You are Takashi Wakui, a sixteen year old Japanese high school student. In your world, half of humanity possesses a Persona—the corporeal manifestation of one’s personality as a supernatural entity. You had been an unlucky ordinary at first, lacking the potential to summon your Persona. Then the application AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. It sucked you into the nightmarish realm of the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and awakened your Persona in the process.
You are now the Wild Card of the 22nd Century. You possess the Fool Arcana, giving you the power to draw strength from bonds and wield multiple Personas at once. Already this places you in great danger, as the Fool Arcana is seen as an impossibility by the common masses. Revealing your newfound power to the common world would immediately land your head on a dissection table. To make matters worse, you and several others have been cursed as the Void’s Chosen, fated to traverse the wastelands of the Blackened Void until the end of the game. When you entered the Blackened Void to take care of the max-priority notification, you hadn’t been sure what to expect. You made a few guesses: mapping out more of the city, facing down a powerful Shadow boss, perhaps even something to do with the entrance of the Forlorn Abyss. Get in, punch the enemy until it dissipated and return home triumphant with Macca in your wallet and Build EXP stored in the safehouse computer.
Not this. You wouldn’t have predicted this in a million years.
Chikashi, or rather the monster that has assimilated itself within the boy’s body, rears itself up. The tar-black monstrous mass sways about in the cold air like a demonic flag. Claws burst free from muscular flesh and it gnashes its teeth, revealing the sticky crimson interiors of its drool-infested maw. It rumbles forward, each step with the impact of a thunderclap.
An immense killing intent worms through the distance separating you and it. It buries your senses beneath a grave of fear and paralysis. You stand in your spot, frozen like a frigid sculpture. Your vision has collapsed into a tunnel aimed squarely at the abomination, every hair on your body is standing on end and liquid ice has replaced the blood running through it veins.
The abomination eyes each one of your fellow Players, growling. It catches a glimpse of you and roars, scattering dust and shaking the remnants of the bridge.
Then, as if switches are collectively flipped within your heads, your team springs to action.
“Rakukaja!” Celeste screams. With the desperate speed of a man teetering at death’s door, she whips out the Magician’s card and slices it in half with her rapier. Sati explodes out of a pillar of flame, her gloved hands forming a cross against her ghostly chest. “Rakukaja, Rakukaja, RAKUKAJA!”
BOSS FIGHT
Celeste’s last cry almost drowns out the howls of the abomination. Grey aura surrounds you, stiffening your skin. At the forefront of your mind, the undead bullfighter Matador clacks his bony jaw and waves the red cloth. Auto-Sukukaja takes hold and your feel your body instantly become lighter.
“Sukukaja!” Cast the buffs. Act fast, lest your team perish. All warriors who have fought Shadows throughout humanity’s bloody history have been taught similar mantras. Never before have you been so glad to related to an Anti-Shadow Operative.
The abomination tips its head back and spits. From its gaping jowls come forth a dark miasma. It surrounds the entire area like a noxious gas. Escape via magic is now impossible. Behind you, crouched by the side of a disused van, Fumika grits her teeth.
Even without summoning Moros, she knows that analyzing that creature would be difficult. Not only did it possess a magical signature utterly alien to her, it was also emitting an interference that scrambled Moros’s sensors. It would take twice…no, maybe even thrice as long to scan it compared to a regular Shadow. Taking into account the first impression of the abomination’s raw power, then adding in the fact that she needed to be immobile when performing analysis, your Spotter comes to the conclusion that the odds are greatly stacked against her, and by extension the rest of her team.
She balances the card of the Hermit in her palm. Fumika Shibuya did not survive three years of being a freelance mercenary by giving into fear. Narrowing her dark eyes at the beast, as if to drive a bullet into its heart, she steels herself to act.

“No you don’t!” A fireball sails through the air and hits the abomination square in the chest. Tar-colored skin burns and a screech of pain is uttered. Celeste snaps her fingers again and prepares to summon another flame.
The abomination growls and focuses its attention towards her. Then, it notices you standing next to her. In an action so deliberate it could not possibly be coincidence, it lifts up its claw and brings it crashing down upon you, like a steel hammer preparing to crush a nail.

Had you been half a second slower, the gigantic, black claw would have shred your body to pieces, leaving nothing behind but a ghastly pile of flesh, blood and bone shards. Thus, it is very fortunate that you manage to switch to the Strength Arcana and call forth the Persona within.
“Oni!”
The crimson-skinned demon howls and slams its club against the claw, grinding it to a halt. Pressure slams into your back as the force pushing against the Persona is transferred towards you. You dig in your heels, spit out a curse word and shove every ounce of your strength back towards Oni. His ethereal visage is starting to crackle, lines and patches of static flashing between solid demonic flesh and deep blue robes. The abomination is relentless. It wants you, to rip off your limbs, to bite through your chest, to drain every drop of blood, to squeeze your heart to a tiny blackened lump. Every second that passes by when you look towards the monster is like gazing into a book with pages stitched from raw bloodlust.
Then, Oni screams and, with an almighty shove that sends pain shrieking through your arms, forces the abomination back. He then leaps forward and unleashes a blow with the iron club, slicing a deep gash into the abomination’s side. Thick, purple blood leaks from the wound, spraying all over the concrete bridge like a blast of foul paint. Agonized, the abomination thrashes around, its limbs scraping and bashing into debris and junk scattered across the makeshift battlefield.
“Rakunda!” A pale, grey aura drains the abomination off its defense.
“Out of the fucking way!”
You dodge to the right, and see Ubelluris charging towards the abomination. It smashes its fists down on the abomination, knocking it. It responds by curling one of its limbs around the stone god’s neck. A fireball is soon to remove that and Ubelluris stumbles back, almost collapsing on its behind.
“Careful, dammit!” Akikazu shouts, running up to you.
“I should say the same to you!” Celeste says. “Takashi-kun, are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m okay.” You say, stepping backwards, recalling Oni. “But Jesus Christ, I can’t believe this is what Chikashi turned into. Is he even human any more?”
“The hell are you saying? Obviously fucking not!” Akikazu heaves up his hammer and snarls. “Less talking, more fighting. Fumika, how long until your pet gets here?”
“Thirty more seconds!” Fumika calls, not even opening her eyes.

“Hama!” Light sigils form around the monster and explode. Yet, it doesn’t seem any the least blinded. Guess it really doesn’t have eyes, then. You charge up mana in your legs and dash towards it, evading, jumping and ducking beneath its swings.

The one-eyed demon blacksmith jumps out of the card of the Fool and leaps towards the abomination, hammer posed for a perfect strike.

Then, the abomination headbutts you. Sukukaja has lifted your agility to the point where the side of its head barely grazes past yours. But, damage is damage. You reel backwards, pawing at the bleeding wound on your forehead. Dia passes through your bloodied hands and takes care of it.
“Hama!”
“Cruel Attack!”
Never leave your neck outstretched. If Shadows could learn this tip, then humanity’s job would become three times as hard. Whatever the abomination is, it is not particular intelligent. Holy light from Celeste sears it and Akikazu's hammer tears through its flesh. And just when you think things couldn’t get any worse for it…
“Move, all of you!”
You turn around at the sound of Fumika's voice, then quickly obey. A bouncing mass of muscle and white outlines is barreling down the remains of the bridge towards the abomination, knocking away concrete chunks as if they were toy blocks. 114, the beast of Area 019, bounds on four legs and leaps towards the abomination. Its fangs sink into the abomination’s shoulders, causing it to scream and scream. An otherworldly sound, as if chanted by a thousand sinners ready to be thrown into the deepest level of hell.
114, ignoring it, rips its teeth out and vomits bile all over the abomination. The glowing green muck spreads across the tar-colored skin like a rapidly growing spider web. The flesh burns, it weeps and foul, acrid runoff is all it’s rewarded with. You almost feel sorry for it, seeing the way the abomination is howling and flailing around. 114 definitely isn’t, for it continues to assault the abomination with scratches, tears and bites that could rip the torso off a solider.
“Beginning analysis…” Fumika says, summoning Moros. “Scanning for innate affinities…”

114 roars. The brilliance that all white phantoms are summoned with is vanishing bit by bit. The abomination seems to understand this. You can almost picture a smug, insane smile on its features. It leans forward and wraps its limbs around 114’s body, putting it in a stranglehold. The disintegration accelerates. An inky blackness spreads from the main body, sliding across 114’s scales, tearing off the mana from within, chunk by chunk. 114 struggles and beats against the abomination, driving it downwards. Then, with its head almost fully transparent, it sinks its fangs once more into the neck.
It chews down, and devours a wad of flesh from the abomination.
The wail that follows could’ve shattered all the windows in your academy. An orange aura covers it. A Rebellion spell.
Beneath both, within the concrete, stone shifts and cracks spread.

It's also why it's probably going right for us. We are a wildcard with a WHOLE lot of mana for it to eat along with personas. While it might hate us, we are probably the tastiest thing in the world for him. We CANNOT let it get close to anyone. Even Number 114 must back off and focus on long range attacks once we help him. If we blow the bridge, we could rain attacks on him as well.

“White phantoms are outside permanent death. If 114’s phantom disappears, it won’t mean it has died.” Fumika explains. “Secondly, 114 obeys me. If I tell it to escape, it will. Thirdly, we almost out of time. Act, both of you.”
“If this kills us I’m coming back to haunt you, got it?” Akikazu snarls, reaching for the pin.
“I’ll commit suicide first, then.” You retort.
“Good luck, boys. I’ll see what I can do in the meantime.” Celeste says, focusing mana in her palms. “Agilao!”
She aims and launches yet another fireball at the abomination. It hits it in the head, distracting it for the briefest of seconds.
You and Akikazu pull out the pins.

The grenades rumble in your palms. You and Akikazu hurl them towards the abomination. They lan squarely at its feet, which have been surrounded by the foul blackness. At the same time, 114 tears itself away from the body and gallops back to Fumika, hissing at everything and everyone in the vicinity.
Three seconds, two seconds, one second of beeping and the explosion hits. Bits of concrete and metal shards are sent spiralling into the distance, coming to a halt against building walls and cracked pavements. The majority of the bridge, however, is sent tumbling downwards towards the road below. With its legs stunned, all the abomination can do is attempt to grab on to the overpass edge with its sharp claws.

At the back, Fumika gestures towards 114.
“Fire acid down at your opponent.”
114 grumbles in indignation, or that’s what you think it does. It’s hard to tell the intentions behind the creature's ‘voice’. Every sound from its jaws could wet the undergarments of an entire kindergarten’s worth of schoolchildren. To emphasize its protest, 114 opens its mouth and rolls out a sticky green tongue.
Fumika glares. “Don’t look at me like that. Do as I tell you.”
114 growls again, before limping back to the edge of the bridge like a wounded puppy. It opens its gaping mouth, then lets loose a steady stream of acidic waste that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a sewer plant. It’s almost comical, the way it glops down twardso the abomination like a blast of fecal manner from the world’s worst bathroom tap.
“Attack!” You yell. You, Celeste and Akikazu rush over to the edge and begin firing spells at fast as you can muster.
“Agilao, Hama!”
“Magaru! Zionga!”
“Tera! Tera Oh, fuck this. I’m going to throw this bit of concrete. Any objections?”
Blasts of hot flame, scythes of wind, lightning bolts, holy sigils and out-of-place blocks of rubble pelt the abomination, a hailstorm of Persona attacks that burn, shock, slice and crush. Caught between a metaphorical rock and a wall of bile, all the abomination can do is lie there and take it.
Like a bitch, part of you speaks up. It is soon quietened, replaced by the part that is wondering if you could somehow send Matador down there and stab the monster full of holes with the newly acquired Anadalucia skill, without breaking your legs in the process.
The abomination’s body trembles. It rises back up again, twisting and flailing around in an effort to regain its balance. Its knees, half submerged in the foul blackness, bend.
It bellows for the umpteenth time that day.
Then, it jumps.
“Takashi-kun, Akikazu, move!”
It sails through the dusty air and lands back on the ruined bridge, just as you retreat. The tremor from the impact almost knocks all of your team off balance.
You notice that a powerful aura, similar in color and shape to the miasma is used to seal off the exits’ is swirling around its body.
“Ah shit…” You hear yourself mutter. Celeste shoves a bunch of lollies into her mouth and Akikazu spits on the ground. “I think we just pissed it off…”
“Skills are Mamudo, Mudoon, Rebellion, Mute Gaze and…” Fumika mutters, eyes still closed.
A spell is cast. A suffocating blue power grasps you. Ice strangles your nerves and you feel yourself going down on your knees. Out of the corner of your eyes, your friends are suffering the same.
