>Oi baws, look what I found
Coal was founded in your setting, within a few decades your setting will undergo it's own industrial revolution as they discover a means to make use of this power source. Besides the obvious, what changes in your setting, and what will it become?
>>
Elves only further establish dominance. Maybe dwarves can pose a threat to them, but that's questionable. Certainly though, elves make good use of it, and though they are at the top the gap widens still, possibly giving them the power to finally root out and kill any remaining humans assuming they haven't gone extinct already by that point.

>dwarves move onto blast furnace smiting and steel, clan revolution starts because labor caste replaced with mechanics
>elves reject due to elemental spirit ties and exhaust poisons; splinter revolutionary half elves defect to human lands
>steam engine/cotton ginny/flying shuttlecock spurs coal mining and humans clash with dwarves over land and mining rights. First railroad laid by men. First elemental steam engines built by men. First demonic possessed golem made by men. First demonic invasion tipped off by wealthy industrialist trying to cut out the middleman.

ugh

Setting already has coal and is in the midst of an industrial revolution. In a few short decades there warfare will be dominated by steam powered mechs supported by spellslinging war golems, with airships built around floating boulders bombing places from on high.
Mostly because of fucking gnomes.

Hahahaha holy shit i didnt even pick up on that. Hahaha i just lost my shit in the middle of my train. Why is this so funny haha

That's already happening.

The full-blown steam-driven/pneumatic civilization at the other continent agreed to export some neat stuff. Our top crazy sages are attempting to reverse-engineer the iron horses we currently have, and reclaim the one which was possessed by ghosts.

Meanwhile, technology advances here and there, like wooden railways for carriages, gas maks for dorf miners, etc.

Well sure, but sadly most nations are gonna keep going with the whole noble thing.

Guns dont really work against wizards and dragons.

Too late for that, famalama. The setting already underwent two.

Explain more?

>Coal was founded in your setting, within a few decades your setting will undergo it's own industrial revolution
That suggests that coal is necessary for an Industrial Revolution, and that's false.

How do I prevent the Industrial Revolution?

just replace thermodynamics with magic

The setting is essentially 1920's dieselpunk/weird war stuff, only with space travel. The discovery of efficient magical fuel has led to second age of exploration, except now every dinky third-world shithole could afford to plant its flag on a planet or two. With decentralization that followed, some planet governments became uppity and now we have "old worlds" still under control of empires and a whole bunch of space americas, going deeper and deeper into frontier.

Oh, and elves living in the huge dyson sphere at the edge of explored space, very unamused that lower races managed to leave their shitty rock earlier than they expected. They're not really aggressive, though, they just fly around yelling loudly at anyone who touches or studies old precursor relics.

Oh, and because it's hard to control space travel, the americas are starting to fracture in their own double-americas. The setting is a huge, glorious political clusterfuck right now.

coal was used for hundreds of years, chap. There just wasn't any large-scale demand for it.

If people wanted some, they dug or bought it.

If people wanted a steady supply, they paid the charcoal cookers.

Nobody ever needed the truly staggering amounts of coal mining until the industrial revolution happened, not the other way around.
>>
>>46763829
so the world is just starting to discover smelting?
>>
>>46763829
Wait, my setting is already using magitech. The delicate structures of power are based around wizards acting as both magic users and the equivalent of engineers, in designing fireball-spewing cannons and spark-shooting pistols.

You start throwing a true industrial revolution into the mix, and now there'll be nothing to limit who gets what resources - the mages can't limit who actually learns how to science.
>>
>>46767570
That's pretty simple. Slavery and feudalism are guaranteed to prevent it even if required technogy exists. Just make sure that the technology doesn't get in hands of those who are non-feudal expansionists and prefer some sort of wage system over slavery.

Shouldn't guns work really well against dragons, considering their Touch AC is atrocious and them bullets hit Touch?

What were they mining for if not coal?
>>
>>46773111
Old Gypsy woman told them there'd be diamonds. They were just a little early.
>>
>>46773131
Wait, so diamond was found before coal in this universe?

Whole concept is retarded and OP is a faggot.

That said, carbon in diamonds comes from primordial carbon or less commonly, subducted algae in oceanic sediment. It's very difficult to get coal down into the mantle where the pressure is high enough to form diamonds since coal forms in low density continental rock.

The necromancers look at the power source with glee, then immediately try to make their unmanned suits of armor bigger and stronger.
>>
>>46767570

An alliance of druidic peoples, rangers, and newly-outcast "heretical" clerics, along with some more scholarly and wise mages and engineers, wage war against the industrialized nation(s).

The inherent necromantic nature of coal brings plague and death to the downtrodden populace, and resistance movements have begun to form as both a means of resisting the oppressive control of those in charge of industry, and to defend to peasantry against the coal-blackened undead that begin to rise in the crumbling shanty-towns of industry workers. Fiery clerics begin persecuting heretics with furious abandon, preaching absolute, fanatical devotion to the populace with acting as a police force and inquisition against the rebellious populace. They are unaware that while they once worshipped the light and purity, their worship is now corrupted by the black taint of undeath.

>>46775830
Why aren't there steam wizards who use coal to power their spells?
