that people want you to leave them alone. Just buy what you want, say it's a present for someone if anyone asks then leave.

But why do you think Disney would actually make 3 identical dolls of minor characters who don't have a significant role in the story?
>>
>>5736630
Let us also not forget the Charlotte doll, which has blatantly and hugely crossed eyes, and absolutely no one at Disney stopped at any point during this process and said: waaaaaaaait a minute. They released a non crossed eyed version years later.

This. You can also ask for a gift recite. That way they'll think it really is a gift intended for someone else.

I know they would be a long shot but I see no real reason why they couldn't have included Belles father or at least Lefou.

>I know they would be a long shot but I see no real reason why they couldn't have included Belles father or at least Lefou.

Because the doll set is designed to appeal to a child market. Kids want the princess, her prince, cute friendly sidekicks, and the villain. A doll of a fat bumbling father or a fat bumbling villain sidekick just aren't going to be a priority. I'm sure at least Maurice will be in the new figure set, though.

The Little Mermaid pack included Ariel's father. Just because Belles father is a bumbling fat father doesn't make him any less lovable. It also came with not one but two villains which basically gave us two Ursula dolls.

Just saying....

For Triton, they had already made the doll the previous year (remember that year they had villain & friend dolls & fashion sets? good times!) they just upped the size of the mold. He's also the most obvious choice of the humanoid characters to round out the set, since the only other options would be Grimsby or the Chef. (Or one sister.) Vanessa was just Ariel with different colors, and is double engaging on a kid's level because she's a villain and a girl doll.

Making Maurice would require an entirely new body mold, new face mold, and quite frankly I'm afraid they'd do the weird beanbag thing they did with the fairy godmother.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want a Maurice doll, I'm just saying from a business stand point, Disney would consider a Maurice doll a risky and fruitless venture. Kids aren't clamoring for Maurice, in the same way they aren't clamoring for Hercules or other characters Disney ignores now.

Does anyone remember how the 90s dolls they only made the princess and prince and maybe some supporting friends of equal attractiveness, and then for all the older characters or villains they just included a bulky outfit and a rubber mask that popped over whatever extra Barbie you had around?
>>
>>5738306
Not only do I remember I still have those masks.

Looks like they're finally letting out more stock of DC Super Hero Girls. Still haven't found Ivy or Harley but I was finally able to get Wonder Woman and Super Girl.

My local Target store has had them shelf warming since they were released. They might have sold one or two.

lucky! I have 5 targets within an hour drive and the only thing they kept in stock were the accessories like the shield etc
>>
>>5739931
All my store has is Harley and Ivy. I can't find Batgirl anywhere.

Triton and Ursula's molds were already made years and years ago by Simba toys, and Vanessa is a recolour of Ariel. Disney isn't going to make new molds unless its for the collectors doll lines first, then they'll slowly introduce it later for the general public.

Do you know the best place to buy them online? I'd kinda like to get a recent one.

well think about it. one less part, one less color of paint they have to use. if you're producing thousands of olafs, you can increase margins slightly by just not giving him a nose. doll brands have truly just stopped giving a shit because they know most kids and doll reviewers wont care about a detail like that.

Looks like Ariel's new tale is made out of that cheap stuff Mattel used to use that feels lick paper and wrinkles easily. I hope I'm wrong.

See, if the actual releases of Alice and Cinderella live action had contouring like this they'd be perfect. The plastic, un-subscattered skin on the hyperrealistic face is what gives them mumps face.
