Three of those sets look ugly as fuck and I still want them. Fucking bonkles, man.
>>

Question is there anything redeeming about the new setting at all? I haven't actually taken the time to catch up on the new story, but we just had another big nostalgia thread in /tg/ about Bionicle.

The pictures on the back of the boxes haven't been giving me much optimism about it honestly.
>>
>>5430732
There isn't the same level of intrigue and mystery as the first few years of G1 but it's decent. It's actually fairly similar in some ways. I'd say it isn't any better or worse but just different.
>>
>>5430732
I think you should wait for The Journey to one Netflix original and see how it is, so far the new bonkle has been lacking in media exposure.

The only real problem is that 2015 barely delivered any story content. The few pieces of media that did have notable worldbuilding did an excellent job and there's still lots of untapped potential, so it should continue getting better with every piece of content we get this year.

Speaking of /tg/, has there been any real attempt at making a Bionicle tabletop RPG?

Basically, "No mention of any actual lore/setting, your character can't be a Toa, If it's based on a MOC that MOC can't exceed a certain piece-limit, and of course you know the exception to all of these rules."

>>

The story and setting are actually pretty good, unfortunatly last year they decided to have the only storytelling material for most of the year be these shitty 90 seconds animations which had awkward pacing due to their short run time.

If one ignores those and reads between the lines a bit to see the stuff that the story team actually put together versus how it was presented to us, you see a pretty cool setting. Basically instead of villages in different regions like 2001's island, you have an island that was originally just all the same biome and the villagers all lived in cities be it the capital city or the city of the mask makers, the capital ended up being turned into a crater after the great cataclysm caused by Ekimu and Makuta's battle (this cataclysm also fucked with the island itself, causing the six elements to basically manifest themselves and completely change most of the island except for a single corner which happened to be protected from the shockwave by the mountain in the middle of the island), and the city of the mask makers was later abandoned due to an invasion by monsters.

Also way before that you had six avatars of the island's elements come into being in the form of what are basically ancient / wise dragons but in the forms of a bug-like creature, shark-like creature, etc. and a being born the shadows at around the same time who's sole purpose is hunting them down.

The villages the villagers eventually moved to havent been covered too much because there are multiple villages in each elemental region so they never bothered going into detail about all of them and the villagers eventually end up moving back to the city of the mask makers anyway.

The main weakness of the setting versus G1s is the lack of terms for everything like in G1, basically everything that was in "matoran language" is just said in english now, so 'Kanohi' is just mask, "Wahi" is just region, and so on.

>this year has a simpler storyline as kids were getting confused. will come with 4x 22min netflix movies.
From what we've seen the story is a bit better than last years, not simper. Perhaps they meant something more along the lines of 'straightforward', since last years story was confusing in how poorly presented it was for most of the year. (Unless they meant in comparison to G1)
>>
>>5431025
I sure hope the comparison was with G1. Even if the media representation was a bit messy, I don't see anything in the 2015 storyline that could confuse kids to the point where Lego immediately decide they need to cut back on the complexity.

>>5431002
Well, part of the reason I started this is that Bahrag are one of the 5 sets I'm still missing from complete 02 collection (rest are Pahrak Va, Nuhvok Va, Tahnok Va and Power pack), and while everything else is in my parts bin as a fucking mess, it's the thought that counts.

And I am planning on replacing the rubber bands with generic ones if I ever make it that far

>>5431004
Exactly. And no one knows if it'll be cheaper. Generally stuff like this is cheaper to part out, but it really depends on many things.

And because totally no one asked, here's what I have so far.
>>
>>5431034
I feel like they were probably going over their whole G2 gameplan and the person who wrote the article linked there just sort of interpreted that way, remember what we know of the story this year versus last year:

2015
>Toa get summoned
>Toa find golden masks
>Toa get to city entrance and beat up LoSS
>Toa go into city and beat up skeletons
>Toa wake up Ekimu and beat the big bad skeleton
2016 (from what we've seen)
>Toa get upgraded and go find the elemental creatures
>Creatures tell them they hid the mask of control in a labyrinth on an island
>Toa go there and find Umarak, a being as ancient as the creatures who wants to hunt them
>Umarak gets mask of control and eventually puts it on
>Umarak turns into some sort of huge monster

Even without all the information I would hardly call the 2016 story 'simpler' than the 2015, more straightforward perhaps.

What is a good piece of information is that now we know for a fact that the series is four 22 minute long episodes
>>
>>5431040
What all parts are you still missing there? I don't see the blue and red +oo+ pieces, nor the white technic axles and half axle half pin pieces, nor the ribbed hose piece or the round piece the eyes go on, is there a reason you are having difficulty parting these together?
>>

>>
>>5431049
>is there a reason you are having difficulty parting these together?
Simple. I just went to biggest store on the country and got everything I could scrape together. But as of now, the project is on hold before I get some more money. Other stuff I'm missing is more or less the hinge-pieces on the legs, some Technic bits and bobs, Pahrak-shields from the feet, antennae for the both, every single gear, every hose (some of those are surprisingly rare), one red Bohrok half and the white Technic parts for the teeth. Again, not so common.

And yes, I am ready to order internationally.

I just want good 2016 pictures ASAP to stop some of the shitposting. I personally like all the beasts and feel like all the disappointment in the 2016 summer sets stems from Umarak, who we were looking forward to the most. If the actual model for Umarak proves to look really good and the iffy-looking prelim was simply a matter of poor posing or CGI errors, then I feel like people will warm up to the summer sets pretty fast.

Never would've I thought that I would be glad that only Creatures come with Shadow Traps.

>>
>>5431142
see I really don't get the hate on the beasts, it's not like the skeletons where exposed ball joints on both the torso (which was a terrible inexcusable flaw that plagued all the 2015 sets but whatever) and on the limbs, and then there was scorpio who was just a weird set.

The beasts have consistent color schemes (a splash of trans-neon green here or there but its not as jarring as the trans-orange on the skull villains), cool head designs, and varied and cool silhouettes, Lava beast looks like some kind of imp or demon with his short legs but scary looking head, Quake beast looks intimidating with his bulky frame and especially bulky crystal arm, and Storm beast has an awesome lean look with terrifying looking claws. The shadow traps sticking out of them in places also gives them a strange, very evil feel.

If he used the vanilla gearbox both arms would swing in oppositie directions, he wanted them to swing in the same direction like the was doing a sledgehammer.
>>
>>5431273

>>
>>5431043
This. There's 0% chance of the story being simpler seeing as the animations added up to 30mins. While JtO is 88mins total. And the fact that we know we have another graphic novel and two more books coming.

I can understand why kids got confused since 2015 was a clusterfuck in terms of media.
>>
>>5430834
The halfassedness of 2015's story material really fucked it over. I don't think Genwunners would be complaining about the story so much if the animations showed, or described this.

Subjective.

Ikir's cool but the open ball joints are kind of obnoxious on him and there isnt a whole lot of ways you can pose him.

Uxar's really cool and has a very sleek design, but his wingtips are hard to keep organized since they are connected by blue pins, and his wingspan is so huge its hard to fit on a shelf.

Terak is cool looking and has neat colors but his function is really lame

Melum is basically a worse-looking Terak but with a much better function

Akida is a really cool creature who feels way larger and more substantial than all the others despite being considerably smaller in terms of surface area than Uxar, the guns are kind of weird and there isnt a WHOLE lot of ways you can pose a fish, but the set is really good

Ketar is a mess, but has a certain sort of underdog charm to him

+ masks made with the new mold stay on heads without assistance
+ when heated, the mold produces masks with crisper detail than masks cured at room temp
+ I made sure to brush all the little debris off this time when making the mold, so detail is perfect

- the working time of the solid resin that I have causes it to begin to solidify before I can finish pouring
(maybe this can be solved by mixing equal concentrations of it and the transparent resin - result would still be fully opaque, but maybe take longer to solidify)
- Regardless of whether or not I'm fully covered and wearing a breathing mask, it seems I can't avoid getting some kind of allergic skin reaction when working with this stuff, but I have proper stuff to treat it

I've got a setup where fans blow the fumes into the ventilation system in my bathroom, which seems to be working alright... I haven't been having issues like before now that I'm fully protected, but maybe I should lay off until the current rashes (leftovers from before that are nearly diminished) clear. I have noticed that being near fumes when they are uncovered makes them tingle...

Damn weather doesn't let me do this outside... the cold doesn't help the curing at all. Though maybe that would increase the cure time so I could get the mask filled... no wind though...

>>
>>5431718
Everyone basically shitposts when it comes to Bionicle, nobody except kids and fans care about it because there isnt any way to treat it as "muh mature hobby im totally like an engineer" as with normal lego system.

Basically this guy is full of shit though he is pretty much correct about certain things, like the spiky armor piece. The trans-light blue thing has got to be a load of shit since its clearly trans-neon green or something similar , and there is really no way he could compare UtD to UtH considering how very fundamentally different they are.

So basically he must have just glanced at it and been like "eh its like this I guess'
>>
>>5431929
>Everyone basically shitposts when it comes to Bionicle, nobody except kids and fans care about it because there isnt any way to treat it as "muh mature hobby im totally like an engineer" as with normal lego system.
I never understood this. Why is shit like Transformers okay but Bionicle is bad? Is it everyone or just AFOLs and if so, does that make AFOLs the gamers of Toys?
>>
>>5431866
That's because most of them are either pretty young teens who got into Bionicle in 06, or manchildren who don't necessarily understand how adults, even in the lego community, view Bionicle.

I mean we're autistic manchildren here, but I would like to think most of us are jaded enough on everything to trust our own impressions over someone who clearly doesnt give a shit about bionicle and makes astronomical assumptions like "my friend barry said something about they were simplifying the story or something so thats why these sets lack innovation" rather than someone who is actually knowledgeable about the matter being "they were likely referring to this generation versus G1 since that has been a statement they made at NYCC and this year shows absolutely no signs of lower story complexity than last year considering the introduction of more names on sets, as well as a more interesting backstory on the villain, these sets look similar to the other ones because it is using the same building system and basic aesthetic, the bestial limbs and heads are what indicate these characters as monsters rather than the hero characters."
>>
>>5431940
Transformers has a LOT more brand recognition, though collecting them is still kind of looked down upon by most adults, people can sort of get it.

Bionicle has less brand-name recognition and automatically loses some points for being basically a spin-off of Lego, and considering it doesnt use the same building system and the AFOLs hate on it so much since it reinforces the unimaginable idea that lego is a toy for children, it is easy for one to dismiss it as some cheap garbage thrown together that nobody really cares about.
>>
>>5431945
Bionicle is literally 15 years old though, surely views on it would've changed as nostalgia set in?

Yeah, so AFOLs are basically the gamers of toys, thanks for confirming that. I can't help but wonder how they felt about the fact Brick By Brick implied that Bionicle was actually important.
>>
I must be the only one that likes Bionicle and dismisses everything else related to Lego.
It's not like I hate the rest, but I simply do not care.
>>
>>5431968

>>
>>5431968
I buy a system set once in a while just for variety, but I've never really found any of them particularly interesting. And despite the objectively worse price-per-piece, constraction sets feel way more worth their money just from the rough size of the final product.

Personally I would just like to see large fantasy or sci-fi themes that rely more on the design of the sets and a gear function or two to automate some things rather than sticking wheels, stud shooters, and flick flier missiles over a couple stacked lego plates, throwing on some detachable garbage vehicles, and just having the whole thing be a big mess like lego has been doing with Ninjago, Chima, and Nexo Knights.

To be fair I have no idea what color it is in. looks like pure gunmetal, pure black, or maybe gunmetal mixed with trans orange, it could be preliminary though, as blended parts dont really show up until much after prelims (protector masks in winter 2015, drained golden masks in summer 2015), and the part that is blended on the mask isnt blended here, and I doubt they would change around the molding process considering the relative complexity of the Umarak mask mold with the edges of the two colors being clearly defined and consistent.

Personally I wouldn't mind bionicle getting a break in favour of a new constraction theme, especially one managed by someone who will tap into it's full potential rather than pussyfoot and follow LEGO traditions such as the enemies being creepy crawlies (specifically spiders, scorpions and snakes), play function gimmicks, and underground/underwater/jungle year where the entire team gears up specifically for it.

The single most important thing that LEGO blantantly refuses to address is their age group. The constraction lines are aimed at teens. Teens play games with violence, swear, crave sex, prize alphaness and have the potential to grasp complex concepts. You can't just print a 12-17 on a Thomas the Engine box and expect highschoolers to buy it.

Now, I'm not saying that LEGO should make a Duke Nukem line (though I'd shower them with money if they did). They just need more complex-looking sets (piece appearance and colour distribution), better music (music that the average person could casually listen to even without knowing where it's from) and more adult imagery.

Course when I say adult imagery I don't mean strip clubs, concentration camps and onscreen killings. I mean better posing, a palette that doesn't exclude dark or vibrant colours, and more detailed environments that can set the mood for what takes place in them. And of course a more serious character/set design like in the skull squad concept art.
>>
>>5432444
I really wish lego would branch out from everything being fucking vehicles nowadays, I know its all that sells, but considering how uncommon the structure-type sets are nowdays, when thats fundamentally what lego is best at creating, its kind of frustrating

>>5432450
Lego would never make something quite that edgy, remember they still have their whole pseudo-non-violence thing, and constraction is AIMED at younger kids, but I feel like they should change things around a bit yeah.

Bionicle as a theme is honestly pretty great in my opinion, contraction works best for robotic-looking / armored things, and bad for standard humans, as the star wars CCBS line has proved, Bionicle on it's own has plenty of potential for complexity and what have you, as G1 proved (though it kinda went overboard at the very end), a refocus on contraction to be aimed at all ages by being aimed at an older audience (younger kids will always think that whatever the teenager thinks is cool must be super cool), and not being afraid to go for some more complicated storytelling.

Half the people who owned G1 bionicles couldnt give a damn about the story, they knew that you had these good guys with elemental powers that looked cool, and you had these bad guys who also looked cool, thats all they needed to know, the story content is needed to keep people interested who want more from their figures so that they will continue to be invested in the line. I still think G2 has potential, it just needs better story presentation, which HOPEFULLY JtO will give us (though I've watched other lego series like the new nexo knights one, it's pretty cringeworthy, far more than even the 2015 animations), the problem is that unless the line gets greenlit for more years, it might be too little too late.

IMHO the biggest problem with Bionicle right now is the designs are getting more mature and complex, but the story is becoming more childish and simple. You can tell the designers want a really serious and mature universe but the writers want it to be as muted and "child friendly" as possible.

To be fair, last years Toa designs were pretty childish / 'toyish' looking, and while the skeletons fixed that, their whole spooky skeleton thing felt a bit too cliche and silly to be intimidating.

The cool, complex looking characters and designs are coming forth this year, and we havent got any story material for this year yet.
