In 5e, anyone can take the Magic Initiate feat, and get a 1st level spell they can cast once a day, and Find Familiar just so happens to be a 1st level spell (you also get two cantrips).
That means if you want a familiar, you got a familiar, regardless of class.
So, if you are a rogue, you've really got no excuse to not have a raccoon buddy.
What other animal/class combinations are awesome?

You can also take the ritual caster feat and get the spell that way. It's not like it's something you need to cast often or under dire circumstances.

>no excuse to not have a raccoon buddy
There is one good excuse: Raccoon isn't a legal choice for find familiar
>You gain the service of a familiar, a spirit that takes an
animal form you choose:
>bat
>cat
>crab
>frog (toad)
>hawk
>lizard
>octopus
>owl
>poisonous snake
>fish (quipper),
>rat
>raven
>sea horse
>spider
>weasel
Of course, if your DM is allowing alternate familiars, I'd go for a monkey. Maybe bigger than pic related, but it's adorable, not as likely to get murdered for being a pest, better at climbing, and more fantastical.

>sea horse
Why.

If your DM is too anal to let you use cat or weasel stats for a raccoon, find a new game.
im a druid/ warlock and my familiar is a homebrewed 5e version of pic related (the scorpion version)
i kept it on par with the warlock advanced familiars (pseudodragon, sprite, quasit, etc) so its not an overpowered familiar
I made a fighter with Magic initiate.
He has a small spider familiar that lives in his beard. Use it for scouting and shocking grasping people in metal armor (I'm an archer) and the DM lets me occasionally milk him for poison.

>sea horse
Are we talking Hippocampus or those tiny, male pregnancy monsters you find in reefs?
Why even include aquatic pets in 5th if there is no aquatic race templates, sea elves get barely a mention and Merfolk, after an entire edition without appearing once, have been retconned from having built up permenent communities to stone-age nomads.
If they were reliant on players making up their own races then why bother stating pet fish. After a player has done all the hard work stating their own fish would be childs play.

Because for the same price as ritual caster (one feat) you get 2 cantrips on top of the spell

>octopus

>weasel
>Give a snake fur and call it a mammal.
No.
