Rogue Trader: The Movie

I actually liked this movie. I don't get why it gets so much hate. I mean, it's not Chicken Little, but it's definitely no Lion King either. I'd put it in the same ballpark as Lilo and Stitch.
>>
>>46063842
Likewise.

It's a little trope-y, but it was fun as far as kids movies go and had great art direction. Plus Kida is one of the hottest Disney princesses.

It also got flak for being rather similar to a Japanese anime from 1990 that also featured a roughly turn-of-the-century setting starring a reddish brown-haired, nerdy protagonist with a bow tie and big round glasses who takes a trip on an advanced submarine captained by a bitter older man and a blonde woman as the first officer who has a little too close of a relation with the captain.
It also features a love interest who is brown-skinned with odd-colored hair and greenish eyes. Who wears a midriff revealing outfit that consists of a bandeau and a split-leg skirt.
Also a magical, glowing blue gem that also happens to be a key to the power of the ancient city of Atlantis.
Incidentally, the girl also happens to be the princess of the place.
Oh, and both have a villain who covets the ancient power of Atlantis for use in military conquest, but is ultimately undone by being turned to mineral by the very power he sought to control.

It's an interesting one. The story was originally conceived by Hayao Miyazaki in the early 70s, but it was shelved by the studio he was working for. He went on to recycle his concept of "two orphans travel the world having adventures" in Future Boy Conan and the concept of "glowing blue necklace is key to ancient power" in Laputa.
Around 1989, TV studio NHK picked up the story concept and hired studio Gainax to adapt it.
Character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was originally slated to direct, but after completing the first episode, he decided he couldn't handle the stress and handed the show off to his buddy Hideaki Anno.
The show originally supposed to only be 26 episodes, but it was so popular that NHK started demanding even more episodes to keep it running longer. Gainax couldn't keep up with the demand and so had to outsource a couple of story arcs to Korea after episode 21. These are the infamous Island and Africa arcs, where the animation and art quality take a huge nosedive.
There are some important story bits on the Island, so they shouldn't be skipped. Especially the Red Noah segments that actually explain the actual Secret of the Blue Water. The African Village episodes, 32 and 33 are complete dogshit but set up an important plot point later, so sadly, you can't skip those either. At least not the first time you watch.
If you've seen Eva, this was an earlier show made by the same team so you'll see a lot of similarities, especially towards the end where Anno decides to go balls out crazy.
>>

It was a Disney movie that wasn't loaded with singing and didn't feature a princess in the Disney sense.

http://www.vice.com/read/the-berensteain-bears-conspiracy-theory-that-has-convinced-the-internet-there-are-parallel-universes

In the true timeline, Anastasia is Disney and Treasure Planet is from an independent studio. But we've been drawn into the evil mirror universe.
>>
>>46064912
Dodger was voiced by Billy Joel.
You didn't know that?
>>
>>46064923
No, it's really not.
Anastasia was what happened when Don Bluth decided "Fuck it, I can't beat Disney by doing my own thing, I'll just do exactly what they do instead!"
Treasure Planet was Disney having some balls and trying out something new.
It happens occasionally, though it's less likely now that they have all these sub-companies under them.

>>46064490
Its heavily implied by Nemo's appearance in The Mysterious Island that he was an Indian Prince - not black but he probably wasn't european.
>>
>>46063842
It's one of my favorites, but when I re-watched it after several years I could see why it did poorly. The fact that they were forced to change the prologue from the vikings being massacred by the leviathan to the sinking of Atlantis really badly screwed up the plot. The stuff about rediscovering Atlantis's culture and their degeneration makes no sense in the context of the eternal-ish youth and everyone having been there when it sank.
>>
>>46065009
I know. Indian =/= black. At all. In any way. It just really scrambles my eggs when people mix races around, especially when the race is already hugely unrepresented.
>>
>>46065009
In later editions of 20,000 Leagues, Verne added a bit where Nemo rescues an Indian pearl diver and admits to Arronax he is Indian, too.
Of course, he's also described in the book as being very pale, clean-shaven and having very wide-set eyes.
>>
>>46065115
>being very pale,
Well, living in a fucking submarine will do that to anybody that isn't Seal levels of black (and nobody is blacker than Seal). Even an American Indian or Asian Indian would be quite pale with little to no sun exposure (just not as pale as a European with no sun exposure).

It is also worth mentioning that "paleness" isn't just your skin color, but a wide variety of other, subtle health cues that the body picks up on - the prevalence of veins throughout the body, eye color (cornea and gel), teeth and gum color, hair color and visible texture, the color of the hands, skin homogeneity, etc. Basically, the term "pale," up until recent times, was much more a descriptor of health than of natural color (the term for natural whiteness was "fair," white indicated pale skin but with generally other healthy features).

Not trying to nitpick, just pointing out that the context of the time means the two aren't exclusive in the slightest.
>>
>>46065396
Also, he could be commenting on how pale he is comparatively. There are tons of pale Indian people, relatively speaking.
>>
>>46065072
>especially when the race is already hugely unrepresented.

Fun fact about this movie. It was actually supposed to be a trilogy. All of the preplanning and writing in fact assumed it was going to be made as a trilogy....But Disney chickened the fuck out and had them change it to a single movie. Which really hurt the pacing.

The fist movie was going to all be about the setup. Milo, the Shepherds Journal, the Submarine and the Crew.
The second movie was going to take place after the sub was thrashed and the group began trekking the underground in search of Atlantis.

The Third Movie was going to handle the actual city of Atlantis and the final act stuff.

Would have been glorious.

Atlantis isn't really a straight rip-off like The Lion King.
Also it's not like the fact that american movie makers rip off japanese movies and anime is such a big secret.

The only reason it's not widely known is that americans are blissfully ignorant of foreign countries and delude themselves by believing they have any culture of their own.

It would have been terribly easy to foreshadow it similar to how the movie did too. It's a shame, because the Disney cartoons around that period had a shared universe, if a bit wonky, like Aladdin meeting Hercules. So adding Atlantis to the mix that would also connect Gargoyles with Tarzan (and hell, maybe even Hercules, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid, considering the scope the proposed Atlantis show would've covered).
>>
>>46080210

Those scenes with hades and Jafar were fucking amazing.
>>

How would that even work? Hercules predated Islam by two millennia.

Hercules's Hades

Gaaaaaaaah the real Hades wasn't a villain and people always portray him wrong. The REAL Hades is already cool enough!

Never fails, every time. People living in their "Or" world.

Well, 1001 Nights is a bit wonky in that aspect.
A lot of the tales are set "long, long ago" or in some weird places (for example, Alladin is actually set in China) and you get tons of sex and stuff.
On the other hand, there are plenty of passages going "Oh, you can't harm me, Djinn, for there is power only in Allah and Muhammad is his phrophet".
I guess it's a case of the author/collector covering his backside.

>>46065683

A movie that was not dubbed, not in English, and not available to casual western audiences. Gee, I wonder why nobody cared when Disney made a big-budget rip-off of this series.
>>
>>46071760

Holy fuck I can see it so clearly. The simplicity of two-tone high-contrast lighting set against features and a few simple lines and shapes that imply much greater detail than they reveal. It's an image straight out of any Mike Mignola comic.
>>
>>46080428
>>46080650
Many of the stories in the 1001 Nights comes from Pre-Islamic Persian folklore, so its not all that far-fetched.

I want to know what demon Mignola made a pact with to be so damn good at design. My only gripe with his art is that you have to slow down when reading it or you can't really figure out what's going on. Which isn't really a bad thing, since you then get to enjoy it for longer.

Screw-On Head is so good, I think it's probably one of my favorite adaptations of a comic book. It's such a shame it didn't get picked up for a full season.

Maybe for the movies after the first, though I'd rate those as shittier, but the first one was far better than Atlantis. Plus the tv show was great too.

The movie was based on a Korean comic.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priest_(manhwa)

And it really would have been better if it had just been entirely animated like the intro scene was.
Or at least had focused more on Karl Urban chewing the fuck out of the scenery.

Dredd is great and I love that Urban was such a fan of Dredd that he wouldn't take the part if they showed Dredd's face.
>>
>>46085235
My favorite part of that movie is how fucking realistic the gun fights where.

The way the judges fought just felt so fucking perfect for the kind of job they do.

>>46085333
Stallone tried to do the same thing, in his defense, but execs refused since they were banking on his star power.
>>
>>46085501
>but execs refused since they were banking on his star power.
Yeah. The new Dredd producers wanted a B-list star who would be willing to work without showing their face. They stumbled across Urban who would only do it under that same condition.
It was just the right combination of the right people coming together and it's sad that it never made enough to get a sequel started.

Especially since they were planning to bring Judge mother fucking Death in if they got a sequel.

I liked the movie up until they actually got to Atlantis. The journey to Atlantis was an awesome pulp adventure story. Then they get there and it turns into a shitty romance story.
>>
>>46087022
The problem with the Dark Judges is the fact that they are so over the top.
Don't get me wrong, Judge Motherfucking Death is my favorite comic villian of all time, but he wouldn't translate well onto the big screen.

It's just like the Angel Gang in the Stallone movie, Mean Machine is the only one of the bunch that can be portrayed in the gritty style of the Urban Dredd, and even that's a stretch.

If the Dark Judges were ever to be put to film, I'd rather they'd be riduclous, insane, and 100% true to the comics.
