I honestly think the articulation is ass. The ankle joints are pefectly visible but barely move. The waist is difficult because of his tall hips and pointy abdomen. Wrist joints are basically swivels.

I think with the star wars SHF they started scaling them closer to the Hasbro 6" line to compete.
Vader and Stormtrooper from the SHF line are so small compared to their Black Series counterparts, Vader especially, so I think after those two were made, Bandai made the conscious decision to upscale them a bit. My Luke and Maul are massive when standing beside my Zyuurangers or Kamen Rider but they scale perfectly against Hasbro's Black Series Star Wars figures.
The 6" scale in general is really wacky and none of it really adds up. Even within companies they don't really get it right. Try standing a Black Series and Marvel legends figure side by side, both from hasbro, and you understand what I mean.

I can really see that they ramped up the angularity in the left one to make him more of a clear villain design. The 45 was the first design of movie Iron Man I really liked since Mk6, with the main Avengers 1, IM 3, and Mk43 looking like they tried way to hard to be different from the Mk6, which felt like perfection. Overall left seems a bit awkward since its almost like the Mk 45 proportioned like the older suits. I can see them further refining it so that it becomes more and more of its own thing, though.
