Poorfag here who recently really got into the original MSG, and is a long time tread-head modeler of ww1 tanks and aircraft.
After seeing MS designs on the show, started looking into gunpla... are the cheap $5-10 models worth getting?

Well there are a lot on eBay. Look for the EW series or the SD to stay as cheap as possible, or some older rx-78 should be around there too.

The HG Origin Zaku II and the MG 2.0 are the bast Zakus, though the Fz is quite a nice update on the suit.

The HG Zaku II is a really really nice little kit and pretty fairly priced at $12-15 on Amazon.
However, the problem is that HGs are even cheaper on actual import sites.
You should read the Gunpla General's OP copypasta. It has a comprehensive list of some of the import sites used for Bandai kits, which also happens to apply to many of the other Japanese toy lines posted on /toy/ as well as resources for different needs.
One that's super-useful, for instance, is Dalong, a repository of most modern Bandai kits and models. Though in Korean, it's easy to navigate and understand and provides very good rundowns of the various modern kits of a medley of ranges.
Amazon has a bunch of japanese sellers that offer free shipping and really good prices if you don't mind waiting a few weeks for the kits to arrive
If you want to see great engineering get the mg zaku 2.0. Its one of the best MG kits ever made and still the best Zaku II.
The hguc zaku II has aged a bit but was good for its time. Hg engineering has drastically improved since then though.

This right here. It's almost insane how inexpensive HG kits are these days, thanks to the dollar-to-yen conversion rate. It just prices out better to use the competitive dollar on an import site that deals in yen rather than using domestic stores. It's the golden age for us (aside from the fact that manufacturers are wising up and giving us less accessories than they were 2 years ago...)

OP if you aren't able to financially commit to the hobby, you need to find another hobby that takes less cash. We don't need any more casuals in the gunpla community, you guys are cancer and make the hobby less enjoyable.
