With gnolls, harpies, and insect races being a favorite among civ quest voting, it made me wonder:

What other animals could be made into a race without being furry bullshit, and bring something more to the table without being another "folk"?

Dolphins
Mantas
Octopuses
Tardigrada

Dinosaur folk.

Would be interesting to make a less human giant race. Raptor people work too, but they might end up being too much like gnolls or lizardmen. Maybe they could be really intelligent, cooperative, but also tribal and fractious.

Naked mole-rats.

They look bisarre, their nakedness would give them a good reason to actually wear clothes. Due to their eusocial nature their societies would evolve some cool caste-states which would be biologically enforced.
Their nature would mean that they would live in exotic underground cities in dangerous and probably sparsely populated regions.

Oh, and they lack pain sensivity in their skin, which for fantasy reasons could be extended to a general lack of pain which would make them dangerous opponents in battle.

To play on the concept of non-humanoid giants, how about intelligent giant squids? Someone should start a game based on this thread though, as it gets boring waiting for Snow.

I mean, that's basically just D&D Krakens. At least in pre-5e.

I'm also fond of elephant people.
>>
>>46373378

Okay, that art won me over.
>>
>>46373378
Aren't those Gnolls though?
>>
>>46373896

Gnolls are (though typically hyenas) a name given to any carnivorous humanoid. I don't think boar-folk would be called that.
>>
>>46373926
Ah fair enough. I'm only familiar with Gnolls through WoW, where they tend to have a very boar-styled aesthetic going on, in addition to hyena aspects.

In truth I just presumed a Gnoll was any animal you'd meet in Australia mixed with a human.
>>
>>46373480
Same here.

Also I guess a boarmen society would be quite interesting as it would be something like a tribal matriarchy in which the adult males goes on pilgrimage to other tribes every mating season. When they reach another tribe they battle all the other males who also made their pilgrimage to it and the winner gets the right to breed with the women of the tribe.

The piglets that are born would have to face harsh competition from their siblings each meal for the nipple that gives off most milk since the one that gets to suckle it the most grows stronger than its siblings and develops faster.

As such the boarmen would from birth be highly competitive and fierce. Given that pigs are intelligent animals boarmen would probably also develop somewhat advanced societies if they ever outgrew their tribalism or got a leader that could forcefully concentrate a large number of tribes under her dominion. Perhaps this could then evolve into something similar to the historical Holy Roman Empire, with an empress that rules over a multitude of smaller reasonably self governing states that are atleast in theory united into one empire.

(yes, I know the last one wasn't an actual pig)

So do insect and slime civs technically, and those go perfectly fine.

I imagine it would be different kinds of boars just like there are different human ethnicities.

Wild boar (Sus Scrofa).
It's subspecies could give it some regional variance and flavour.

Microbial colonies.
In Dead Space, highest-tier Necromorphs were sentient.

Come on it was railroad as fuck to the point where you only had one road to walk on.

There were already plenty open world games out there to compete with it.

It still has one of the best combat systems among RPGs so i'd love to see a new game based on it but with a large open world like the ones in the ES games.

Straight up birds! There are a large variety of visual aesthetics one could go with, far more numerous than differing human/elf subtypes and cultures. I feel that they could be really versatile. Anywhere from aloof wisemen, to imperialistic forces.
>>
>>46373207
Tg had a thread a long time ago about Chinese boar people. Used their rice paddies to cool down frequently.

Were miserable to try and kill because of 3-4 inches of subcutaneous fat in 'fighting seasons'
>>
>>46373993
Gnolls in wow are hyena-like, you may be confusing gnoll with quillboar
>>
>>46376111
Being railroad-y is fine so long as it's a fun rail road.
>>
Crocodilians, though I think more along the lines of intelligent animal than straight up humanoid because of the long snout most of them have.

Maybe have them never fully erect, kind of hunched over, moving around on all fours, and then standing bipedal to do fine manipulation.
>>
>>46381926
Crocs walking like gorillas?
>>
>>46382007
I don't really know, that's the problem.

Maybe kind of like a hunchback with the balance being made up by their tails.

Or just plain old crocodiles that walk like normal but get up in a hunched over bipedal position for things like cooking or any of the trade skills.

They're just too damn long.

Any, all, and none.

Look, your definition of "furry bullshit" is very vague and gets applies pretty randomly. Are werewolves furry bullshit? I've seen lots of people say yes and lots of people say no. I've heard lots of people claim gnolls to be furry bullshit. The distinction seems random and usually just to piss people off.

What makes a good race depends a lot on how involved the thought process is in their conception and implementation. If I make a bunch of snakefolk that are just muscular and scaly, then they probably aren't worth the paragraph they're written on. But if I give them an Egyptian society, have them consider undead the divine right to the followers of Ra, and consider poison just another weapon for war/hunting like a bow, then they're an interesting race to inhabit the world.

For personal preferences, I think that rats and frogs tend to make the most interesting humanoids. Just don't turn your frogs into WoW Murloc or D&D Slaad and give the rats something more than "sneaky little villains".
>>
>>46383598
Pretty sure that with furry bullshit he means fapbait, waifubait and/or humans with some animalistic feautures.
You know, the whole furry thing.

People fap to anything on the internet.
The "whole furry thing" is mostly just people making up accusations wherever they want.

Humans with some animalistic features is just anime, and that gets defended as not furry as much as it gets accused.
>>
>>46383811
Eh, in animu's defense, some Elves in Nordic mythology were described as having "cow tails" or "cat-like ears".

Y'all suck. At least I see some cephalopods here. I'd like to think of them similar to illithids minus the brain stuff. Super clever, probably stealthy, morally ambiguous (at least to us air breathers). Also, cross dressing.

What about a Baku civ, where you play as a race of semi-real tapir spirits that cross from the real world to a dream world to eat nightmares
>>
>>46379414
Could you be more specific? Just suggesting birds is the same as suggesting that mammals could be turned into some cool fantasy races.

Magic the Gathering has an elephant-people race called the Loxodon if that helps. They're pretty cool.

As an example let's do an emu-society. Let's call the species Emuai

Their society would be a matriarchial warlike nomadic one located in a vast varm steppeland. Their type of warfare would be centered around speedily manouvers and furious charges followed up by prolonged melee in which they bite and kick. They are distinguised from the traditional steppe warrior by their lack of archery, as the emuais arms are to weak to handle a bow to any effect. Due to this lack of arm strength they would probably be highly depended on other species for necessary goods and eguipment such as armour as they wouldn't be able to craft things themselves if it requires somewhat heavy handywork. This would suggest that they would sell out their services as mercenaries in exchange for the needed commodities. The fiercest and most experienced emuais could be covered from head to toe in chainmail or plate and thus act on the battlefield in a similar way that cataphracts or knights of real history did.

Relationship wise the traditional family structure in an emuai society would probably be that of short term polygamous marriages with one female and two or more males that last untill the next mating season. The purpose of a marriage would be to raise children, for which the male is responsible, while the female act as the breadwinner by partaking in raids against hostile tribes or serving as a mercenary for some foreign state. When the children reach the age of adulthood the marriage between the female and that particular male is disbanded at which time other females start to compete for the right to marry the now bachelor male.
