Good changes to Holo. Normalized the timing of things and made the normal use case for it a -3 debuff to the enemy (because unless you make the choice obvious, no one is taking 66% odds of failure in order to eat a normal roll).
Surprise shot is a great debuff to have since it requires no additional setup. And with Holo2 regenerating automatically when out of LoF it suddenly became pretty damn order efficient as well.

There's no real difference if they delay their ARO and you shoot first. You get surprise shot either way. They can't shoot first until you're discovered with cybermask, and they probably won't shoot first with holo2 since they're likely to hit the wrong one.
As for TO camo, the only advantage an impersonation-2 marker has over a TO marker is that it can't be intuitively attacked. It's -6 to WIL rolls to discover a TO unit, and only normal WIL rolls for impersonators.

I'm not entirely sure how that works in regard to the cybermasked unit shooting first, though. The RAW states that the impersonation state is canceled when the impersonator declares surprise shot, but I don't know exactly that is meant to be interpreted.

If I remember NFB rules correctly, when first NFB thing ends - the second doesn't turn on until action fully resolves. So when your Cybermask fail, ODD kicks in only next order.

Cybermask still provides a good amount of protection in reactive, allows you to stealthily move up while avoiding deployables and AROs, and gets you surprise shot for hacking.

There's p2w in Infinity as well with certain spam lists that can fuck over newbies.
However, besides things that tend to hurt newbies, the game is pretty fair. But the learning curve is REALLY high, and even after you've got the basic game down, there's a lot of special rules to figure out. The game comes with a free rules wiki and online army builder for support with that, though.
Some models are still old and terrible sculpts, but most of the worst have been phased out. Still, some starter boxes suffer like JSA.
Models themselves are individually pricey, but you need less of them to play a full game. However, you'll need a lot of terrain to run a game. There's cheap papercraft kits but it can run expensive for MDF terrain.

I had chimera + 3pups, full link of riot grrls (before they were good) custodier Lt, avicenna and 2 tsyklon sputniks

Having ODD on top of that would cause enemies to Discover at -6 WIP. And they might be trying to argue that enemies ARO at -6 plus -3 for Surprise Shot for a total of -9 by having both at once.

I recently picked up the USAriadna Army box and the Vanilla Ariadna starter pack. My friend just picked up the Aleph starter pack. Do you guys have any ideas for building an Ariadna list from what I have that would be fun and fair to go up against the Aleph Starter? Our goal is to get our Magic and DnD friends into Infinity so some good starter games would be helpful.

Remind him that Keisotsu aren't very good and that dropping an Oniwaban/kitsune or Saito for a Haramaki link + kempeitai is a much better idea.

As of HSN3, should the rumors prove to be true, Bakunin Sectorial with Moira Link with possibility of Kusanagi and/or Revered Healer, Custodier Haris, Sin-Eaters, REMs as needed.
Kind of sucky and limited, though. Throw in some Prowlers and Zeroes if you have the points for them, and possibly Chimera.
But, in all honestly, it'll limit your options even worse and be a huge liability against MSV, even with lots of Repeaters and White Noise. You're better off just having some key Observance troops and depending on the wider range of Bakunin toys than focusing solely on Observance troops.

Just take lots of Moiras? Or play Bakunin for Moira links. It should be noted, however, that Riot Grrls are better in many ways; Moiras are strong against nooby armies, but if your enemy is carrying MSV or lots of templates (and solid lists will definitely have those), those ladies are going to go down very, very quickly. Moiras have 0 BTS, and only 3 ARM with 1 W and are pretty pricey at the mid-30 point range. that powerful -6 from ODD is mitigated by MSV or direct templates.

Observance player here:
Sin Eaters and Custodiers will be your best friends. One Sin-eater is basically mandatory if you play Observance, two is better. The Mk12 is a lovely gun which I cannot recommend enough. 0SWC, awesome. HMG is also great.
Costodier with a marker is incredible for infuriating the enemy. The utility provided by the HD+ is staggering.
The Healer is the only one without ODD, which is quite crappy. Expect her to be dodging a lot of bullets. Bring one, don't bother with any more.
Kusanagi is nasty and has a gun for most situations. She's the obvious Lt and quite squishy, as such most opponents will be gunning for her, so keep her safe. A Moira link with her in it is the default.
The Moiras overall have a very decent gun in the multi-rifle. ODD is good, but won't hold out forever, so you better learn to pick your battles. Ignore you various CCWs, you do NOT want to actually engage anything in melee unless it's a last resort or some chaff. Instead stay at range and engage in shooting matches.
