I'm just about to start on an Eduard I16 Type 24 and I don't have an airbrush. What kind of tips does anyone have for brush painting a model?

Actually I know that feeling of despair, like the paint rubbing off my Ba-64 when I was removing dark wash with humbrol enamel thinners. I'd used mig primer, vallejo paints and a coat of satin and the paint still was stripped to the plastic. However I pulled through and it ended up looking nice. I won't be using too much thinners again.

I think I might have used too much.
I let the wash dry on my model for about 30 minutes before I scrubbed it off.
I bought this model Taihou. But I don't know what hull paint to use.
I have some other ships, and Akagi and a Kongo, and they were pretty easy to find. Sasebo Arsenal and Kure Arsenal respectively apparently.
But not finding much info on what kind of paint the Taihou should be painted in. Any help?

If you're looking for something cheap and easy, you can try some airfix. Just do 5 min of research into a kit of your fancy on scalemates and you're golden.

Again, that depends on the kit. Both of these are Academy, yet one is much more difficult to "whip up fast and have fun painting". If you were an experienced modeller, I suspect you would already know this. The kits' fit is good, but their proportions are sometimes off. Of course, not everyone cares, and if you wanted an easy build, I had a quick gander at their Hetzer and yes, it is easy for even beginners, but the painting might be tedious (depending on which version)

I used Tamiya basic putty applied with a stiff cheap artist's brush. I thinned the putty a little bit with Tamiya extra thing and dabbed it on the surface of the model. Then I used sand paper to even the out the surface until only little dimples remained.

Dis you brush paint it? You can easily get rid of the gloss by matt coating it. That 24 decal doesn't look conformed to the surface. Did you use any decal application solutions like Micro Sol and Set?

Hobby Boss is just like Trumpeter, so expect poorly-research, hastily put out kits from a chinese manyfacturer.
That said, some Trumpy / HB kits are alright, but their quality is lacking in comparison to other Chinese and Japanese manufacturers.
What's the best way of going about painting tanks with these types of tracks? Fit them to the road wheels and assembling them separately?
I was doing a tank kit and I had assembled everything at once. Make it kind of hard to get in to paint some of the finer details.

no, paint doesn't work like that, you cant add more expecting it to cover previous lumps and bumps, quite the opposite, more paint actually emphasises shitty surfaces.
you could do a little sanding with a high grit paper.
are you using a flat brush? cos you should be.
you could possible try brushing a bit of thinner on, hoping it reactivates the paint and smoothes it a bit.

probably start at 1k wet sand, go down to 800 wet for any troublesome bits, mask any hard edges you don't want to lose.
brushes don't need to be expansive, just as long as theyre not hard and bristly. synthetic sables are just fine.

I´ve been always a military geek, reading stupid crap like Commando and watching WW2 movies and documentaries and reading books about the subject. I think it's more to do with patience. I see heaps of kids get super excited at my local. When they sit down and actually try to put a 3 hour block into a kit, they cant do it and give up.
It's like most creative hobbies. You hardly ever see any good traditional artists under the age of 10. It just takes too long to build up the skill that they'd rather just waste their time on smaller, more easily attainable achievements like bideo blames.

For me at least, I got into modelling because my father used to make Warhammer models.
I had Airfix figures and various tanks and planes and would play with them. I had painted some of them, albeit badly. So all in all I had these poorly-painted playthings.
Sometime when I was twelve, I decided I liked the look of Airfix's matilda tank, and that's where my collection began.
I was modelling all throughout my teens. I think the main attraction was the feeling that it could be as realistic as I could physically make it, which motivated me to make more increasingly realistic models.

I think scale modeling comes with a different type of application. the idea of "the thrill of the build" rather than just the product. It's something that an individual will appreciate as they develop things which takes time, patience, and hard work. When I was young I played with my models so obviously building it was just an add on.

I developed a fascination for military vehicles (mostly aircraft) when I was about 12.
Then I went to an aviation museum and saw a whole room full of built aircraft models and I got interested what kind of models they are. I knew about paper models. I tried to build some myself when I was around 6 or 7 but they were old models printed on thick card board that wouldn't bend in a straight line. It was frustrating anf I lost interest. But miniatures always fascinated me.
Anyway, I found out about plastic scale models and got into the hobby when I was 16.

Well done mate, really loved the texture of the ground.
Couple of suggestions:
- Since the mud is so wet and new, the tracks and the underside in general should be a more dirty. That type of mud really ends up going everywhere when the tanks moves.
-Connected to the above, next time aim to have the tank a bit more into the ground to give a sense of weight. It will avoid looking like it is floating above the terrain.

It wasn't a far walk, I live on the second floor. Plus most of the people that in the barracks are at work right now or stay inside because its cold. I'm off duty today. Someone did see me, but we know eachother and he knows I'm into that kind of thing. I was considering adding in a couple of infantrymen, they're already assembled and ready to go. I'm not that good at painting figures right now and I'm out of a lot of paints right now. Was also thinking about making a small camp or something with a tent and maybe a campfire. Not bad mang, but:
- Are the tracks green?? You should paint the running gear of AFVs before attaching it to make your life alot easier
- The silver periscopes on the TC's hatch are really distracting, and seem a bizarre color compare to the other optics, perhaps use gloss dark blue?
- You might want to try Mr. Surfacer to replicate the cast nature of the turret as the texture is very smooth right now
- Also the weld seams at the front of the turret are too far apart, you can sculpt putty inbetween to make a good weld texture
Personally, i hate figures, to me they always ruin models. Its really not your fault here, IMO there's something about the human form that makes it hard capture realistically in scale, even big scales like 1/35.
The contrast of having a highly detailed, accurate vehicle next to (relatively) shitty human models breaks all sense of immersion for me.
Also i would definitely stay with bright lighting or the green will just disappear amidst the brown.

In my opinion scale ships take a longer time than aircraft or armour scales do to the nature of how much of a scale down is needed and how much attention to detail is needed because of it.
So if you're going to take the copious the time (like I take) when building a ship model, go all the way and get a 1/350 scale with photo etch parts.
However if you are relatively new to modeling, maybe a 1/350 carrier maybe to costly to ruin in your first go.

There's excess glue everywhere and the ERA is fucked, but I think it's salvageable. With the right paint job and some clever decals (Think silhouettes of western vehicles "claimed") it could just be written off as a "battle damaged" tank.

Maybe next time go with a larger scale, and file down/cut off the excess plastic when you're assembling it. Also don't spill glue all over it.
Try going with Tamiya's T-62 kit, its an older one but they're cheap and if you love slavshit it might not be a terrible decision.

I most surely am going with a large scale next time. Most of the problem by far is with the ERA but I also struggled with the tracks, so I'll probably take a model that doesn't use ERA. The BMP-2 is my favorite vehicle so I think I'll want to go for that next.

Start over, get extra thin glue, and use reference images + instructions when assembling

If you are using the old metal tubes you have to squeeze the edges a bit after squeezing the tube itself to get some suction in the tube so it doesn't keep coming out.

I recommend starting with Revell's newer kits if you are into 72nd scale because the T-80 line is shit. Also consider replacing your clamps with fingers. Toothpaste type glue containers are a no-no if you are new.

trumpeter does good 1/700 scale vessels, which are nice because they're relatively cheap but have modern molds. I think I saw HMS Renown on amazon for like $25 the other day. start by looking through their offerings- some of them even have small photoetch frets included in the kit, and most ship models need photoetch to look good.
Tamiya/Hasegawa/Aoshima all make very cheap 1/700 ships, but they're mostly japanese and the few that aren't are generally older molds from the mid 1970s and lack modern detail. Aoshima also just came out with a waterline HMS Ark Royal with brand new molding.
If you're really brand new to this hobby a ship isn't the greatest choice because they tend to have either fucktons of small parts or look terrible. An exception is U-boats: Revell has a couple of 1:144 scale U-boats that have relatively small part counts but still look good, and they're pretty big. they're also very easy to paint because their geometry is relatively simple.
Started painting this little bastard - BMD-2 from Ace. Used to be the only BMD-2 kit in this scale, but then S-Model released a much better one (except for the running gear).

Just finished making these wooden paint racks for my workstation. My old paint racks were really tall and poorly put together, and I spent a lot more effort on the new ones.

Here's the older, shitty ones I built. I used shitty thin poplar wood because it was cheap, and I stupidly used thin wood for the framing. I also had to use sheet metal screws because I couldn't find small enough wood screws for the shelves.
Another mistake I made was that I didn't drill sinks for the screws into the wood, mostly because the wood was so thin, but it meant the screws were sticking out from the sides.
I'm in need of a Koreanon to help me with some Academy instructions. Any help?

Thanks, it's a Artograph 1530. It's a decent spraybooth, but it's over-priced (I think I paid $350 for it at the time). Good air suction, and comes with a three-layer filter system.
I wouldn't recommend it for the following reason though, its awkward design. The fans are at the bottom of the booth, and it sucks air in vertically rather than horizontally. This forces me to stand up while airbrushing, which I prefer for priming and other quick, easy spray jobs, but it makes painting things like shading and camouflage a pain in the ass. Then again, it all depends on what type of setup you have I guess.
In the future I'm either going to build myself a custom table that the booth can sink into or I'm going to build my own airbrush booth using wood (which I did in the past albeit very crudely)

Give it a white wash for snow camo. Those were rushed on in the field as well so it will be fine.
