***READ THE GUIDE****

For those of you just joining us, please read this guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Gunpla/Plamo Secret Santa!

Sign ups run until December 4th. I'll try to have everyone paired up by December 6th.

Like last year, I'm going to have everyone fill out a Google form so I can collect the information easily.

Also, if you have some kits in your backlog that you are willing to part with feel free to email me a list and estimated values.

>>
>>5292466
>That glorious hammer in 1/100 scale
Fuck, I might need to buy one now.
>>
>>5292466
these IBO releases are confusing me. Bandai usually waits until at least when the MS is shown in the series to build some hype before releasing a kit, now we already have multiple versions of MS that we havnt even seen in action or care about yet.

do they expect them all to be received well or know something we dont? there were enough problems in later Unicorn episodes of kits not matching MS capabilities, seems like they are taking a bit of a chance with some of these announcements.
>>
>>5292479
I for one expect them to use that common frame for maximum kitbashability.
>>
>>5292479
Bandai's MO for releases the past several series is at least in the beginning of the series to time releases to coincide within a couple days of the in show appearance. What's strange is the huge amount of 1/100s so quickly after the hg release versions. Its been quite a while since bandai did this and on top of that we seem to be getting a new one like every month.

Repost from /m/

So here's an internal frame view of that Hi Res Barbatos

It's 1/100 and basic jist of the caption is that internal frame uses metal parts which wasn't too hard to guess from the pictures

Not the greatest picture but Im just pulling this from twitter
>>
>>5292511
Inner frame looks cool enough. Too bad the armor looks all kinds of fucked up.
>>
>>5292511
>metal parts
This thing is going to be absurdly expensive.
>>
>>5292511
>metal parts
Let's just skip the best step in making gunpla, and instead of using superior plastics, shitty diecast, so our kits will never be able to stay tight again.

Good job bandai, you fucked up.
>>
>>5292479
its a result of what they started doing with gundam age to have kits released right around the time it shows up in the episode. On that note, that image that keeps getting thrown for gundam age isnt referring to sales, its referring to the release velocity. They were trying to pump out more kits in a shorter time frame.

Reason being is for both gundam seed destiny and gundam 00 there were several instances of kits being released long after they had any significance to the show. Destiny was the worst with s freedom hg and detiny hg not being available until 1 month before and after the show ended respectively
>>
>>5292540
Calm down. We don't even know how much of the frame uses metal parts yet.

It ain't a model kit in the first place

>and instead of using superior plastics, shitty diecast
I thought the shole selling point of a metal frame is to make it sturdy but whatever BANDAI IS ALWAYS DUMB AMRITE
>>
>>5292540

lets just assume something, without knowing shit in reality.
>>

i'll just completely ignore the fact the metal build figures are the highest quality they make.

>>

>>
>>5292730
If we do, don't make it a single suit.
Maybe something from a certain show or a simple theme, so it's fairly open to all. Keep in mind I say this because last time we got one(?) entry I think with the Mock anon.
>>
>>5292739

Finished up Barbatos. Here's a quick pic until I can use my actual camera.
>>
>>5292739
I was working on something but got a bad reaction with paints and thinner that made me have to strip and start over which just killed my motivation to finish the kit and started working on something else instead. Its still sitting around half painted.
>>
>>5292654
No they're not, I've owned 5 MBs, every single one has come with a set of loose diecast joints in at least one area, and every single one has joints that gradually loosen very quickly. Diecast isn't good for joints, it never has been and won't be until companies start using higher grade diecast. Cheap metals expand to adapt to friction a great deal, and that's exactly what happens on MBs.

So, no, it isn't their highest quality line, and it's far from it. Even the metal composite GFFs use better diecast than the MBs. Think about that before you spew shit next time.

>I thought the shole selling point of a metal frame is to make it sturdy but whatever BANDAI IS ALWAYS DUMB AMRITE
if that's the case, they'll stay away from diecast. Diecast is good for morons who don't care about posing their toys and just think diecast means premium, not people who actually give a shit about the products they purchase.
>>
>>5292752
Forgot to quote the second guy's post number,
>>5292598
>>
>>5292654
The metals they use warp easily and unlike plastic the metal doesn't care to retain its original shape. Plastic is better
>>
>>5292273
What kind of career do you guys have to be able to buy gunpla?
>>
>>5293055
Gunpla is cheap
>>
Not him/them but I just like the idea of a mech model/figure using metal. It's a gimmick, but one I like for robot stuff.
>>
>>5293058
I'd much rather my joints last long than people be satisfied that their toys are diecast.

Have you ever actually felt how brittle diecast is? It holds up better than plastic but it becomes just as strong as plastic when you realize just how much more heavy it is, so it essentially solves a problem then creates another, then ON TOP of that, it expands and warps, because it's a weak metal. It also comes out less clean and is harder to paint. It's a nightmare material that shouldn't ever be used on toys.
>>
>>5293055
Wage slave for the state making about 45K a year (It's my first "real" job).

That said unless you live someplace with crazy import laws like south america then gunpla is cheap. Most hg are $10-$20 and most mg are under $50-$60.

MS are glossy in almost every gundam series, especially modern ones. Besides military vehicles being painted in flat colors, modelers often use flat coats on smaller scale models due to the effect of colors appearance flattening over a distance. It helps give a sense of scale compared to leaving it glossy.

Of course, painting it domething like this would be the most accurate to its in show appearance, but I have no idea how to go about positioning the highlights.

I was going for making pic related but the wide sholders make him look like garo. Used legillis legs for this guy with sinanju parts. Getting two from 1999 (muh points).

Took two days and an email for them to send confirmation email. I thought I totes missed out, but they've sent the confirmation and said I actually got in early enough.

Now have to wait three weeks for it to come in if Auspost doesn't take early holidays.

While I'm waiting for the mud mix to dry with barbatos, I thought I'd start working on fixing super fumina's face.

The first mod is to bring the eyes forward and is ridiculously easy. If you can remove nubs, you can do this. Just remove the eyebrow and clear lense pieces and open up the head. On the inside of the face is a tab with a smaller tab on it around the mouth area. Simply clip or shave down the smaller tab and you can now push the eyes forward to be more level with the face.

The only issue is that you can't push the eyebrow piece back in or it will keep the eyes recessed again. I have an idea on how to fix this though and if it doesn't work I'll just fill the holes in and handpaint them.

Heard there was a chinese seller but they stopped the idea due to the pieces running the equivalent of $90 USD or so.

I had this genius idea to melt the c clip pieces back together. You can guess how well that went. Found some dry shoe goo and some wet goo as well to attach the shoulder armor directly to the shoulder.
Works ok.

>>
>>5294017
Got 2 headed my way from amiami.
>>
>>5294041
Hairspray technique makes it more convincing.

But otherwise your chip marks are so big compared to the proper scale of the model. They should be half to one third the thickness/width of what you're doing.

In-context? PSA only gets damaged with beam weapons. For that you probably should be looking into simulating accumulated dust in the dips and corners of the model rather than the peaks or high points. (Refer to "ambient occlusion" for 3d modelling).
>>
>>5294000
How is it shitposting? I'm posting WIPs.

>>5294034
They're just pre-cut pinewood bases from arts and craft stores. They cost like a dollar at most for one that size. Pick up a wood stain color of your choice while you're at it.

I never knew about that. I'll try that on proper armor kits though.

As for the size of the marks, when I tried to make them smaller they just looked like weird freckles (like on the lower legs). Might just be the color though, I'm using a metallic gunmetal. I like how it turned out on the colored parts but not so much on the white. Maybe I should get a finer brush?

Not sure how I would go about simulating dust on this particular kit either.

Hard to get a clear pic, but it's just the standard eye area. I trashed the sticker. After it ripped it wouldn't adhere to the surface anymore. I tried to start by coloring in the black area with a gundam marker but it just makes a mess.
>>
>>5294096
Yes, use a smaller brush. For the marks, use it on the outer angles (high points).

Dust? Use pastels and cram minute amounts into the inner angles.
>>
>>5294100
Extract the paint and use a small brush to hand brush it in.
>>
>>5294100
Mask off the faceplate, and primer in the eye area, so you can fill in the blacks and then the lenses with greens.

For the eyes, use an initial layer of white, and then put green on top.
>>
>>5294102
Okay, I'll try and find a finer brush. Thanks anon.
>>
>>5294114
This more or less shows you the basic idea of how to handle a fine brush and loading up just barely enough paint on the tip to get the details done finely.

Depends on the paint I'm using. For tamiya paints I use around 10-15 PSI. For airbrushing topcoats I bump that up by about 5 and use that level for mr.color paints as well.

30 is too much for normal use. But if you can get an air regulator to drop the pressure the compressor should work.

So in practice you might nab an older UC kit like the HG Char for $3 if it's still going for $8.16 + FS. Or possibly a Graze for $6 if it's still going for $10.99 with Prime.

>>

>What if I drop in a bit of Future or clear nail polish to add joint friction?
It'll keep expanding, that's how metals, especially cheaper not so rigid ones, work. That's why metals need to be continuously tightened for certain applications, and when we simply don't have the option to do that effectively on diecast products, they shouldn't be made using diecast.

It's heavy, the mould quality is worse, it takes paint worse, and it doesn't work for joints. It serves no benefit to the toy industry other than making the weird diecast fans happy that they have their heavy toys.
