I am looking for an Astro Boy figure with these qualities:
- good articulation
- 1/12 scale
- Not from the Imagine 2009 movie
- Has a happy face
Does this figure exist and not too pricy?
Nope. If you were willing to compromise on one or more of those points, you might have some luck, but as-is, there's nothing that meets all of those requirements.
Closest you're going to get is the Medicom Miracle series, and it's not really a great figure.
I'm not op but I'm also interested. I've seen photos of Tezuka himself with merchandise all the time, but there's nothing recent? (that isn't from that awful movie?) It's a real shame. All those high end Japanese figure makers and nothing aside from a few limited run gashapon looking things...

Might as well enjoy the bandai ones or the jazwares ones anyway. I've had and enjoyed the latter as a stand-in for not having any good Mega Man toys
there is a new series coming in 2017. there will be toys, i'm sure. hopefully decent ones. art style is quite different from 2003 series though.

Best Astro I can find is a korean release of the bandai one for the 2000 anime.

Is the 2003 anime good? I've heard mixed things in it, animation seems really good. I've only been exposed to astro boy from the game astro boy omega factor and the few episodes of the 60's anime I saw as a kid.

I've heard the story and characters aren't good from certain reviews in it. I've tried watching the 80's anime but it seemed extremely half assed and the 60's anime, well I'm sure it was good for the time? From the little I've seen of 2003 it seemed good enough, I'll watch some more before I make a opinion. Is the 2003 dub good or should I go subs? Also what to you recommend for reading the comic, is their a good collection of all/most of the astro boy manga? Sorry for the probably obvious questions but researching it every collection I found had negative reveiws.

I watched the 2003 series as a kid. I fucking loved it. The animation was gorgeous and it was pretty dark.
Wasn't 2003 the year they released that Tetsujin 28 remake as well? I hear that was superb (and also absolutely terrifying).

I'm willing to forgive the problems the 2003 anime had because it gave us one of the best damn licensed games ever. Introduced me to most of Tezuka's works and the Star System.

The old RAH Black Jack looks good if you're into 1/6 stuff and don't mind semi-dated articulation(I think it still uses the New Combat Joe). If it's like other old RAHs it'll probably go for well under retail too.

The 2002 show is a mixed bag, the animation is amazing and the story arc pays off pretty well however the dub and the music aren't amazing. Biggest gripe is many fan favorite characters aren't as fun or just shadows of who they are.
The 60s (black and white) show is amusing but not really a great interpretation. What you want is to watch the 80s anime, now that verison is amazing and the definitive cartoon. The new one looks fun but it won't be the Astro we know and love.
With all that said, I'd kill for a Figuarts/Figma/Gokin/whatever of Astro. The figure I have is the American Bandai figure for the 2002 show which has a great sculpt and paint app but the articulation is absolutely terrible.

Is this the game that when you think you finally beat the game some crazy deus-ex machina comes out of the fucking blue and destroys the world with you in it but you're saved by a phoenix and sent back in time and you get to replay all the game but not only do you have to beat the normal bad guys again you have to solve the mystery of this deus ex machina thing you hadn't accounted for before?
