I like him a lot, too, but he got hosed. Popularity in Dragon Ball is a power levels game, so its not surprising to me that new, powerful characters like Whis get figures before old favorites. I really wish Tien could've stayed relevant in the story and stay neck-and -neck with Goku, he was the best rival character. Piccolo mellowed out too easily, and I always thought Vegeta was a whiny bitch with entitlement issues. I mean, he went Super Saiyan through self-pity, I can't respect that at all.

The thing is he just gave everyone BUT the Saiyans a peak in terms power level and in turn in relevance to the series. First Krillin and Yamcha reached a peak, then Tien, then Piccolo. We never see them get any stronger at all after a certain point in the series. Yamcha just straight up gave up martial arts. There was that moment where Guru unlocked Krillin's hidden potential on Namek but we didnt see anything out of that.
It's all about the Saiyan's these days. Toriyama even made Bardock a Super Saiyan for absolutely no reason.

Krillin survived a direct hit from Perfect Cell and it was strong enough for Krillin to get a solid read on his energy level.
Krillin's Kienzan, with no powertraining, was enough to cut through Frieza. It was also so strong that Vegeta actually had to tell Nappa to avoid it, and Vegeta later copied it himself to cut Oozaru Gohan's tail.
Krillin at least has the strongest self-developed technique in the series. Kikoho is strong, but Kienzan > All. Mankankosappo a close second.

Agreed.People buy way too hard into the Z/Saiyan Saga divide. In truth a lot of Dragon ball resembles Z and vice versa. People say Z started the darker storylines, but DB had the whole Piccolo arc, which was the first major dark part of the series, with characters dying left and right and seemingly no hope of resurrection. People say DBZ didn't have humor, but you had stuff like the Ginyu Force's antics, Mr. Satan, and a lot of the Buu arc. Super just follows that tradition but people are so set in their perception of DB being like the darkest parts of the saiyan or Cell saga, but considering how things left off in Buu saga it should've been obvious where things were going.

Kai is censored garbage (yes, the Japanese BD are still censored) full of inconsistent animation due to losing/damaged animation cels. Problem is they didn't even TRY to color match and add film grain to help it match. It was just modern lazy animation slapped in the show.
Unless they are willing to redraw those scenes AND make them match visually AND remove all the censorship they added AND add the filler back in I have zero interest in Kai. It's truly amazing how sub-par it is in comparison to most home releases.

You know, I get why people would go with Kai, but I'm starting to dislike how people are taking it as the definitive DBZ experience. if you really, truly want DBZ without "filler"(a term I really hate) you really should just read the manga. Even watching Kai you're still getting an interpretation of the original, not the pure thing.
I like the manga best because I think the whole thing makes for a great experience, and Toriyama's art is much better than what budget animation can replicate most of the time. that said, most of the time I'd rather watch the original anime than Kai. Does that make sense? It just feels like Kai is a very by the numbers adaptation while, for all of the drawn-out and slow aspects the original anime had, it also helps add character moments that Toriyama glazed through. What worked well for the pacing of the manga feels too brisk in animation.

The whole Namek thing basically amounts to a meme. Its only really noticeable if you grew up watching it in America because syndication would keep cutting off towards the end of the Ginyu force fight for about three years before dubbing recommenced, so you'd constantly see reruns of that saga. Going by episode count, the whole Namek saga is actually a little less than the whole Android arc from Trunks to Cell, and about the same as Buu. But no one says "Are they still finding more Androids?" or "Are they still fighting another Buu form" because they burned through those episodes fast once they finished off the first dub.

It is by no means the best experience of the Dragon Ball story written by Akira Toriyama
For someone with no intention of reading Dragon Ball and whose extent of knowledge of the series begins with DBZ, Kai is stellar.
That said, if the original Dragon Ball seasons got the Kai treatment with better digital restoration, that'd be killer. As someone whose never actually read the original manga and got a lot of the early story stuff from other media, I'll probably settle for buying the series in print before I try to watch the Dragon Ball dub.

Theres barely any actual filler in Dragon Ball. Most of it is just a few scenes padding out the story,but given the episodic nature of a lot of episodes, removing it would just make for shorter episodes,or weirdly patched together episodes. Even Kai wasn't that anal about filler.
There's about 20 episodes of actual,pure filler,and they're spaced out and skippable,but worth a watch honestly. Though some of the filler in DBZ was really unnecessary (such as the Garlic Jr. saga and that dumb sub plot of Gohan Krillin and Bulma helping the aliens on their way to namek), but there were some really iconic moments that really sets apart the characters and gives DBZ its charm in filler episodes, and in some cases went back to its lighthearted roots from Dragonball. I think the Whis figure looks pretty good. I don't really see the complaints. DBS's animation is all over the place, so I don't really see anything about him that looks any more or less off than the average frame of the show.
