I honestly believe if they did that, along with giving the figure a matte finish it would be just as good as a monster arts minus a few points of articulation.

I think the soft sculpt is going for this look, rather than being ultra detailed.
You have to blur things up if you want to give it a sense of scale.
Take this for instance. Most people just think of the underside of the space shuttle ot be smooth and black, but that's not really the case. Only when you're close up do you really get to see that sort of detail.
Godzilla is something you see from afar and you're not going to see all those tini-tiny details. To see those detail kinda ruins the effect of him being a giant.

Hasbro saw a cool design and decided to run with it, basically. Quality wise its about the same as most Hasbro collector toys of the era; i.e. Star Wars Vintage series or Marvel Legends, just slightly higher. If you're anal about paint details and expect something on the level of the best of Monster Arts, you'll be disappointed, especially given the size. as a toy, though, its crazy fun. Its not as left-field for Hasbro or other American kid's toy company as you make it out to be; Hasbro was actually doing pretty good stuff at the time overall.

It was released for a compilation film festival, and the story itself is a discourse on using media (in this case Godzilla movies) as a substitution for parentings. I've always found it interesting that universally speaking it's the only Godzilla movie where Godzilla doesn't actually exist. Honestly I would agree with you. It's an interesting commentary on then-contemporary Japan. I think people forget it was done by Ishiro Honda himself, and it seems like he was trying to step outside the boundaries of a typical kaiju movie and a reflection of what Honda may have seen Godzilla become; from a reaction to post-war horrors, to kids born long after the war seeing him as escapism. In a way its a poetic sort of change. I also detect some slight Ozu feeling, as far as the portrayal of everyday life, or the shots of urban sprawl that feels like Honda was experimenting a little.
That said, I still think he mixed Son of Godzilla up with it.

I kinda like of stiff he is, considering he's regenerating and most of his body is half assed it makes sense. I'm torn on the hands though, he's always posing his palms upward as if he's suffering and that's cool but then I think it might just be Anno referencing himself like with the row of tanks.

GMK eyes were based, but they're just too small here. Maybe if there wasn't a pupil they would've looked better.
