kek.

>>43536670

Alright let's start off with a topic. Any good hands / combos played tonight?

I just got through decimating my opponent with the Hydra Broodmaster.

I had Rosheen Meanderer out and six lands. Threw out a Savage Ventmaw and because I had Fires of Yavimaya (illegal in Modern but we play casually so it's accepted) he was able to attack, netting me 6 more mana which I used to bring out the Hydra Broodmaster. Ventmaw was killed when my opponent returned fire, and I let the rest of the damage through.

Next turn, 6 lands + Rosheen's tapped 4 netted me 10 mana. Spent 1 forest on the Broodmaster's ability, saved one mountain, first X was 1, second X was 7.

Here comes seven 7/7 tokens with haste. Outnumber out of fucking nowhere for 1R to deal 9 damage to target creature and open fire with an 8/8 and seven 7/7's. Good times.
>>
>>43537088

Shiiiit... guess we've been playing it wrong. I could never figure out how to use the XXF ability.

I thought it was what level of Monstrous you want to become, and how many tokens you want.

I always read that X is the value for both the number of tokens and their power/toughness.

So I had assumed the first X and the second X could be two different values.

So, by those values... if I had 10 mana in total to spend, 4 of which must be spent on values of X...

>2 Forest
>4 Mountain
>4 X
>-1 Forest for ability
>-1 Mountain for Outnumber
>8 mana left
>4X and 4X
>So Broodmaster would become an 11/11
>4x 4/4 tokens
>Outnumber would deal Rosheen + Broodmaster + 4x tokens = 6 damage (Enough to kill)
>Open attack for 11 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
>37

Yup, I'd still have won. Huh, well the more you know.

I don't understand why most Scapeshift run 4xBring To Light now. I mean, I get it: it tutors for your wincons and big spells, but it hurts the manabase A LOT ( and no need to say you already struggle to fucking get the required mana for early cryptics ), and doesn't make up for the main problem of Scapeshift, which is that it's a very slow deck. Also, the fact it's a sorcery fucks the " tutor cryptic " plan.

So I'd rather run more cantrips for consistency. Did I miss something for why I should sacrifice my manabase for an okay-tutor?
>>
>>43538341
>I don't understand why most Scapeshift run 4xBring To Light now.
They don't? People are just testing the new 4 color version but so far the traditional RUG version has had better results.
>>
>>43538394
http://mtgtop8.com/archetype?a=269&meta=51&f=MO

So far people seem to be satisfied with the butchered version of the deck.
>>
>>43538341

Well what else would they fetch up for with Bring to Light?
>>
>>43538563
Removal (Shatterstorm,Creeping corrosion, anger, pyro) or ramp. But still, not worth it at all imo.

Playing four is probably wrong. I play three, and it's been great. Against affinity you can snag a Creeping Corrosion, most creature decks have problems with Wrath of God, and you can play all of these on turn 3 or 4 off of BTL. Since you're playing four colors, you're also allowed more sideboard options.
>>
>>43537088
I had a turn 1 razorverge into birds into turn 2 mentor of the meek and temple garden into turn 3 double loam lion and drew two cards into a turn 4 collected company double mirran crusader and draw 1 card

I won that game
>>
Do you think it looks bad when a few cards in a deck are full art like volcanic fallout, but the rest are normal? Same for foils I guess?

I'm attending my first draft tommorow night and I had some questions about it, I'd imagine I'll need to bring sleeves for my draft deck? What do I do for basic lands? There aren't going to be enough for every one in the packs. I have a proxied deck, is it frowned upon to bring that to my locals for casual play?
>>
>>43541793
I feel like you should have asked this in another thread, but in order:
Bring sleeves if you want
Lands are provided
It's casual, so who cares?
>>
>>43541848
This was just one of the threads I frequent and the most active, thanks for the fast reply anon.
>>
>>43541793
I like penny sleeves for when I draft, just in case I get something really expensive that I'd like to keep undamaged. I've also played with sleeves for so long it feels weird not have them.
Lands are provided, don't worry about that.
Proxies can depend on who you're playing against but most people aren't evil.
Also a tip when drafting, don't worry about picking cards outside of your color. You don't have to play everything you draft, you realistically only need 23-25 good cards to play. Dual color is usually the best IMO. And don't worry, a majority of decks are kinda trolly. I won a draft tournament with cards I had never seen before so don't worry about powergamers
>>
>>43541972
I've never actually seen packs of penny sleeves at my lgs, do they sell them by you? Or do you just ask the clerk for some? (They give them to you when you buy cards)

Don't Nacatl. Not worth it. You have better spells to cast.

8-12 fetches
4-6 shocks
2-6 basics

I run 8 fetches, 6 shocks, and 6 mountains.
>>
>>43545510
I certainly hope you're baiting
>>
>>43545693
no copperlines?
my current lineup is something like
4 mire/4 foothills/2 mesa
3 foundry/2 stomping ground
2 copperline gorge
3 mountain
Also, why no Nacatl? I know it's a controversial topic, but a lot of the lists that top run it, so why shouldn't I?
>>
>>43545832
Thanks for the free win Zoo bros.
It's even easier when you shock and ping yourself half to death so you can play your mediocre beaters
>>
>>43545832
If all the top burn lists dropped 4 Lightning Bolt for 4 Lightning Strike, would you do it? I wouldn't.

You don't want Nacatl because it's at best a 3/3 that'll be Bolted after you've taken 2-5 damage to get out. You want fast (read: haste) creatures and things that immediately threaten (Eidolon). Burn is NOT a combat game. Your creatures are expendible burn spells. Getting 4 out of a Goblin Guide before having it get killed is plenty enough value. Nacatl is too slow, fucks your mana base, and is all-around better suited for a deck like Zoo.

Okay, example. Turn 1 is fetch into Forest and Nacatl, turn 2 is fetch into Foundry. If you're playing the mirror, Nacatl is gone the moment you turn it sideways. By turn 2, fetches and shocks included, you've taken 4 damage, plus at least 3 from Lava Spike and maybe 2 from Goblin Guide. Suddenly you're sitting on turn 2 post-combat without a creature, one untapped land, at 11 life against another burn player.

Don't run Nacatl.

Should I get a Living End deck? Is it good or just gimmicky?
>>
>>43546330
it's a fine deck, but it's such a boring deck to play.
>>
>>43546396
how so?
>>
>>43546410
The game plan is always the same.
There are certain nuances to it like knowing when and what to cycle against which decks but the win condition is always the same.
>>
>>43546410
the deck is good in certain metagames, and it has a lot of good matchups, but the deck is just cycle for a few turns, then cast a cascade spell, and it goes like that for hundreds of games. Obviously this is a generalization, but I've never found it to be fun. Sometimes you do get interesting games, but that often means you're on the losing side as well.
>>
>>43546450
I see, what suggestions do you have for modern decks that are similarly on the lower end cost-wise that would be more interesting to play? I want to make sure I'm playing a deck that doesn't just feel brain-dead.

use versatile artifact destruction like putrefy which can be used as a kill spell or qasali pridemage that functions as artifact hate but also a decent beater
play black with discard spells
play blue with counter spells, never tap out on turn 4
red has demolish which can stop him from casting the amulet or just destroy it, but a solid red deck should beat him by turn 4.

Why will Legacy die and people can finally come to Modern?
>>
>>43565985
In my experience, people that quit legacy generally quit magic altogether
I don't know anyone that has quit modern for standard, either
>>
>>43566028
I guess Standard to Modern to Legacy is considered to be the normal progression. I actually started in Legacy. It wasn't fun for me so I came to modern.
>>
Why do some of us feel we have to limit ourselves to one playstyle? I enjoy playing Modern, Standard, EDH, Legacy, and even Pauper when the chance arises. Not everyone I play with has the supposed thousands of dollars to throw away that are a "requirement" for some deck types, and even then so long as you're a smart enough player there's always a chance you'll win when facing grognards that powerful.
>>
>>43566060
I used to play Extended a lot. It was like a deeper Standard, where powerful cards could usually offset each other and a slow rotation kept things relatively fresh.

Modern is just in a place where it's not quite Extended, and it's not Legacy-lite. I don't even think Wizards really knows what it wants from the format.
>>
>>43565959
Well, I wouldn't go with the splash W, I do reather go with Black. Tasigur has proven to be really good and consistent, normally cost B to cast (can be turn 2 because i play thought scour) what do you want the geist for? and I see the lack of early mass removal (a.k.a. pyroclasm/anger of the gods) disturbing. Leyline of sanctity would be good agains abzan/jund, i mean if you are playing against mono red, just outfuck them with combo. I think its an interesting view of the deck, good spells, well balanced. But Tasigur vs Restoration Angel = Tasigur. Kolaghans Command/terminate vs path to exile = more diversity better.

>>
>>43567117
I really like Jeskai so I decided to build it. It's very close to UR twin with a little bit of white. It's actually how Temur twin is built; splashing only for Goyf. I think path really helps against a lot of creature decks. Now that there are a lot of aggro midrange decks on the raise, I enjoy playing this version. I agree that Grixis is the stronger build though.

>>
>>43566555

>I don't even think Wizards really knows what it wants from the format.

Wizzerds wants a format where aggro rules.

The only competitive aggro deck in Legacy is Berserk Poison, Vintage is pretty much made to be devoid of aggro because summoning sickness is a thing, and Standard is always a total zoo (not the deck).

The problem is that in order to make the format not become "Legacy with fewer cards," Wizzerds has had to ban all the good utility cards that make combo and control decks function properly.
>>
>>43567833

Nope.

3 dudes a turn is both a bulwark and a wincon on its own. The difficulty is in accelerating to six in white.

>>
>>43570572

>>
>>43570724
Its totally not though. They do it at your end step, you cant counter it, and then they get Dark back just in time for their upkeep. Replace them with either Paths or Bolts man, they're way more permanent. Jund only runs like 3 basics so the 4th one is free, assuming they haven't already fetched them out.
>>
>>43570759
If it draws abrupt decay hate, it also protects spellheart chimera though. Every counter that gets casted makes it get even bigger. It's a flying tarmogoyf in this deck. Protecting it from abrupt decay is paramount.

How do you play vs UWr Control as an aggro deck? I just lost in the most frustrating way to it
>>
>>43571634
I played UW Tron tonight at my locals. Game 3 against burn, I stabilized behind a spellskite and timely reinforcements. Then I purposely durdled until I cast Rev for 15. Put me on cloud nine for the rest of the night.
>>
>>43570088
What happens if both of them happen to have this creature out?
>>
Fuck all your meme rev decks and other shit.

Skred is king. Skred is anti-meta. Skred is reasonably priced control. Skred is anything but braindead.

Why haven't you accepted Mono-Red Skred control as your one true saviour.
It even fits the snowflake role by allowing you to slot in cards depending on your meta.
>>
>>43570690
It's still digging 5 deep for G and finding the last piece of your combo for 1G. Those two cards can make even a three-card combo like Tron crazy consistent, and yet they're considered okay for Modern. And yet the difference between Serum Visions and Ponder is apparently so great that one would apparently break UR-based combo, so it's not allowed.

If Tron can dig 5 deep for whatever it wants and tutor for combo pieces for 2cmc, why can't other decks?
>>
>>43573523
The fact that other decks have no use for those cards is the reason they aren't broken.
It's like complaining Phyrexian Unlife is overpowered because it enables Ad Nauseam

Those cards have drawbacks in that they only find certain cards. Granted tron and amulet built are built to take advantage of that, but you don't see those cards making them dominant, it merely makes them competitive, which is fine.

As someone who's been playing it for a while, it depends on the meta.
UW, without red, stomps fair midrange decks, and the slower creature decks like merfolk and company.
If Sphinx's Rev and Supreme Verdict are good in your meta, go for it. If abrupt decays are rare and you're surrounded by linear strategies like tron and affinity, twin will be way better.
