From what I understand, Megalon had a special commentary track with Ed Godzeiwasiaskhfdihdig and some other dude that Media Blasters accidentally(?) distributed, and DAM blu-rays have something special about them that Toho never actually approved.

The idea behind the '54 design was that is was a dinosaur with radiation burns. the scale pattern is meant to look like the scars on bombing survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The design was referenced from classic dinosaur paintings of T.Rex. While the final design started diverging from that, and changed more and more onward, this seems like it's going back to that idea. I wonder if Anno and the others went back and researched the development of Gojira '54; or knowing Anno, he probably knew all of this already.

I think it's refreshing to see a Godzilla design that isn't trying to go for a "Cool Japanese monster" aesthetic,but rather a horror one. There's room for something that different in the series. Just picked this up. At Toy R Us it went for $40, but at this local toy store liquidating for the season, it was $54.99 at 50% off. Not fucking bad. It's fucking huge. Even bigger than the Pacific Rim Kaiju.
It looks good. Articulate jaw, arms, legs, wrists, tail (no elbows or knees though), and neck. Head and spikes could be a tad bigger but other than that it's pretty flawless.
It's long as fuck. Tail is probably 1.5x body length. Will be great for play.
If it could just look up it would be virtually perfect.

Honestly, that was one of the main reasons I bought the lot. My collection started with Glenfire, and shot all over the place until I got three of the renewal reissues of the orignal six Ultra brothers, and now all I need is Zoffy.
To get back on track, I know very little of Kaiju such as Goji and Gamera, but I know most by name at the least, and looking at MonsterArts makes me want the Ghidora (?) repaint and Kiryu so bad, but those pricetags...

I agree with you, but I think Bandai has lost faith in the SHMA line for the most part. Likewise with Ultra-acts (not completely dead, but very inactive like SHMA, even though there's still characters they can make that'll still sell decently.)

Ulttaman are known quantities by then but haven't been seen or needed in decades, the METEOR technology is based on tech from past alien invasions, there is a kaiju fanatic on the team who knows every classic kaiju that shows up, every Ultra up to 80 cameos and generally references the end of each series... you can't be more wrong if you tried. Your comparison would fit shit like Ultraseven Evolution or maybe Max, not Mebius. Mebius is like the magical alternate universe where Toho came back after twenty years with a sequel to Terror of MG.
