And since I'm on a "G1 beast combiners" thought train right now, I've got to say they could probably totally get the last 3 combiners out of a few molds if they wanted. A basic beast body for the limbs would probably just need to be a cube. Add 4 ball joint legs, a ball joint head, and you can probably work out most of the Predacons, Seacons, and whatever the group name for Abominus was. Robot mode legs could be like Dead End, just flop some panels out and unfold, arms the same.

Personally though the blue guy was always Rumble to me, because thats both what I remember from the cartoon, and because he was always the one using the pistons to cause earthquakes.
But for clarity's sake (because the toys, comics, etc.) when discussing it, I end up calling him Frenzy, because he's Frenzy.

Watch the G1 cartoon. Rumble is a smart-ass punk who is constantly issuing sick burns to Starscream and may as well be the 3rd-in-command. Frenzy, on the other hand, is literal who background-filler extra tier.
Not saying that Sunbow is the one holy canon but it one of the most influential works of the franchise.

Post Movie the Blue Tape Punk was packed in with the only new Decepticon tape, Ratbat. So maybe it might have been to help push that set. Of course given the name mix ups and sources like the pre-movie story bible saying stuff like 'don't use Buzzsaw since he comes with Soundwave' maybe they meant to push the red one who was still being sold but didn't have a new figure and the name screw ups messed that up.

They respect two individuals in the whole universe: Megatron and Soundwave. And they'll fuck with anyone else.
Personally, I opine that Frenzy is usually red, because of his more frantically aggressive personality and the sharp screeching nature of the sounds he produces, and Rumble blue because he's more blunt force trauma and I associate his subsonic noises more with blue.

They're twins. They're not identical. They're both aggressive little bastards, but Rumble is a barroom brawler and Frenzy is a fucking psycho. Rumble talks shit before he smashes your face in with a pool cue. Frenzy won't talk to you at all, just stab you in the eye.
But it's hard to gauge their deeper nuances because literally nobody feels a need or desire to hang out with them.

No idea so far, but in my opinion, it's probably:
-Takara Nosecone
-Afterburner is a mess, since the Hasbro version doesn't have toy accurate colors, and Takara will definitely go for cartoon accuracy (so the only difference between them will probably be the color of the windshield, so this is literally a matter of preference)
-Hasbro Strafe since it will be slimmer, and better match Afterburner
Takara Scattershot, but I would probably use parts from both Scattershots (Takara's new combiner head, vehicle mode parts, and any other improvements while keeping everything else from the Hasbro version)
-Takara weapons
-Lightspeed is tricky. Basically go for Takara for combined mode, but Hasbro for everything else.
-Hasbro hand/feet parts
-Hasbro Scrounge and his Targetmaster (bonus is you used Hasbro Lightspeed)

You know, I got the first Combiner Wars Optimus a couple days ago and was pleasantly surprised. Unlike Motormaster, the shoulders actually stay locked in torso mode.

I really like CW Optimus. He has very...Heroic? I guess is the word I'm looking for, proportions. The big-ass arms, the dynamic looking legs, etc. Only real fault in my eyes is that his head could stand to be a bit bigger like Motormaster.

The PE plastic crotch thingy is what I got on recommendation from /toy/ here, so I use that.

Oh, yeah. Thats it. You don't really need replacement hips with that thing though, because it basically locks the hips and you use Motormaster's knees as the hips, more or less. It restricts poseability a bit, but you can still get a pretty nice range.

I didn't particularly like the body set myself. The sword extension is wicked, yeah, but I don't like the idea of losing the outward hip motion even if it isn't particularly useful. The hands and feet seem to bestow more than enough stability for that if you orient the legs that same way.

Love the sword extension. whole kit does work best with the PE hands/feet of course, though. Plus it fills Menasor out a bit and there isn't that weird super tiny waist anymore with the crotchplate kit.

Correct, but it conveniently works as an excuse to use less paint apps which is why I'm not in astrotrain's favor.
Also galvatron is an oddity, his initial g1 toy colors were mostly silvers yet all past ones from hasbro are just dumbed down versions of what takara is doing, apart from galvatronus/grand galvatron is cw/uw in which takara gave us a gloriously repainted g1 toy colored version.

Man, this pictures highlight how skinny Galvatrons legs are compared to his body. Having such a huge torso and skinny legs makes the whole thing fall apart.
Astrotrain, on the other hand, looks pretty good. Shuttle mode needed painted windows, and train mode needed something for the fist area to merge better with the train, but proportions are alright.
