A while back, /toy/ led me to a webcomic about a guy who started buying up Episode I toys and ended up becoming a toy dealer at conventions. Can't remember the name for the life of me - you guys remember? Thanks!

The only toy-related webcomic I can think of is shortpackwd

"Shortpacked".

What is going on between the girl and guy in the back with their arms crossed???

staring contest, if he wins she has to lower her standards to date him. if she wins.. well it ends up in some form of humiliation that he's probably used to.
Kind of like a lottery ticket that you can get a refund on if you don't win.
I miss the 00's

Thanks but no - this wasn't an ongoing, punchline-style comic, more of a web graphic novel. Like, it told one single story over the course of many installments, and wasn't humor-based.

I know exactly what comic you're talking about OP. Here it is:

Anybody reading this blind, be advised this comic hits you right in the toy feels. Not as hard as Rusty Brown, but a bit more authentic.

I just feel glad that this comic talks me out of "toys=investment". I'm happy just buying what i want, and later knowing theyre worth something.

speaking of Rusty brown, i wish i could find more of that. they storytimed it on /aco/ for a while, but it was mostly the rest of ANL

>This incident was actually based on a comic book store owner I had known. After the bust of the comics, he sold off his store and moved to Israel. Rumor was, he had left a lot of unpaid bills behind.

This is hilarious; basically a Jew was responsible for destroying a bunch of people's livelihoods by intentionally flooding the market. A microcosm of real life.

Doom was a shrewd motherfucker.
>>
I just binge read the whole thing. There were times that I got mad at the main character, specifically when their wives showed a genuine enthusiasm to join them in the hobby and they made sure to make it the most miserable experience of their life. Ffff.
>>
Good grief are you supposed to sympathize with the main character? Is he supposed to be relatable? the whole thing feels pretty pathetic

Reading Dealers now, do people actually do this? I've heard of people flipping toys but this is pretty intense and competitive.

Always.
>>
>>5365296

at the time, yes; there was no solid collector's alternative, internet was sparse and not as regulated and standardized. You could go for weeks or months without seeing a specific figure in toy shelves. There really wasn't a centralized standard for collector figures, either(like how in the story, Marvel shifters, which would now be regarded as a lame gimmick, is shown as a big deal), no one was sure what the next big thing would be. There were no Hot Toys, no Black Series, No SHF.The internet has changed that market considerably, although to an extent you still see some retail toys being flipped for considerable money.
>>
>>5365287
>Why is it always the Jews?
Because when it's not, it doesn't get discussed and remembered.

Thanks, anon. I enjoyed that. Is there anything else like it? A novel maybe?

Also, did TPM really crash the toy market in the early 2000s? Is there anywhere where toy shows are still a thing besides comic con?

Maybe in the 90s, but since 1999-2001, it really hasn't changed much.

>>5367101
> did TPM really crash the toy market in the early 2000s?
No. It only fucked over speculators and who gives a shit about them.
The toy industry was really ramping up during this time. McFarlane was increasing articulation, adding more detail, and buying up licenses left and right. Companies like Palisades, Mezco, NECA, Kaiyodo, ArtFX and many others were stepping up with their own lines.
Dolls were entering premium territory. High quality clothes, replicas and other amazing shit we never saw before.
Diecast replicas companies were upping their game as well.
Tons of stores started to sell collectibles and we started seeing hipstershit toys popping up during this time.

So the early 00s was a very hype time.

Mid-late 00s was when we saw a crash, and that was thanks to Chinese workers getting rights and companies like KB and Sam Goodys going bust.
>>
>>5367145

I remember walking into Media Play as a teen.

Like a whole corner of the store that was just floor-to-ceiling Kaiyodo Trigun and Eva toys, ARTFX Guardian Force figures, Front Mission, Armored Core, Berserk, Gundam, shit I hadn't even seen before, and for cheap prices. I got a Wolfwood figure for like $12 and was hooked on Japanese toys forever.

Yep, it was great back then.
They actually gave a shit about what the west liked and pandered to us. Only line that does that today is the SHF DBZ stuff. Almost everything else is for eastern tastes only.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias#Persistence_of_discredited_beliefs

That's also covered. When confronted with factual evidence that runs counter to your held beliefs, your brain goes into lockdown mode and your incorrect belief is actually strengthened. The tests with people's political beliefs being challenged while in an MRI are pretty interesting.

Evolutionary adaptation is a hell of a drug.
>>

wtf mall still had a suncoast when man of steel was out?
>>
That was one hell of a read. The best part was when the guys go to the premiere of Phantom, although that got me thinking. Was it THAT poorly received back in the day? Or is it just a case of the writers being hyperbolic to help the narrative? It's pretty clear the strip is no documentary, in an early page they mention Mace Windu figures before he even existed as a character
>>
>>5369941
I remember really liking Phantom when I first saw it. I was 13 though. I will give TPM credit though for giving us Episode 1 Pod Racer on N64.
>>
>>5369638
/pol/-smokers are as bad as SJWs in many ways, including never letting go of their narrative, or pushing a clearly fake narrative.

"big titties on fictional characters is RAPE!"
"Gamergate is totally about gaming journalism ethics, duh what is a jifgirstmin?"
>>
>>5369941
Mace Windu was one of the first Phantom Menace toys. He was a mail-Away exlusive preview figure.

>>
>Late 90s/early 2000s
>Walk in, first stop was Software Etc. Before the Jews at Gamestop bought them and turned them to shit.
>Hit up the Arcade, usually run into some friends there, spend like $10 playing MK, SF, SHUMPs, and making sure my high score is still there at the sit-down Ms. PAC-MAN machine.
>Next stop was Music land and Sam Goody, to browse CDs and DVDs, and collectible toys for an hour.
>Hit up Waldenbooks to buy a couple volumes of Manga
>Last Stop is KB Toys, slightly overpriced, but awesome selection, much like TRU of the 90's.

>Now, almost all those stores are closed.
>Malls lie half abandoned, with many stores as abandoned lots.
>Stores come and go when they set up shop in a mall. Some last a couple months, maybe a year at most.
>Malls are always totally empty.

I love the internet, but I also hate it. Going to shop at a physical store just feels like a quaint Novelty.

Jeff Gerstmann- the former Gamespot reviewer who was fired because he gave a bad review to a game that the publisher paid Gamespot big bucks to hype up. The average GGer barely knows who he is, because the movement started over some unimportant woman who made a forgettable indie game dumping her whiny boyfriend.

Seriously, if GG had started the day he was fired AND told the white supremacists to piss off, the movement may have had merit. They did neither, so real gamers hate GG.

Here's a TLDR of this comic

>500 fucking pages long
>Reads like a sonichu comic
>Piece of shit scalper that has a perfect life before his autism magically kicks in at age 30
>Talks shit about his customers and friends
>Bought beanie babies to resell because he was such a fucking autist
>Acquired many shekels
>>
>>5370224
It's only 124 pages and I don't think other scalpers a.k.a the competence can be considered as friends.
>>
>>5370051
I used to love going to outlets. all they had was a KB toys, but those were the really good ones with their rare items and clearance stuff the regular ones didnt have
>>
>>5370051
I still prefer going to stores before I order offline, just because I hate waiting for shipping. But half the time stores have such shit stock they don't carry the damn thing I'm looking for and I'm forced to order online anyway.

I don't really ever pick up anything when I go because of the prices but I know they've got some Marvel stuff and a bunch of NECA. Pretty huge anime selection (well, by today's standards) but it's all like $20 more than you'd pay on Amazon, so I never get anything. There's also anime t-shirts and plushes if you're into that sort of thing.
