>>
>>5372425
You're after what, MOCing (making custom stuff)? Generally its a good idea to get a few sets at first to give yourself a starting point, and then order individual parts you want via bricklink. Sadly there isnt much of a way to easily buy the parts in bulk so bricklink is the best option there is.
>>
>>5372418
Thanks, they're from the Lego dimensions portal.
Can't wait to post a more flattering and complete pic of the moc. Colours look nice together.

>>5372425
I would say but a bunch of sets and disassemble them. Can get a wide range of pieces that way.
Unfortunately a lot of pieces no longer run frequent in sets or have been retired completely.
Try to buy a shitload of used pieces on Craigslist, goodwill or a yardsale.

If you need a specific part or parts you can use Bricklink and get it used for cheap.

(dont have camera here with me so excuse the shitty LDD mock-up)

I basically just moved the tail back by replacing the blue pin on the ball piece on the back of his torso with a grey 3 long axle (though one of those pieces that is 2m of axle with a pin at the end (featured on LoSS and Kulta works better) and replaced the tail with a gear to operate the mechanism, this was all pretty subjective stuff really. I found it made the torso not feel quite as tall and just more well balanced to me. Though the arms don't hold their positions as well without the tail resisting their movement.

Shield gun is kinda strange but at least he feels a lot more like G1 kopaka in terms of build and weapon.

also what is it with the new year that brings in all the shitposters?
>>
So the general consensus is

Lewa - Best
Onua
Tahu
Gali
Kopaka
Pohatu - Worst

Right?
>>
>>5373250
>opinions
Gali a shit. I think they're all pretty good though, especially with some small modifications here and there. And IMHO how good they are also depends on whether or not they're united. For example Tahu is bottom tier alone but god tier with his creature.
>>
>>5373250
Generally, I mean it varies a bit, for me it goes something along the lines of:

Tahu > Lewa > Kopaka > Pohatu > Onua > Gali

But yours seems to be the general consensus of the fanbase with one or two swapped around. I feel like the Toa this year are a lot more sensitive to the tastes of the individual then last years, these are just overall more polarizing I guess. Umarak is better then every other G2 set though.
>>
>>5373248
Dark blue arms and only having gold on the thighs really limits the appeal.

Luckily if you're smart and didn't skip Hero Factory, or at least are willing to sacrifice 2015 Kopaka, you'll have the same shells in white.

As for the thighs, maybe Gali's Crystal piece would fit better.

I don't moc too often but heres some goblin guy I made, needs a name.
>>
>>5373260
2016 Kopaka is pretty easy to fix I find. Just swap out his gold thigh armor for Gali's silver (Gali needs a full rework to look good anyway, so you might not even need these parts if you dont plan on buying extra) and swap his arms for his 2015 thighs, which have a better color and strangely well-fitting stickers.

You could also just leave him with his golden mask on all the time or try to squeeze in some bits of gold onto his upper body if you really dont want to swap out the thigh armor (though completely removing it is also an option).
>>
>>5373258
>Umarak is better then every other G2 set though.
Definitely. I'm hyped for his summer upgrade.

>>5373263
>needs a name
Yogurt.
>>
>>5373258
Yeah you could say a lot about the 2015 Toa's design, but you can't argue that they look clean, good, and unified.

Sure, stuff like Pohatu's automail arm, Lewa's gangly proportions, and Onua's massive girth may have not been to everyone's taste, but they looked damn good.
>>
>>5373267
My overall opinion is that the 2015 Toa feel more polished, but I like the 2016 ones more, kind of hard to explain why for me though.

2015 and 2016 are fixing it.
>>
>>5373296
Honestly my only real complaint with 2015 in hindsight is that the release dates of all the books werent sooner, I feel like we could have used "Revenge of the Skull Spiders" and the "Gathering of the Toa" graphic novel a lot earlier since the former gives us a good amount of lore, worldbuilding, and new characters, while the latter gives us a look visually at various parts / aspects of Okoto that were underdeveloped in the animations.
>>
>>5373284
Lewa is... Just different in his Uniter form. I personally miss the keetorange, but Uniter still looks finished.

I really want to like Uniter Gali. I love the use of orange, and Trans light blue bones with orange shells then silver addons looks sooo good, but she needs a lot of work to stand next to Master Gali.

Pohatu just needs a bit of burnt orange shells added back in and he does fine, possibly including the body shell with the 2015 version.

As long as Onua's shoulders aren't too spiky he looks good, though going back to his previous feet may be better.

Tahu has been shown to need a bit of red added back in to look his best. As for the azure details I don't know, but in pictures they somehow work.
>>
>>5373299
This really. It's good to see 2015 isn't going to be the norm for G2 since we're getting a graphic nivel early this year and hopefully JtO will be better than the animations, I'm really digging the art style.
>>
I'm really impressed overall with how 2016 so vehemently address the general concerns / criticisms the majority seemed to have with 2015. Fans complained they looked too textured / too "Hero Factory", Lego dumps a bunch of new and old pieces on us that are unmistakably "Bionicle", fans say the masks pop off too easy, they improve that as well. Hard to say if this is in the same vein or not, but it also feels like Umarak's $20 price point and substantial figure is an improvement made over the rather unsubstantial LoSS.

Say what you will about the 2016 sets, but it's really nice to see how the set designers have listened to fan feedback. I just hope that sales don't let them down.
>>

When I was picking up my onua today, there were three lil kids huddles around the few new sets my store had, a look of awe on their faces. Their mom came by and bought them tahu, onua and Umarak after they begged her for a minute or two

I don't really like to rank them, but here's my first impressions of Pohatu and Umarak, who I own, and Kopaka, Onua, and Gali, who my friends own:
Pohatu: Decent ununited, United his Karate chop arms are kind of silly but he definitely looks better in real life. Looks really good if you spread the spikes out like wings. Pohatu is also VASTLY improved if you separate his weapon into a throwing spear and a mace. Overall he's my favorite for play, but loses some points as far as aesthetics go.
Onua: Despite the complaints, still pretty stronk and pretty wide. A bit unwieldy in his United form but very good. I dig the wide shoulders. Very good looking, good for play.
Umarak: Still a must-have. Looks better with trap pauldrons single, but they become unwieldy when he's united. Looks REALLY scrawny without them if he isn't united though. Lots of features and value, good for play and VERY good for display, and even comes with a bonus trap piece. Kopaka, eat your heart out.
Gali: My least favorite overall, and pretty bad ununited. HIGHLY recommend replacing the axle and pin connector attaching her orange armor bit with one of the hinge parts (like the ones in the middle of the traps) for articulation. Her weapon is garbage. The function is weird and doesn't work unless you hold it in place, and the swinging chain just doesn't deliver, especially compared to Pohatu's boulder of death. United she's a bit better but honestly she's much better as a display piece than a toy.
Kopaka: Surprisingly, much better than I was expecting. Still pretty low tier on his own but looks really good United. He would have looked better the the gold sword he had in the prototype leaks. My main complaint with him is I feel like the developers made a 15 dollar set but realized he was supposed to be a 20 dollar set and just slapped two gold parts on him. Weapons aren't anything special but they look good. Better than Gali, but still much better for play than display.

The Netflix series might help spread awareness of the theme too. They are growing in popularity, after all.
>>
>>5373316
They've done an excellent job this year, I think. Last year was okay, but this year absolutely SCREAMS Bionicle. Tons of improvements all around, although I feel like a good half of the toa were designed around their united forms and suffered for it. I look forward to seeing what Summer holds.

Are they really selling poorly? They've been in decent demand in the local stores in my area, and after Christmas all that was left in the local walmart were a couple galis, some protectors, and a single skull scorpio, and at the Lego Store I saw a couple people buying the new sets and one guy even bought his kid every single one of them.
>>
>>5373316
The new chestpiece looks like a clusterfuck

Their color schemes are all over the place

They have really short limbs and really long torsos

The new Unite piece and the Crystal shell addons are cool though
>>
>>5373331
>Overall he's my favorite for play, but loses some points as far as aesthetics go.
This comment seems oddly deja-vu when on the topic of G2 Pohatu sets.

>My main complaint with him is I feel like the developers made a 15 dollar set but realized he was supposed to be a 20 dollar set and just slapped two gold parts on him.

I feel like they had a bit of an odd case with budget here honestly, I feel like what we have is a set that is slightly more substantial than a 15 dollar set and less substantial then a 20 dollar set, packaged with a creature that is less substantial than the others (sacrificing his complexity to buff out Kopaka a bit) so that Kopaka can still look like one of the meatier Toa, but they can sell Umarak as a $20 dollar set and still have the exact same price for the entire wave as they did last year.
>>
>>5373294
I still don't get why they didn't make the crystal parts trans purple instead of trans clear
>>
>>5373336
Honestly it is hard to tell with sales, since it seems to vary WILDLY from region to region. In North America they seem to be doing decently enough, Sold like hotcakes for the first month or so due to nostalgic fans, but tapered off quite a bit later on to still sell, though less popular than lego system sets by quite a margin. We really don't have the data to say for sure one way or the other though.
>>
>>5373343
Moccing probably
>>
>>5373343
My thought is either:
A. To give fans a neutral-colored piece to MOC with
B. Trans-purple is somehow an odd color material-wise to work with and this was better for durability.
>>
>>5373339
I absolutely cannot understand what went wrong with Kopaka unless they were trying to rob people blind, which seems almost out of character.
If they'd just added a shadow trap and given Kopaka some better weapons, the set could have potentially been AMAZING, and probably would have sold a ton better. The shadow traps on the box only have 11 parts (two trap halves, four legs, two parts for the hinge, two pins, one eye) and I'm sure they could have found room to give Kopaka some action features beyond a six shooter. Hell, if the six shooter was removed altogether, that would free up a TON of parts, including the parts on his leg, and give plenty of wiggle room for something better. It absolutely baffles me how thoroughly they managed to drop the ball with him.
>>
>>5373343
Lego seems surprisingly phobic about trans-purple colors. It's a really strange design choice that I feel would have been more appropriate for, say, Kopaka, and they could have saved blue-gold crystal armor for Toa Ekimu, giving us a whole extra color of the parts to build with.
>>
>>5373337
Oh yeah, I also like the waist articulation even if the function makes it look like they're all walking around with buttplugs
>>
>>5373316
Lego needs to pump more effort and funding and advertising into Bionicle. I mean, it's the brand that pulled Lego out of a nosedive that, had it continued, would've ended Lego as a whole. It lasted several 'Waves' longer than most themes ever last, all due to the love from the fans.

Ninjago is a poor man's Bionicle,

Lego needs to appeal to their actual fanbase- autistic teenager NEETs. Kids 8-14 don't play with toys anymore- they just watch shitty minecraft retards and text. You gotta go for the obsessive late teens- young adults who have the money. Mask packs would've sold like hot cakes, and you don't even need new molds at this point. Solid color and recolor versions of the Protector and Uniter masks. A full set of each Master mask in each of 6 colors plus gold, silver, and gunmetal. Skull Spiders in weird colors like dark red and orange. People would be eating those up like candy.
>>
>>5373351
As I said, it was probably some budget shit in order to let Umarak be what he is. Personally I feel like stud-shooters dont contribute to the price of sets much since its the volume of plastic that effects the price moreso than the amount of parts (as if one just looked at parts, the price per part ratio on Umarak and Akida looks like an absolute steal).

As it stands, you are hardly getting robbed by buying Kopaka and Melum, the set costs the same as a 15 dollar and 10 dollar set, except you have to buy both at the same time rather than separately (which doesn't matter at all for a collector). Hell in my country (Canada), you actually save a bit of money for that arrangement.

Piece wise he is tied with Umarak but features a lot more large pieces compared to Umarak's many smaller technic pieces. The weapons are kinda subjective and I like the sword a LOT more than his spear last year, but find the shooter shield less imposing than his old one.

I guess subjectively you really hate the set, though have to say it feels like the opinion on him is pretty mixed and not negative across the board (my only true complaint is the misplaced gold).

>>5373366
Lego is a bigger deal now than when Bionicle first came out, and it really just doesn't completely fit their modern brand image, so Nexo Knights gets to have advertising that puts certain video games to shame.

I really like Umarak. There's some very clever integration of the trap into his body, and it seems like the build took a lot of cues from powered up Skull Grinder, which is great because I always felt like he was the set the build team WANTED to produce, but the part count combined with him being boxed with Ekimu would have just made it way too impractical. I hope Umarak the Destroyer is just as good, because the Hunter has raised the bar RIDICULOUSLY high. My biggest worry is if he's meant to combine with the beasts I fear his solo design may be thrown under the bus for the gimmick, like many of the Toa. Overall, I'd say he's the best Bionicle set we've seen yet.

>>
Saw all the sets at Toys R Us yesterday, the Lego Store didn't put any 2016 sets out ahead of release though. I gotta say, I don't really care for the new wave. Apart from Onua and Umarak, which both look fucking awesome, they seem to all be really thin and lanky and look awkward. And Gali (my favorite from the last wave) just looks like shit with the asymmetry and her terrible weapon. Maybe I can mod her in a way that I'll be satisfied with but I don't care for her set at all in its stock form.

Ugh. In other news, Target has some of the 2015 sets on clearance now. Picked up Skull Basher for $10.

If you look into the comments under some guy named "The Gray Kirby" Callan says the following and I quote "The new armor shell is awesome, the masks aren't as bad as pictured though the silver still annoys me, and some of the trans armor pieces are neat(trans purple studs look great). The new chest armor is not that great, but the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IS THE NEW TORSO. The gimmick is awesome, but it's just a tad too long and it throws the whole figure off for me."
Tisk tisk tisk, even when he gets his way, he's still disappointed...

The most annoying thing is that he asked specifically for a new torso that was to separate parts to have a for of waist articulation and then when he got that he whines that it's not short enough. I feel like the Unity Piece and the torso armor were designed by two different people (they almost definitely were). One evokes the G1 aesthetic successfully while the other has fucking nine million pistons and nothing else. Like "muh pistons" are the only thing that separate Bionicle and HF.

Same story at B&N, where two kids (high schoolers by the look of them) were sheepishly checking out the sets. We talked about how cool the new sets were and how great it was to see them on the shelf at last (and they said they had checked the local TRU and found them there, too). They grabbed the last Onua and a Pohatu, I picked up an Umarak.

Umarak is good shit. I love everything about him except his ankles being a little limited in motion, he feels like a smaller Witch Doctor to me, in terms of iconic looks. His colors manage not to look like a clusterfuck, and my gf keeps calling him Wendigo and reposing him to look like he's stalking something.

I can't wait to pick up some more sets for 2016. Gradually this time. I grabbed all of 2015's winter wave at once, and the excitement drained a little too quickly. Not making that mistake again.

A bit off topic but I don't know why From Software don't license some of their characters from Dark Souls and Bloodborne (though that would require Sony) out to figure companies, they do it with Armored Core and Dark Souls has far surpassed that in terms of sales and popularity for them. I think the budget for new parts is pretty limited for contraction because it is such a niche theme, even moreso for Bionicle since it doesn't have the popular license that star wars does. Last year wave one we got one single new armor piece and four new weapon pieces. This time around we get one new weapon piece and three new armor pieces + one returning one. But also a few additional new parts compared to last year if one considers the torso construction and the villain this go around having a mask. It's likely that they just didn't have the ability to create a bunch of new weapon molds for this year and do what they wanted with the armor pieces, so they just tried to use the same piece in different ways, since if they reused last year's weapons that figure might seem like not as big of a deal to some people.

Honestly I feel like while I would have rather had a bunch of new weapon molds, their reuse of this part works out fairly well with Kopaka, Tahu, and Lewa who use it in decent enough ways for it to feel okay, but Gali and Pohatu's use of it is what really makes the weapons feel like this this time around, because they use it in exactly the same way, but then cover it with useless bling, making the reuse of one pieces as weapons across the line seem even worse. I feel like if they had given Pohatu a flail exclusively instead of a spear with flail keychain, and if they had reworked Gali's spear to look a little more unique, then the reuse of the single part would seem a lot less awful.

Also, just came back from buying the entire Uniter series (they're out in German Lego-shops Deutsch-bros), finished building Ketar and Pohatu and tried a bunch of minor but important modifications:

1) switch the forearm and thigh shells - makes the color-flow look better
2) put the ankle friction extenders on the knees
- makes the legs look less shit
3) DON'T FUCKING PUT KETAR'S LEGS LIKE IN THE INSTRUCTIONS, JESUS CHRIST! - instead, move them so they look like some animu shoulder and skirt armor and imagine the crystal-swords are shoulder-mounted cannons

This. Give in to it, there are some tasty parts out there just waiting for you
>>
>>5375023
You don't have a good enough variety of pieces. Do what >>5375029 said and also bricklink.com some parts.

do you recommend I buy sets or just parts? I don't know where to begin, I was just going to keep buying some of the new Bionicle stuff.
>>
>>5375068
I've heard it's better to buy parts rather than sets on Bricklink from several people.
>>
>>5374443
Pohatu was probably my least favourite until I saw this. Well done.
>>
Have they released the Protector masks in singular colors?
>>
>>5375127
Nope, and have my doubts they ever will, which is a shame, means we can't MOC Bingzak, Harvali, or any other villagers without having to use a canonically inappropriate mask.

If you do end up getting some Hero Factory sets, here's what I recommend:

You have to at least get one 2.0 or 3.0 hero, just to see how much better the designers are today.

Most of breakout was pretty solid.

Invasion from Below is good to get from if just because it had access to all the pieces the first Bionicle wave didn't introduce, so stuff like the 3 long liftarm with the ball joint, the beast feet, the friction extenders, and other pieces. Evo XL in particular is worth it just for the fun build and plethora of parts.
>>
>>5375068
Buying individual parts is only really worthwile for G1 bionicle parts. CCBS tends to be a bit pricier, so you may be better off getting some hero factory sets.

where would an ausfag buy hero factory sets without paying the same in shipping as the item itself?
>>
>>5375394
Theres a lot of second hand stuff on gumtree IIRC, or even ebay probably.

This MoC is fabulous. Wish the actual sets were as color consistent and aesthetically pleasing as this guy.

Hey, remade the six 2016 Toa only using pieces from the reboot waves with their respective colors, Gali needs to be redone I think.

Only Kopaka and Onua look good.
The others seem like part clusterfucks, lots of cool ideas that interfered with each other. This is really apparent on Pohtu and Tahu. Lewa is almost good, but the yellow looks really awkward.

You're trying to merge the two waves, which I appreciate; I'm gonna have a go at it myself when my S@H order arrives. But I think using the old wave pieces to refine the Uniters by filling in their gaps (like Uniter Tahu's upper leg issue) is going to be a more successful endeavor than slapping the two sets together and hoping for the best.

I'd really double down on color scheme unification and keeping their defining characteristics to one or two things. Like on Pohatu, you're going for the feet thing, but those looks like massive claws rather than kicking guards like G1 pohatu.

>Pohatu, the shortest Toa, becomes the tallest Toa
I like this.
>>
>>5375530
okay you convinced me to get the new wave
>>
>>5375553
yes, I have to admit besides Onua and Kopaka the rest are kinda (really) cluttered. Although Kopaka, Onua, and Lewa were my favorites to build.
>>
>>5375577
And hey, that's alright. At least you know that when you're having more fun, it's because you're getting better results. I love Onua's gangliness and squating legs that result from so much bulk. Kopaka looks like a great unification of old and new design. Going over them again, I actually do like what you've done with Tahu mostly, but something about the legs looks off. I can't say what precisely though.
>>
>>5375530
aside from some of those limbs being really odd, I like these

goes to show how much better they look with a torso part that isn't too long or one huge part

So /biog/ I bought the first order stormtrooper today and now I'm hesitating to build it because I'm afraid of what the back will look like, is Phasma worth the 5 extra dollars for the cape and more color?

Here's my attempt at an older, less athletic Lewa. I'm still pretty new at this, but I think it turned out alright.
