Fucking Studio Halfeye

Getter toys in general are completely fucked. SRC Shin Getter is shit, the revoltechs have all doubled in price, and most everything else is +100 bucks, usually in the 300-1000$ range.

Also we didn't get any worthwhile Neo Getter or Getter Go toys aside from revoltech.

Getter 2 looks like ass, but I kinda like this lanky Black Getter. It looks sorta reimagined in a wonky old-school robot style. Like sorta Tezuka-ish.

>>5593465
This looks rad.

Anyway OP, to answer your question...Studio Halfeye is an extremely small operation doing extremely small runs of toys. On top of that, they are quite possibly the most brilliant engineers in the toy biz, known for their "Perfect Change" figures which are capable of extremely complex/show-accurate transformations. One of the best examples of their mad genius is Perfect Drive Change Godannar. I don't know shit about this series, but I do know that this toy is capable of changing from red to blue WITHOUT partsforming, and it also contains a fully articulated figure folded up within its chest cavity!

tl;dr: with Halfeye you are paying for some genius-level engineering and transformations, from a tiny team, in a tiny run of toys. All of these things stack up pricewise.
>>
>>5593677
Also, probably the WORST decision I ever made, was scoffing at the $80 pricetag on Sentinel's Black Getter and passing on it. I still think it's the best looking Black Getter ever made, and it's ridiculously out of my pricerange now.
>>
>>5593678
I wouldn't be too hard on myself, those proportions look horrid. Kinda regret not being able to get the SRC though
>>
>>5593678
>I still think it's the best looking Black Getter ever made
It definitely is. How much is it worth now?
>>
>>5593677
One of the reasons I dig SHE so much is because the design work is (to my knowledge) all done by one guy, Hajime Takashima. He's on my "list of people to meet before I die" list, right alongside Masami Obari.
>>
>>5593685
Eh, to each his own. I like em.

>>5593686
It's like 17k at Mandy right now. I mean, I guess the price could be worse (some have sold for over 2K recently), but it's still too rich for my blood. Hell, it was too rich at $80 even.

Because until recently no other company could offer transformable getters, and even now the only alternative is a chibi.

>>5593692
>"list of people to meet before I die"
Or before THEY die. Remember Fewture's doc robot ;_;

>>5593547
They transform. OP's can even do all three robots with the same ships. There's only one other toy in existence that does that and it came like 15 years after Halfeye's. It's obvious with the way they designed the current simple change line though, that they intend to make a new triple changer.
>>
>>5593759
>They transform
I know but I don't care, they look awful. Getter is an impossible design to engineer into a transformable figure.
>>
>>5593787
Well, fine, you don't care, but for all the people who DO, Halfeye exists and is making small quantities of product to satisfy their needs.
>>
The thing that eats me up about SHE is how fragile they are. You'd think with the exorbitant prices attached to them they'd be made out of HQ plastic.
>>
>>5593867
Well, resin is high quality, it's just kinda brittle. My Simple Change Dragonkaiser survived a ton of manhandling due to its fiddly transformation (though of course I was being far more careful than usual with it).
>>
>>5593873
Er, I suppose that should be "as a result of its fiddly transformation"
>>
>>5593796
They still look awful.
>>
>>5593677

There's a difference between smart engineering and "if we throw enough parts it'll eventually work"
>>
>>5593927
It's a good thing they don't do that then.
>>
>>5593928
>70,000 yen
>they don't do that
okay
>>
>>5593936
But they don't, their figures have numerous parts for a reason.
>>
>>5593939
So they threw enough parts at it until it worked. Smart engineering is more for less.

>Questioning SHE engineering

Ok...
>>
>>5593949
>Of course, HasTak is currently the master of making transforming toys on a budget
Yeah, because they constantly compromise engineering and detail in numerous ways to keep costs down. Not to mention they're running a bigger operation, much like Bandai. Of course they'll be able to produce things at a cheaper cost than a small company making resin kits by hand.

I'm sure if Takashima worked on something for Bandai, it would be at the exact same level as SHE's releases in terms of parts count and complexity. The only difference would be the materials used and lower production cost.
>>
>>5593958
Are you implying the helmet delivery thing is some amazing feat of engineering? MP Star Saber accomplishes the same thing and the way the legs on Valks are delivered are also of a similar concept.
>>
>>5593961
If Takashima worked for Bandai, I'd guess that they would reign in his parts count.
Engineering isn't just how complex and numerous part there are. It's that and taking into account mold placement, paint apps, materials, play pattern, and how those factors affect the final product. Paint rub being an example of when the way that play and paint apps interact is overlooked.
>>
>>5593994
>It's that and taking into account mold placement, paint apps, materials, play pattern, and how those factors affect the final product

But that's what SHE does, have you ever actually handled any of their stuff? Also, their pieces have no real play pattern, as they are not meant for play.

>>

>But that's what SHE does, have you ever actually handled any of their stuff?
No, I might track down a Might Gaine if Bandai never gets around to it though. Most of the aesthetic compromises they make are a bit off putting for the cost of their products.
>their pieces have no real play pattern,
Seeing as they transform, their play pattern is transforming.
>>
>>5594009
But they aren't toys - no play intended. They transform, sure, but that would be like saying the play pattern of a folding chair is to unfold.
>>
>>5594007
Okay, if that little drill and brain dome isn't partsformed, that's cool. I will also concede that if that's how the helmet attaches in the show the animators were kind of clever with the foresight.
>>
>>5594013
We must be getting caught up on semantics. I use play pattern to mean how the consumer interacts with the toy. I don't see how they aren't toys.
>>
>>5594017
The brain dome does partsform, but when you consider that Lagann is around the size of a penny it would be pretty much impossible to make the dome not partsform and have the drill be internal as well.

Here's a video of the transformation, if you like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ah_lA6wy5yU

>>5594023
You have to look at them more as "art pieces" than toys. I know that sounds kinda pretentious, but they truly are not, at least not when compared to other action figures.

When you consider that most of the time you have to loosen and tighten a screw when moving a piece so as to not break anything, they lose that toyetic factor and become something else. At least that's how I see it, and is what their website alludes to.
>>
>>5594023
They're generally too fragile to play with and do not conform to toy regulations, as they explain on their about page, and should not be mistaken for toys. They're functional display pieces.
>>
>>5593961
>>5593994
Didn't Takashima actually work for Bandai on the SOC gunbuster? I remember reading something about that.
>>
>>5594034
>You have to look at them more as "art pieces" than toys.
I can understand this sentiment, but I don't fully agree with it as toy and art piece isn't mutually exclusive.
>you have to loosen and tighten a screw when moving a piece so as to not break anything
This would remedied by mass production level materials and assembly. I would like to see how the SHE guy does on a retail toy. I'm still hoping for that SoC Escaflowne.
>>
>>5594080
That would be very interesting if true. And thanks for reminding me I need to get a SoC Gunbuster you motherfucker.
>>
>>5594082
>toy and art piece isn't mutually exclusive
That's true. Though it is certainly accurate that they don't conform to toy regulations, as >>5594078 pointed out.

>do not conform to toy regulations
I don't think that a toy needs to conform to retail regulations to be classified as a toy either. Independent toy manufacturers like all those 3P companies, Maketoy and the like, certainly don't.
>>
>>5594095
>second worst GL form
Eugh, no thanks.
>>
>>5594097
3p companies go for a certain level of playability though, at least usually. Studio HalfEye makes no attempt to. For me, that coupled with the way they are meant to be handled takes them out of the toy classification.
>>
>>5594100
If the creator has no interest in creating toys then I will capitulate, but I don't see why we would be discussing them on the toy board if that were the case.
Personally, I feel that saying it's not a toy is too much of a cop out to excuse parts of the product. I think anything you physically interact with and manipulate for the purposes of entertainment could be considered a toy if the intention of the creator is such. I would think that the SHE kits fit into that category.
>>
>>5594106
I definitely get where you're coming from. Though, I still don't think there's anything that needs to be excused. SHE makes crazy complex transformations because that's the only way to meet their no-compromise standard - barring their Simple Change series, but thats a slightly different story.

Anyway, it's been fun but I really must be getting to sleep. Always happy to talk about my favorite manufacturer.
>>
>>5594118
I feel like some high end manufacturers are almost embarrassed by being labeled as a toy company. They have to add and change terms. Call it an art piece, collectors item, high end toy, high end collectible, prop replica, whatever. I don't think toy should be held to reverence or contempt.

Good night, anon. It's always fun to have discussions with people who don't agree.

I've ordered from them about a total of 5 times. Two separate orders they've said that to me. They were pre orders and there wasn't any "low stock" or back order on anything.

That Ryoma is surprisingly affordable. Sucks that the Benkei / Musashi apparently won't be articulated. Seriously what the hell?

Brutal. Did you still have to pay for it?
>>
>>5595612
