After much bullshitting and joking, my group is finally running a heavy metal themed oneshot.

An up-and-coming metal band made of traditional metal-head fa/tg/uys, finally gets a big break opening for a real band. After the show, partying with the band amidst to groupies and booze, a strange old roady, in a trailing coat completely made of band patches, hands a dusty tome to your band, promising them to learn the heaviest lyrics, and the truth of metal from it.

The party goes on, and the band passes out, only to wake up in a new world. A darker world. A METAL world.

Using their /tg/ knowledge, cargo van full of weapons, pyrotechnics and amps, and mystically enhanced skills, they must journey through these brutal lands, mastering the arts of music, and bringing metal to the people, all while writing some kickass lyrics based on their journeys.

Who's played similar? Quest suggestions?

Dumping pics.

In the beginning, there was the world, and there were the ancient ones.

The Ancient Ones ruled the cold, dark earth and all that eked a living on it with the raw entropy. The act of survival was the only one, and many turned to these foul powers in worship to siphon it off for their own use. The three faces of the Ancient Ones were Death (the shadowy devourer), Black (The frozen end of all things) and Doom (the unquiet stillness). There were only those men who bound themselves to such powers, and those who tried to avoid and survive.

After some time, three paragons of these survivors arose. Through superhuman strength and leadership, they found that man has its own power and they called it Metal. These three scions rose to godhood, leading man against the Ancient ones and their servants. They no longer just survived, but flourished. The three were Power (the light that banishes the darkness), Folk (the warmth of the heart of man), and Speed (the wind that runs). They led man to carve out their own lands, and fight to this day.

Music is the spirit of Metal, no matter for good or ill. Men of both sides and the beings of the world all use music to shape aspects of their lives. Herd beasts bellow baselines the swiften their metallic hooves, predators stun their prey with distorted bellows, and man alone created instruments to mimic the power of the gods and creatures.

Given time, all things come to harmony; even the most discordant static of a Industrialite will sync with the rest of the electric whine of its hive. Because of this, some people finds those who meet their tempo, and an instant bond is formed, combining their individual skills and powers into something more... The Band.

Bands are the great adventurers of the Metal Realm. They explore, they create, they fight and they are hailed as heros or villains by those drawn and affected by their music. No one knows how these form, only that they are the ones most likely to shape the world, and that band changing is a monumental occasion. Wary are those who see a band break up, or changes in a Band- such consequences can be great...

>>46822501
All these godheads get a domain. Folk metal gets fire, to counter Black metal's frost. Death metal gets Shadow magic, and fire is NOT their power, they just use torches as part of their rituals to create light... because without light, there is no shadow.

All three of the Ancient ones represent not evil, just the natural cycle. That said, mother nature is a salty cunt.

The shadowy Devourer of Death Metal is actually a god of life, as he embodies consumption. The blackness covers and absorbs all, even light, so it may continue- just as life consumes other life so it may survive. Obviously, he grants shadow magic.

The Frozen End of All things and its Black metal, likewise is the next step in the natural cycle: Death. The warmth of life devoured by the Shadow, leaves only cold flesh, and the chill winds are the power of its worshipers.

The final of the three, the Unquiet Death- Represents not only undeath, but rebirth. Deer eats grass- wolf eats deer- dead wolf nourishes the grasses soil ad infinitum. The Unquiet Death grants his followers control over this, with power of life and undeath.

Many scholars also note, as the cycle of Life-Death-Rebirth that is represented by Death-Black-Doom Metal, so do their names reflect the proceeding God. Black metal follows death metal, though death metal controls darkness. Doom metal follows Black metal, though the doom of death is only temporary to them. Death metal follows Doom metal, though in truth, it is about being alive.

The three Scion-gods of the freemen are not of the natural order. They struggled against the chains of the cycle, and broke free in glorious humanity. They each serve a separate facet of man's desires and do not create a seamless cycle as the Ancient ones do. They represent everything against the Ancient Ones, and while they benefit mankind now, may end up destabilizing the world.

But who cares? They are what keeps the free people of man strong against the dark.

Power Metal, The Strength of light, is the foe of Death Metal's Shadow. Light pierces and banishes the Darkness, and summons storms and lighting to blow away the shadow.

The warmth of the heart of man is Folk metal. It is the comradeship and warmth of the free clans, and intrinsic to the birth of cities. Fire keeps Black Metal's chill at bay.

Last is the wind that runs past the stillness- Speed metal. Man taming the bike-beasts and creating hotrods allowed him to escape Doom Metal's aspect of rebirth. Speed Metal grants powers over avoiding rebirth/undeath through knitting the flesh and repairing machines.

I did this once, wanted to make a setting based off a few metal genres, it got out of control and I'm still writing it all up, but here's the basis:

The far, far northern rim of the world is a jet black, ragged hellscape of crushing silence and monstrous growls that emanate from the air itself. Towering black trees, sky-flung mountains and permafrost. Demons of the most base evil stalk this realm, as well vicious barbarian hordes bent on committing slaughter in the name of the idea of evil. A foul wind blows down from the void here and washes over the land beyond it.

Beyond this, an epic land of mighty oceans, mountains, tundra and warriors and elemental wizards, great keeps of feasting and tales of glory and doom, mighty high kings and sorcerer-lords hail from here, raiding clans who live in ice-castles battle with wandering horrors of the eternal night land of the far north.

Beyond this, a solemn but glorious land of virtuous knights, ancient kings, wizardry, learning, old pagans and mystical beings in the far places. There are dungeons and forgotten keeps, abandoned wizard towers and more from elder empires long forgotten.

Beyond this, a strange land of twisted badlands and deserts where an unearthly drone floats on the air, secret rites are practiced by wizards who indulge in the yellow lotus and monolothic ur-cities jut from the swirling devil-sands.

Beyond this, finally, at the bottom of the world, is where the far northern winds settle and fester eternal, a blood-drenched death labyrinth-temple where rites of desecration are practiced by mad cannibal cults in sweltering underground jungles whose carnivorous plant-life is fed by occult run-off from sacrifices to the blistering sun which scorches the bare stone and carpets of bones from aeons of slaughter.

Black Metal, Viking Metal, Heavy Metal, Doom Metal, Death Metal

Dunno about hair metal, Hair Metal is more suited to a different path, bard is too simple, it neglects what the real backbone of those bands is: wealth, and lots of it, if anything, Hair Bands because of their immensely rich connections to the Glamrock Dynasty would be better suited to something akin to mech pilots. That would play up a more fitting sense of character.

Alternative justification: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHcrrX0dYLo

Ye olde black metal from norway.

But anyway, here's a song in old high german:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCOCiXk6ZMM
The original text is from the 9th century, and it's about Hildebrand, a nobleman, who fought against the huns. He comes home after years of war, only to be confronted by his son, Hadubrand. His son doesn't recognise him, calls him "an old hun", and so on. Old customs demand that they both fight to death over these insults. Hildebrand is torn between fighting his son and honoring the customs of his people, but ultimately fights against Hadubrand. Later songs heavily imply that Hildebrand won, and has slain his son.

Not really. I am just confused by why exactly it's called sludge/Stoner metal when all it really does is sound like very lazy prog rock.

Is that it? Is the reaosn it's called stoner metal is because it's half assed?

I mean the more traditional metal groups clearly have reasons why they have names.

Heavy metal's name comes from the heavy sound of the metalworking industry around Birmingham and the beatnik counterculture to reference heavy as a tune with a slow deep beat.

And as such we get things like Black metal from themes to do with Grim ideologies, Folk metal based on folk myths, Power metal to invoke ideas of Fantasy and energy, and so forth.

You can listen to songs from genres like that and instantly go "That's X metal"

Everything else is pointless labeling.

>What about the mythos surrounding other genres? What about, say, Progressive Metal? I mean, it would obviously be a creation of man, as anything that math-y is a rebellion against the natural order. Would their domain be Logic, as a representation of mathematics?

I am doing a setting that is a metal setting.

Basically it will be made in a way that I consider the only real way to do it. Like this:
1-Look the musical characteristics that form metal genres.
2-Use logic and music and writing and rpg skills to convert those characteristics to place characteristics, races characteristics, classes characteristics.

Its a wip right now (mostly because I need to find the specific characteristics that form each sub-genre), but here are some wip details.

>doom metal
When someone dies (or etc..) in a paradox, people move to ouside of reality.
Imagine an hypotetical setting where, if you do good stuff you go to heaven when you die, but if you kill an powerfull benevolent god you go to hell when you die.
Now someone start to do mind control on this god and tell him to kill people, you kill the god to help people so a good thing that will make you go to heaven but end killing the god that will make you go to hell. This paradox make the persn leave the reality when it dies.
People can make pact with those guys, unlike 3.5 binder class, you will receive only spells that dont cost mana to use.
Spells are simple stuff, they wont make you poisoned, frozen, give you a headache at the same time. But will be powerfull
The time needed to cast will be huge, but their duration will be huge, and they wont magically appear at the moment you finish casting it, they will start small and gradually increase in power, spells will also always hit as long you finish casting it. The same apply for the pacts (long duration, long time needed to cast gradually get new spells to use...)

The after some amount of time, guys that made the pacts will start to get depressive, this happens because the pacts know that this is way to stay real.
The songs are the spells you get with the pact, the band is the pact, the album are the group of spells you get at the same time (remember you dont get all spells at same moment the pact start, you gradually get more and more spells)

Anyway this is all based on the characteristics that form doom metal.

Now I dont know what each doom meta sub-genre would be, predidge like classes, starting templates.....?
>black metal
Will be basically some sort of cleric that worship the devils and get spells from that, unlike the binder they do stuff to continue getting spells, dont know more specific datails.

>electronic metal (or industrial metal or whateaver its called)
basically a the medieval *punk class.

I dont know the others because I need to find the specific list of characteristics that form the genres (and also their sub-genres)

The three mountain vampires, they got a contract with the lords of hell and now protect the flamming mace of destruction. They entered the contract ages ago because it promissed eternal youth and wealth, but now they are eternally locked into the isle of the burning sun, where skeleton samurais fly old airplanes and attack people by crashing the thing like drop pods before charging with rusted, yet sharp, katanas. Your quest is to go there, fight the samurais, kill the vampires (or take then to your women hoard you maintain over your mamooth mount) and then steal the mace of destruction, a big fucking tetsubo like bat with spiky studs all over it.

You just take something, and throw as much cheese and awesome into it you can. It doesnt need to make much sense, as long as its cool. Just... remember when you were a kid and the campaign of awesome will come easily.

As an example, last play with my little 6 yo sister was:

A giant princess in a horseless carriage and her guard, an orc with a raygun riding a flying motorcicle needed to leave the body of the princess deceased husband, a pirate skeleton, into the mound of resting, where the dead sleep. (She came with the name)

But then, a inteliggent dinossaur stopped the procession and fought for the body, snatching it fromt eh hands ofthe princess and turning it into a skeleton king, who rode a dragon against the princess castle in revenge for his own death.

So now, the princess and the orc need to go to the mound of resting, rest there and then pass the red mountain to go back to the castle.

The moment of glory was when the orc dude motorcicle broke because of a dragon, and he hold ground in the red mountain using his destroyed vehicle as an barricade shooting dragonmen holding clubs while the princess tried to repair the thing up.

Just throw common sense away and do what you think its cool.
