Hello /tg/, and welcome to a new Evolution Quest game!

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic. Have fun, make it weird, but keep it realistic.
• Every now and then, I'll make a post detailing some major event in the climate of the planet.
• Have fun

Our setting is an unnamed planet, primarily covered by water. The only surface of the planet are the arctic deserts in the poles, and a single large rocky outcrop in the center, formed by minor volcanic activity.

Flek.png

The Flek is a species of cephalopod, moving around with two strong tentacles, mainly used for locomotion. They have a filtration system on the front of their bodies, which they use to suck up organic material and water. They digest the organic material, and expel the water, along with any waste products, out of their backside between their tentacles, which provides a secondary source of locomotion. They are omnivorous, who seek out their prey. They navigate by sensing electrical currents in the water, but lack other sensory organs. They reproduce in egg clutches via external fertilization

The Krass is a species of small annelid, moving around via paristalsis, as well as wiggling through the water. They have one large mouth at their very front, which they use to latch onto their prey. They then proceed to spit digestive acids onto their prey, predigesting it before sucking the slurry up. They are carnivorous, who seek out their prey, but their larval state is herbivorous. They navigate via a strong sense of smell, but lack other sensory organs. They reproduce via external reproduction, which offspring then live as tiny plankton-like organisms, latching onto vegetation, before metamorphasizing into their adult forms.

Our last fauna is the Nobb. The Nobb is a species of large gastropod, crawling slowly along the ocean floor. They have several small mouths along the bottom of their body, which have radula to scoop organic material from the ocean's floor into their mouths. They have a foot at their rear, to push sediment away from them, propelling them slowly but steadily forwards. They navigate via a sense of vibration, but lack other sensory organs. They are omnivorous, who scavenge the ocean's floor for food. They reproduce via sexual reproduction, where the male mounts the female to inseminate her. The female then mounts the male to lay their eggs atop him, which become stuck to his back due to the female's very sticky birthing fluids.

The Bopshroom is a species of fungus, which latch itself onto the ocean's floor. It absorbs nutrients from the soil, and spreads quickly by releasing spores into the water, which settle and grow quickly into adult Bopshrooms. They are edible to the Nobb, but poisonous to the Flek and the Larval Krass.

The Shoshweed is a species of macoscopic algae, which latch itself onto the ocean's floor. It absorbs nutrients via rudimentary chemosynthesis. It spreads slowly and reproduces via budding, as a "branch" from a Shoshweed, if it finds fertile soil, grows into a brand new Shoshweed. They are edible to all herbivores.

the bananaweed has grown a thin layer of slime around it's exterior which is also mildly toxic, This toxin however actually is loosly attached to the plat at a microscopic level and allows it to capture nutrients from the seawater more efficently, its root network has atrophied mildly. this change was brought on by an inefficiency in it's photosynthesis due to new coloration via random mutation by an interaction cause from the poison production and chlorophyll coloration being controlled by the same strand of DNA.

This also allows the Bopshroom to resettle in new areas if the previous area becomes devoid of resources, taking its symbiotic Krass and their larvae with it.

the slime of the bananweed was an issue for several generations until the spores adapted. Instead of using the water currents as a primary method of distrobution, the spores simply move with the slime as it spreads out from the plant. Capillaries within the slime continue to bring nutrients to the plant itself. Due to the slime being the method of distribution, the spores do not go too far from their parent very often. This results in "forests" of banana weeds.

the Knobb is an evolution of the Nobb, a fluid filled cavity in the front of the creature enhances its sensativity to vibrations, however the fluid is a denser medium than water as it is made up of a slurry of modified muscle and nervous cells. the muscle of the sensory bulb is weaker compared to the normal muscles in the "foot" but the Knobb can vibrate, twitch and thump the mass slightly. This can assist in it's location of objects.

The entire planet shakes as a massive volcano erupts near the rocky outcrop. The massive amounts of gases pumped into the air heat up the atmosphere, melting the ice caps. Magma flows from the volcano's head, forming more surface land, gradually sloping to the ocean's floor creating shallows.

The ocean's floor is several hundred feet deeper below water. This change takes place over several thousand years, allowing evolution to let these creatures adapt and survive.

The deep ocean is now under more pressure. There is significantly less light in the deep ocean. Shock waves from the eruption altar tidal flows. The planet's temperature is much warmer, though still in the habitable zone. There is now more landmass, and shallows, though the landmass lacks proper soil.

How will these changes effect evolution?

Bananaweeds develop a secondary slime boundary layer, this layer is lighter than water and brings support to the plant by hefting up its mass. It is also incredibly toxic.

A consequence of this is that the slime capillary system has begun to take over the job of keeping the plant in one piece, and connections between leaves and trunk weaken, while the trunk itself softens.

This helps stave off predation by the spiny weed, and any other potential predators for the time being.

The Bopshrooms develop a form of musculature, allowing them to grab onto the base of the banana weeds and absorb the nutrients in the plant and extremely toxic slime with much more efficiency.

These muscle like structures tend to grow at the ends of the root structure, now more like tentacles than roots.

Another branch of the Shelled Knobb take a different approach. Due to the lack of surface-level predators, they discard the hardened shell and favour a lighter pigmentation to radiate heat into the atmosphere. The Bopshroom harnesses the some of the gases that it produces during digestion, namely hydrogen gas and methane, and develops reinforced gas-filled cavities that allow it to rise extremely quickly in water or take off into the air. The powerful muscles surrounding the cavities allow it to regulate the rate at which it releases air, giving the Bopshroom a bit of control with quickly their altitude decreases.

In order to allow the Bopshroom to actually intelligently use these adaptations without floating off and dying, its nervous system expands, allowing it to take in and calculate a greater number of factors that would affect its flight, such as windspeed and shifting air currents.

Due to the Bopshroom's significantly decreased weight from the air sacs, along with its extra limbs, it is now able to move quickly across land, its four appendages pulling itself across the ground in a sort of 'skipping' motion.

The Banana weed has crossed into exotic territory; It's leaves are now a thing of the past. It will continuously create "spores" which gestitate within the slime case of the parent plant, as they grow larger they harvest nutrients and light, nourishing their parent through the primary slime layer. Upon full maturation they sink to the sea floor and begin creating a secondary slime layer of toxins. The Banana weed now thrives in massive lush forests edging out almost all other life on the sea floor.

A frontal mouth for feeding on pesky Flek, developed eyes to find them with, and enlarged flippers. Even new ridges along the tail and spine have helped bring forth a new apex predator...if it decides it's not hungry for plankton that day.(Knophins)

The knigger, surrounded by increasing amount of enemies, has started taking refuge higher into the volcano. His head became larger and body thinner, allowing him to penetrate through the cracked stones and make it his shelter. In addition, the knigger developed the ability to shrink its size when inside water, allowing him to be farther concealed when facing his natural enemies in their environment.
