It seems to me the theme was overestimated in some places and now they got too much in stock.

If there's one thing the protectors have shown is that the current designers can work small wonders. So maybe LEGO should drop both the size and the price of the sets and focus on intriguing builds such as Korgot and Narmoto's instead.
The new bodyplates are one-use only and look like big potato chips to me (very big and flat).

If you recall, he actually helped the Toa during the Mahri saga and pretty much didn't interfere at all with the Nuva's final mission. His only goal then was to make sure Mata Nui died briefly before returning to life.
The thing is, he didn't really start formulating his master plan to assume physical control of the GSR until he was defeated by the Toa Metru. After having some time to think about it, the idea was that he'd fuck with the Matoran and keep them from returning to Metru Nui until Mata Nui was close to death. I get the idea that you can only accurately gauge Mata Nui's status from inside Metru Nui, so he didn't really know exactly how long it would take, but sustained his role as guardian for as long as possible. Fortunately for him, by the time the Toa forced their way through and returned to the city to discover the GSR's illness, they were just in time and perfectly continued his keikaku.

Well his original plan was to do like the Barraki and rule the universe as a being inside it, because Mata-Nui didn't really care about anything unless stuff stopped running smoothly. The Metru fought against that and stopped it, so that's why he fought them.
So they all left Metru-Nui, and he knew from past experience intervening in the Metru-Nui Civil War that when Metru-Nui shuts down Mata-Nui starts to die. And he must have just known that Mata-Nui's consciousness would leave under the coliseum after he died so it was a chance to actually take over the universe. The Mata were going to wake up Mata-Nui and probably take the Matoran back to Metru-Nui before Mata-Nui would be in a bad enough state to start dying, so he needed to delay them and that's why he fought them.
He needed the Ignika to inject life back into the universe right after it died, so that's why he helped the Mahri.
The problem is that all of this was badly conveyed. I think what I'd have done to make sure the audience knew it was this:
