I have a bit of experience in painting shit though.

Some of those look pretty nice (I think I've seen Drossel around before). Also I am fine with garage kits, as long as it doesn't require extra parts that would be unavailable outside of Japan.

There are a ton of garage kit robots out there, but unfortunately, tracking down a reliable, somewhat sanely priced source for them is a pain in the ass. I remember there was a fantastic looking Megaman Zero figure line a few years back, actually...

depends on your definition of somewhat reasonable. I got it a few months ago on amazon for $120. I'm sure if you actually put any effort whatsoever in, you could find it for less.

Well most people are casuals so who gives a shit what they think about my tiny robot dolls? And easily 75% of them are moe in their own right. A couple early waves have the thousand yard stare and there's always Benio at the bottom of the barrel, but "muh robot doesn't show enough emotion" is just pathetic and you should feel ashamed to even think that way.
>>
>>4499527
Really, any hobby that is both a time and money sink isn't ''responsible". Cars you can never legally drive as fast as you make them capable of, muscles that are more useful to a day laborer than an office worker, vidya that piles up, crafts/food/service hobbies that are only useful if they actually gain a profit in the long term, etc.

You're talking about a return on investment via entertainment. Some folks actually enjoy making kits, and going the extra distance of sanding, painting, polishing, etc. So for 100-200 dollars, some people will get as many hours of enjoyment as they're willing to put into it.

If we compare it to the price of a movie, that's roughly 10-20 movies, which are between 1.5-2 hours long. We'll just be pessimistic and say you need to achieve 40 hours of enjoyment from the kit to recoup the investment. That's a pretty short amount of time, really, especially if you're a kit enthusiast and keep coming back to add details.
>>
So with the daibadai stuff, do they come with joints you can addon or what?

How exactly do they work? Do you have to drill the holes?
>>

>>
>>4499564
You make a good point. I don't think that every hobby that is also a money sink is irresponsible per say.
What I was trying to say is, when you KNOW that you are paying more for a product that you know costs less (market price) then it becomes irresponsible.

Sure you can buy expensive toys (or car parts) for hundreds of dollars for your hobby but it is more sensible to do so when that is its actual worth.
I am aware of "economic value", how much someone is willing to pay for goods despite the actual price.

Im pointing the irrationality of someone who has attached an outrageous economic value to something and then believes those who don't share that value are poor. When in fact they might just be more economically sensible.

Also I generally don't think they are cute so convince me
>>
>>4499593
It's agreed that someone buying a product that's 20 dollars for 40 dollars is ridiculous, however, scarcity does drive the price. I'd be more offended at the fact that so much of it is going to middleman fees, which is a price of convenience fee and should be reducing the more interconnected our world becomes.

If the kit is low-run, high QC, and relatively unique, then the price is somewhat justified. I know that if I bought one of these and went through the trouble of sanding, painting, and polishing the figure to my exact preference, I'd be a lot more attached to it than something I bought for 10 bucks at my local walmart that I can replace on a moment's notice. That's not to say there's anything inherently bad about either product, just that there are different values you could attach to justify either one.

The figma has a silver paint in the eyes that gives it a better shine. It makes her look more lively, and in my opinion much better face. Also it fits in scale with most of my other figs because its not as large as the chogokin. I prefer the figma for those reasons and in terms of quality they are about the same. Chogokin's knees do feel a bit loose at times and that is where the diecast is. Hands are loose in their sockets as well, and fall out easily at times. Thats my comparison

They were clearanced out for a while. I think there were "rampant" QC problems? I think maybe the Japanese were just being picky, since all the American buyers I heard from said they had no problems. Mine was fine aside from the eye in my little uh... I forget what they call that little robot helper. Mine was glued in crooked and I can't fix it.

>>4505240
Uhg. I'm so spoiled from getting the pink one for so cheap that I don't want to spent 3 times as much for the black one.
Maybe one day. I'd rather spend that money to further my Fewture Devilman collection. I already paid inflated aftermarket prices for a Parfom Aegis. I didn't want to take the risk that I'd never see it again, even if it's relative scarcity on Mandarake were temporary. It's just too cute. I mean even Scarlet Rain was clearanced and common as dirt, yet now look around. I think I've seen two on Mandarake that were cheap since they sold out over a year and a half ago. Actually, I think I might have bought one of them.

of course then stuff like Revoltech ZoE Ardjet sells out on all stores, with none on Mandarake, I panic and order from Yahoo Japan through a proxy. I get it below retail price, but then they restock the ones in stores, AND go on clearance price for much less than I paid.
Oh well. At least I have her.

It actually makes a ton of sense from a structural and aerodynamic standpoint. By having the cockpit be a literal -cock-, it leaves room for more jointage in the unit's torso and places the pilot in pretty much the exact center of mass. Plus it's easier to protect.

1) The joints are cheap already, and the company often packages or has a store package an appropriate set with the kit.
2) They don't bore out joint holes for you because that would cost a fair bit, and they don't mold them with joints in mind because it would require production materials they don't have access to.
>>
>>4519510
...couldn't they just add the negative of a hole to the mould?
>>

That adds complexity to the mould which increases the price.

>I meant the joints, they're on the busines for articulated figures, it'd be easy for the company to buy cheap joints in bulk but they don't. Mindboggling

It's not so mindboggling. Manufacturers typically set a minimum volume for bulk purchases, especially for inexpensive products like these joints that only make them money if they're sold in sufficiently large quantities.

Given the relatively limited demand and small production runs for these figure kits, it probably wasn't worth it for the kit maker to buy the joints at the joint manufacturer's minimum volumes.

It's only slightly less convenient for the consumer but by not including the joints themselves, the figure kit maker can keep overhead lower, avoid excessive production material surplus and keep the material supply chain simpler.
>>
>>4519541
>>4519535

We used to solve the problem of such small holes by pushing metal rods through the mould in the spots where the holes should be in the final product.

Wait, WHAT?? They reproduce these but don't design them for joints to fit? That strikes me as retarded. If the joints are cheap, how are they "production materials they don't have access to"?
I must be misunderstanding you, because these pictures of a Dimension Diver kit clearly show room for joints, and some of them even look to have peg holes, unless this is after they've been worked on. >>4519246

Actually, looking at Daibadi's website, it is showing instructions for drilling holes and even carving down the reinforcements at the base of the ball joints. Wow. That is shit for an $80 kit.
http://www.daibadi.com/porynian04_02_02.htm
Still, nothing about having to burr out the spherical area for the ball joints. THAT would be a nightmare.

Is there something about the Other M suit design that makes people hate on it so much, or is it just that it's recognizably from Other M and everyone hates the game itself?

Cause that game was inexcusably garbage, but I've personally never found anything objectionable about that version of Samus' design. In fact I think the Smash 4 character model in particular is one of the best-looking iterations of Samus.
>>
>>4528343
>is it just that it's recognizably from Other M and everyone hates the game itself?
Pretty much.
>>
>>4528343
For me it's mostly the design. The association with a horrible game is just a nail in it's coffin. It's no surprise that whole game is poison. I never played the game but I have seen a few short clips and heard plenty of reviews.
It's possible there's some nostalgia involved, but I just hate how it looks like they put a 3D modeling smooth filter to the whole thing.
I dunno. Maybe I need to look at it again. It's funny because I'm usually not a fan of red+green, so I should like the new colors.
No, I think I at least still hate half the design. Taking out all the little flairs like the ridges on the shoulderpads or the hips, etc. I might like some of the changest to the chestplate, but that's probably it.

The game isn't about shooting. It is about exploration. It is pretty much the equivalent of Super Metroid, but in first person. The genre didn't change.

People despise the game for the plot being so fucking retarded and so out of character for what little we've seen of Samus so far.
I think someone even said they thought the game mechanics were just fine. (It might have been Mike from Penny Arcade.)
I'm too old to "give things a chance" when it comes to entertainment and the opinions of strangers online with no good arguments of why I should.
