They need to redoo this doll properly desu.

Mattel just released a bunch of ballerinas and some "birthday" dolls, all super boring and uninspired, even if some have nice faces in the prototype images.

There's also the new Barbie Look dolls.

In wich they try to be a little like what they portrait on instagram...

I miss the rooted lashes, and the outfits are not exactly for my taste, but I think I'll get one of them.
>>
>>5280618
They need to shitcan whoever is obsessed with making everything look like cheap crap from the 80s-early 90s. If people really wanted to pay $30-50 for 80s/90s Superstar era junk, most of it wouldn't be $5 on eBay.

It looks so fucking off

And yeah the local toy shop has a fuckton of 80s/90s collector Barbies for less than that. I've bought a ton so far since they do have very nice clothes. Wish they would get in some old Fashion Avenue stuff. I really wish Mattel would bring that back, instead of the cheap tacky 3-dresses-and-shoes packs that are $15.

This one is live action, not animated.

Did anyone else pick up any of the Tokidoki blind box vinyl figures? I ended up getting three boxes--got #4, #7 and #9, plus the BC Exclusive (center) which is the only one you can specifically buy. I'll probably buy a few more boxes... I'd like to try to get the Tokidoki ones but don't want to pay the $40 they're going for on Ebay.
>>
>>5283253
Omfg Barbie and the Rockers at #9. I need this in my life.
>>

That one's going on ebay for about $12 or so! In fact the only ones I see going for anything exceptional are the 2, 3 and sometimes 8 aka the actual Tokidoki dolls.

I swear Mattel WANTS Barbie to go down at this point. They almost had the right idea with Barbie basics. Sure, the dolls weren't that articulated, but they were gorgeous and I really liked the focus on the fashion packs as opposed to collecting lots of dolls just for their clothes.
>>
>>5285036
What's bizarre to me is that they're removing articulation from the more expensive lines. If a $12.99 Monster High doll can have elbow, knee and wrist articulation... why doesn't a $24.99 Barbie have the same? heck, the previous Style Luxe line had articulation, so why remove it?

Mattel must have hired a few "experts" into the top levels, and they make terrible choices repeatedly because it's what they like.
>>
>>5285071
Well, if what has been popping up recently is any clue, they're going to make a new 'basic' line for EAH and possibly MH with only basic shoulder, hip, and neck articulation. Which will probably replace the $12 dolls, pushing the articulated ones higher.
>>
>>5285126
Yep, the MH ones just showed up in the thread. Ugly useless arms.

I also like the fold out cases they made in the 70s and 80s. Even the ones that didn't fold out into little play sets were great... I used to have one that had a bar for the Barbie clothes hangers, but it got busted in a move.

I had the rerelease of this same house, the pink and white version. Got it secondhand so it was missing some things but it was still my favorite as a kid. It seemed so much bigger back then. My grandma found a tape from the day they gave it to me, and you can see my little 3 year old self trying to comprehend how huge it was.

I got a doll house recently.

I got the smaller possible because it was found online, and I wanted to check the material, and how easy it is assemble. The others I found were hu-ge, but they only come in white/pink/black (monster high themed), so I'll see how I can handle a custom before moving on to the next...

Ignore my doll's clothes, please. I didn't wanted to expose itens I treasure to the raw material.

Also interesting to see how they got around the loophole of people/kids possibly (and by possibly I mean inevitably) using inappropriate language with her. How do you store your Barbie clothes? Do you have any 'official' Barbie closets/wardrobes, or have you made your own?

Right now my Barbie clothes are in one of those multi-drawer boxes meant for jewelry, but I'd like to find a hanging wardrobe set-up for the nicer and more fragile/vintage pieces.
>>
>>5291790
Yeah but I mean like, should I fix their paint on their heads? Its super chipped. I have no idea what the values are since Ebay is so skewed and I obviously just have nude dolls in bad shape.
>>
>>5295296
I have a vintage makeup/travel case that was in my grandma's attic that they get stored in. Its not very organized, but small accessories like shoes and purses are kept in a little built in pouch inside.
>>
>>5295781
Depends on what you want to do with them. Do you want to sell them? Keep them for personal projects? If you wanted to sell, I would touch up the paint, maybe find some cheap vintage clothes (Mattel brand or not) and sell them with those. I can't really tell the extent of the damage but 'very nice' Kens form that same year tend to go for maybe $20 so I don't know if you'd get much.

Damn, that blue + long sleeved looks so much better.
>>
>>5295917
Personally i restore vintage dolls, and if you have no idea how to colour and replicate the vintage paint, amatuer restore jobs actually lower the price since restorers don't know if you used cheap/wrong paint that damages the doll underneath and vintage people prefer to have an original damaged doll than a fixed up one for some reason.
The damage on your kens are pretty minimal by vintage doll collectors standards so i wouldn't try restoring it.
Just clean it up the dolls, look at the going price for nude vintage kens in past ebay lots and you should get a sale.
>>
>>5299468
>>5295917
Well, I discovered something. The black haired Ken was, at some point, blonde. The black is a sloppy and very old paint job. I can't remove it without most of his original paint coming off. He has other damage too (missing fingers, scratches). I'll leave the brunette as is, but this one I think I'll do an obvious custom/restore to go with my other ones that showed up in similar shape.
>>
>>5299530
Rubbing alcohol should remove newer acrylic paint on vintage dolls with 'restore' jobs since even MSC comes off without damaging vintage paint.
Either way, almost no one likes blond kens so go nuts.
>>
>>5299621
Its definitely not newer paint, and it seems more like an enamel than an acrylic. Probably was original owner, maybe she wanted it to look like someone in particular. There's also some weird blobby pink on his mouth and in his nostrils I noticed when comparing the two. I tried rubbing alcohol but it started taking off the original paint too.

Yeah, she also goes by the name Kira. The asian version of Chelsea is also called Renee. There is also a recent black doll called Renee..

The black one also goes by Christy, Nikki and Asha.

I just think Mattel doesn't have a clue what they are doing and should just reboot and start from scratch as there are just too many confusing characters and relationships, like for example Midge got married and had a baby but now she is young and single again with no mention of her kids or partner.
>>
>>5310122
>with no mention of her kids or partner.

Just like Barbie's younger sisters Kelly and Krissy.
>>
>>5308972
The different names in this case don't refer to the character, but the name they've given that particular face mold. It makes it easier for Mattel than what they did with the previous 'barbie basic' line, which was given them numbers.

I do agree that Mattel needs to majorly overhaul the Barbie playline. Trouble is, at this point they are just shooting out in a million different directions and quality, creativity and the brand (not to mention sales!) are suffering for it.
>>
>>5310122
even their animation is a mess.

You have a lot of the basic doll advertisement animation specials, which don't really have a canon. They haven't been related since the 80s.

You have LITD, which is supposed to star animated dolls, and largely refers to the history of the toys themselves, while making everyone act like an escaped mental patient. It also seems to be a bit self-depreciating, acknowledging that Barbie has had many careers yet letting us think she's unskilled at anything but runway modeling. They made a big deal out of her just getting a driver's license even though she was a racer at some point before.

The recent video blogs treat her as a living person, but she's a teenage girl.

The dolls themselves have never had a consistent canon. 60s Ken had a hunting outfit with a rifle, for fuck's sake. Names are changed due to lapsed trademarks, characters aren't much consistent in name or appearance, if they get a name at all.
>>
>>5310128

A bit to bland for my taste, and so similar to Jailhouse Elvis Ken.

And she is Planitnum. So mostly the people who will mind to get her are going to be scalpers who want to re-sell her for 5x the original price.

I'm fairly certain this thread is split 50-50 as far as gender of the poster goes.

>playing with Barbies
Are you always this retarded or is it just when you're in an unfamiliar setting? Most of these dolls are collector dolls. That means they usually stay in the box or are on a shelf. The non-collector dolls are dressed up, customized, and what have you, but out of say 100 collectors, maybe 1 or 2 are actually playing with the dolls in the same sense as a child.

No one gives a shit about your outsider perspective, anon.
>>
>>5310989
Gross. Not sure why anyone would want that one.
>>
So, what the hell is going on with these 'Made to Move' dolls? I really want one but no where has them and I've been told by Mattel they are releasing next year yet a lot of people have them already as they bought them from Amazon and there are reviews on Youtube and other sites and how did they get them so early if they aren't coming out for another few months? Really confused.
>>
>>5311268
It's really simple, just chinese workers stealing dolls from the factory.
>>
>>5311268
Some places get small shipments of dolls prior to the wide release, which is how they end up on amazon or small toy shops periodically. I'd wait until they get a wide release unless you want to pay at least double retail.
>>
>>5311268
This always happens. Mattel/Mattel Shop/Barbie Collector is also usually the last in line to get new stuff.

The point is that you're crying Tumblr over... what, exactly? Mattel making a collector black Barbie over a regular playline black Barbie?

Mattel didn't make this to ~*~*~appease PC outrage~*~*~. They originally made the doll for the recipients for some award event in New York. Mattel frequently makes special OOAK dolls for celebrities, award winners, basically any time they can get some publicity out of it. Photos of the dolls leaked, and people assumed Mattel was making them for wide release. In fact it was only a few weeks ago that Mattel announced they decided to go ahead and produce some of those 6 dolls for their collector line, including this one due to its popular reception online.

So go ahead and wildly rant about Tumblr and PC because Mattel is making a collector doll of an award winning director in clothes she's frequently seen in. It'll... make you happy? But then who knows if anything does.
>>

>Nobody will buy it until it's $15 at Big Lots

I hope all the people complaining about the Ava doll selling out and 'not being able to get (niece/daughter/etc) one for Christmas!!' realize that Mattel sells several black Barbies aimed for playtime at a more reasonable price, so it's not like this was their only chance to get a black doll? I know the Ava doll had more detail, particularly the braids, but the Fashionista dolls are a option, the Style dolls are an option, the Look collection, etc.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Mattel's fashion packs for this year and hopefully in the future. It seems like they're getting away from the strangely designed, oddly shaped, usually coated in glitter pieces from the past few years and producing more normal/probable clothes.

I only wish they would make a line of basic staple accessories and pieces, even if you had to order them on the Mattel shop. Like a simple cardigan that you could order in black, white, pink, etc or basic t-shirts or pants, that sort of thing.

Obitsu White may work, though I'm not exactly sure which doll youre posting. Its a very pale milky flesh tone and is somewhat thinner than the average Barbie but is still comparable. The 2 part body with the chest joint and all vinyl torso is generally the best fit for rebodying Barbies.

Well to be fair Barbie's sales are in the shitter and they've already took out the black characters from international markets for the past few years (european Fashionista releases edited any dolls darker than teresa out of the packaging) so making the black option an exclusive is naturally what mattel would do...
>>5334914
They do fit the older shoes but the ankles can be weak so any high heels not covering the ankle can cause the doll to fall over.

Ok so this reminded me. I have a pair of boots like the ones she's wearing, but in black. I'd like to actually try to make them, but where do I get the plastic shoe lasts to glue the fabric uppers to? They're so spindly and thin I don't think I could possibly sculpt it myself and have it be sturdy.

Yes it comes across as a little creepy but I really don't understand all the backlash. Parents give their kids iPhones with Siri, Android phones with Google Now and Windows 10 laptops with Cortana, all of which record what you say and send that data off and no one gives a fuck about that but make Barbie do it and all Hell breaks loose. Ridiculous.
>>
>>5338301
Barbie as always had a target on her back. Sure you can tell your kid they can be an astronaut or president if they want to be, but give them a doll who is dressed as such and your suddenly effecting the childs free will or something. Parents need to chill the fuck out sometimes and get educated.

I'm not saying they're aren't issues with the doll, like connecting to any wifi with "barbie" in the name automatically, was a horrible decision.

>Eat my psychic dick, dumblr.

Lol nope. You're implying that the reason they made the Ava Duvernay Barbie is to "appease PC outrage," which you're using the article to "prove" since the article mentions Mattel got positive press from the Ava Barbie, after they got negative press for Hello Barbie in the past 2 weeks.

The Ava Barbie was originally made in early 2015. The plans for mass production were put into motion shortly after because people loved the dolls they made for that event, and the doll was sold to the public before Hello Barbie was released, and before Hello Barbie was getting mass negative press.

Keep trying, though. Or crying.

Holy shit! I love this doll body. The new elbow joints are great--there's a more natural range of motion and I never knew I needed my dolls to be able to touch their face, but there it is.

I'm not crazy about the brunette's face (too playline) but I'm not sure what doll/head to get to replace it. I'm going to buy regular Made to Move Barbie as well so I can get a better idea of their skintones before I buy dolls just for their bodies.

Technically MyScene dolls were their own line separate from regular Barbie. Every now and then they do a line like that, with its own plot and sub-lines separate from the more general and open ended Barbie line. The best two examples I can think of are the Life in the Dreamhouse dolls that were out recently and the Generation Girls dolls from 99 or so, both of which had Barbie as a character but both also had other cast members with distinct personalities and had a different look from other dolls out under the Barbie name (LinD being more cartoony faced than standard and GG being more realistic and youthful).
