Why is starting a collection so fucking bad? I don't even know how to display my figures.

It's not, just get a few high quality ones and don't be shit with their poses. Helps to color co-ordinate them too.

I feel like once you get a certain amount of stuff it just kinda puts itself together.

Except if you collect transformers.
It will always be a clusterfuck collection.

Probably.
I had the same problem over the summer when I started. It'll slowly make itself look better. It's just the empty space detracting from it all. I bought some cheaper stuff to help fill it too, my thrift store has a lil' 10ยข bin of nostalgia.

Because it takes most people far too long to make the realization that 9/10 of all western companies aren't worth buying from.
I have a pretty small collection that's an eclectic mix of things.
It'd look like a kid's bedroom were I to just set them up on my dresser, but in a Detolf with some lights wired in along with my comics it turned oiut pretty nice; my TAS Batman and Harley figures naturally found themselves in front of my Batman comics section, my Major figma compliments my copy of TGitS, and so on. It just sorta worked out. Only problem is my Detolf filled up fast and I'm going to need to think about either getting another or looking at other options.
I don't like crowding stuff together myself, would rather give everything lots of room.

A nice glass cabinet with some risers and good lighting will make anything look good. Fill empty space with other knickknacks or even books from around your household.
