>Bring your A game and show me your best builds /pfg/
I've been doing what I consider "Fun NPC Builds" lately, which consists of the following:
>take a NPC class
>VMC it
>Have it transition into a PrC

It makes for pretty unique and NPCs I find are a good strength level to be interacting with the party when they're at the same level as the party. I reserve full PCs to very important NPCs (people who will travel with the party long term) and villains.
>>
>>48267373

...what? It's pretty simple in how it works.

>taking a 20 in your casting stat is usually shooting yourself in the foot unless you have silly pointbuy.

Bullshit. You can dump all your other stats except your primary casting stat and still be as competent as the rest of the party.

Why would anyone nerf themselves by rolling an 18 casting stat character? Its just so stupid as fuck.
>>
>>48267373
What? What issues do you have with it?

That was explicitly homebrew. He's yet to post about it with his trip on.

So /pfg/, what kind of music do you play at your table during climactic encounters?
>>

No, it's homebrew.

That's not at all a DSP product, it's just Forrest being a goof.

Depends entirely on the caster. 9th level spells? Sure, because the DCs are probably a big deal. 6th level spells? Ehh, not so much. Magus doesn't care that much depending on the spell. Alchemist gives 0 shits about their spell DCs, so Int is only relevant if you're relying on bomb DCs. 4th level spells? You'd be a retard to have even a 16 in your casting stat over physical stats.

>>
>>48267480
Even as a 9 level casters most of your casting stat will come from other sources at high optimization. At ULTRA high optimization you actually was an 18 because otherwise you hit a odd number for theoretical max int (it's 60 for an alchemist, 52 for everyone else under most circumstances excluding edge cases like an Agent of the Grave becoming a vampire to bump it to 54).

Though who really needs a 54/60 casting stat?

You're looking at playing a Warder then, preferably Zweihander Sentinel. you also want to gain access to Mithral Current somehow; I use bushi, but just traiting into it would be fine too. that one should replace Golden Lion, so that you have access to Mithral Current, Primal Fury, Scarlet Throne, and Iron Tortoise.

The reason for Iron tortoise is for two things - the first is Burnished shell, which lets you parry spells, which is pretty awesome, though the other counters in IT help. The second is Turtle General's Stance, which lets you become immune to breath weapons.

Scarlet Throne is useful for two other things - Sanguine Perseverence, which is one of the best counters in the game as it replaces your saving throws with a Sense Motive check. The other is Scarlet eye's Perception, which lets you make your next attack a touch attack.

Mithral Current is there for more counters, but for a good reason; the DODGEROLL counters allow you to negate enemy full-attacks by moving out of its threatened range, which is hugely important for evading the as many as eight attacks a dragon in full-attack mode might level at you.

Finally, Primal Fury is where your damage is at; Impaling Strike and Blood-Spray Strike are the biggest ones because they allow you to deal constitution damage. this is fucking important, because massive creatures (such as fully grown dragons and linnorms) have hugely inflated HP pools due to massive constitution and very high HD, but if you're dealing constitution damage, you're using its own high HD numbers against it; 2 con damage is equal to 1 damage for every HD it has and, for example, which is 24 extra damage versus a tor linnorm. and Scarlet Eye's Perception lets these strikes hit as touch attacks, which is amazing.

You no sell everything, roll out of the way when it wises up and then stab it in the fucking heart. Just make sure to bring a ring of Freedom of Movement, or it'll just grapple you, but otherwise... yeah.
>>
>>48267799
For the record, it seems like the most objection is how ham-handed PAIZO is at inserting these things, not actually them existing in PF.

Like...does anyone actually care if trans or gay people are in games? Also, we love waifus. And principled people are okay, but if they're hamhandedly cramming modern morals in a game that should be operating by 15th century morality...it's usually going to be badly written.

This was part of an encounter at high levels.

Half-Orc Bounty Hunter Slayer 3/Lore Warden Fighter 16
Took Racial Heritage (Dwarf), grabbed Goblin Cleaver/Orc Hewer and the other Cleave feats, plus Improved/Surprise Follow-Through and Cloak and Dagger Style. Cleaved the entire party, applied a dirty trick to the entire party, and as a bonus stole each weapon the party was wielding. Just a fun bit of nonsense.

WELL FOLKS, rising from the grave now that Legendary Vigilante's Playtest is starting to wind down, I've started looking back over the Stregone and TOTALLY NOT STEALING IDEAS putting some recent thoughts and tweaks in. It's slow going since I have to get back into the swing of things, but maybe I can actually get comfortable enough to bump that shit up to a 1.0 before the end of the summer. Still debating whether or not to nerf the damage progression, and the reworked spell list is... Under consideration/"Soon(tm)".
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GVTXsAAdkxpLjQFfvYzuME3lVyuhAU2chxXrK46vlbA/edit?usp=sharing

I really should get on the archetypes, because the only one that even "works", mechanically, right now is the Child of Fate, and that's because it's not at all hard to make a magical girl work. It probably wouldn't be that hard to get the Soulbound Puppeteer up and running since I already have a soulbound doll statblock to work with, but considering how niche it is to begin with my time would probably be better spent elsewhere. I could go for the low-hanging thematic fruit and try to just make an "alternate class" Cha-caster with sorcerer bloodlines, but I would feel obligated to go through and rework bloodlines so they worked with the class.

First off, all of the base effects of downing your strange brew should be scaling per 3 or 4 levels, especially with the kinds of bonuses they are.

>>48268207
> First off, all of the base effects of downing your strange brew should be scaling per 3 or 4 levels, especially with the kinds of bonuses they are.
I modeled the attack and damage bit off of the Investigator's Studied Target, just slightly easier to use in return for not being at-will and lacking Studied Strike. The dodge bonus makes sense to scale more slowly, or I was thinking about making it apply only to opportunity attacks (which has been a common ability associated with "drunk" style abilities in D&D and Pathfinder). I was a bit worried about the damage on the fire breath, I can probably scale that back a bit. It's very close range, but deals full damage to all targets instead of just one plus splash damage, so I wasn't sure where to put it.

I think I'll cut the dodge bonus and fire damage back to every 3 levels above 1st, but I wanna keep the attack and damage and temporary hit points where they are. Or I could cut them back to every 3 levels above 1st, but return the Will saves to all Will saves instead of just against fear...

> Secondly, it shouldn't start as a swift action. Move action, maybe, and upgrade to swift later in levels.
Crap, that's a good point. I was trying to decide between swift and standard, and I completely forgot move actions are a thing. Been playing 5e too much lately, I guess.

I wanna keep it mostly serious (my players probably won't cooperate with that, but I'm gonna try), but I did want to keep it as fire damage, specifically because I'm trying to keep some of the alcoholic flavor... breathing fire being the "flavor" of taking a swig of alcohol, and spraying it out in a little fire spray. It's a staple move of the action-hero drunkard. You just don't need a fire source to use this version.

Besides, it's kind of meant as a sort of replacement for bombs, which are baseline fire damage only. The normal Alchemist can take Discoveries to change that, but the Strange Brewer has more options than just the fire damage using the same ability, so I think it's a decent trade-off. If you face a fire-resistant enemy, just use the attack and damage bonus and go punch the fucker in the face.

Sounds like you /need/ that belch [sonic].

I hate to break this to you, but without mutagen I don't think the alchemist has much frontline potential.
>>
Why does a Host of Heroes Aegis actually get directly less customization points that it can freely distribute than anyone else? It's locked out of putting more into the Monomyths than it's level, flat out, fuck you, that's it.

You're level 3 and have 5 points? You can only put 3 into your Monomyth ones, ever.

Personally, I think the appearance stuff is jank, so I'm up for taking suggestions on how to make focused hunter better. I'm thinking HiPS at 11th and something at 17th at this point.

>N. Jolly's first published 3p product
.Okay, so the first BIG thing I ever did at the Paizo boards (aside from the alchemy guide) was a homebrew based off of the warlock (Gee Jolly, how were you so ready to make the kineticist work with a strong working background of the 3.5 warlock?), and eventually, I saw the (at the time) newly created third party request thread. I showed Jason Sonia the Warlock, he flipped and we started to make the thau (not my name, mine was the invoker).

Turns out Jason was VERY hands on, and the problem became that it was less of a warlock and more of a...something I don't like. The book looks beautiful, but the mechanics are not something of which I'm proud. And the publisher owns all the old mechanics so I can't even do anything with them.

This is why I really enjoy working with Legendary Games and Purple Duck Games, as both Mark G. and Jason N. just say "Get back to us in a month, tell us what you've written, and don't wholesale plagiarize anything which can be linked back to us."
>>
Is there a functional version of the kineticist floating around anywhere? Archetypes or 3rd party stuff? I already showed him the elementalist from spheres and the mystic from PoW and he doesn't care for them.
>>
>>48268504
I did end up lowering them to every 3 levels, but this is meant to replace Bombs and Mutagen. Mutagen especially being a long-term buff to attacks and damage and AC (if Strength), attacks and even more AC (if Dexterity), or durability and AC (if Constitution). I figure a short-term boost for a higher bonus (remember, it's only a few rounds at a time, instead of 10 minutes per level) would be fine, especially considering the Investigator already gets a +1 attack and damage per 2 levels ability that they can use at will, plus Studied Strike for even more spike damage.

Just to be clear, you did notice that it was only one bonus at a time, right? It's attack and damage OR armor class OR temporary hit points OR fire breath. If I didn't make that clear enough in the ability, that's definitely something I'll have to re-word.

I'm probably gonna go with the lower numbers and move action just to account for the added versatility anyway, but I do think you're overstating the balance issues here.
>>
>>48268648
Gambler Kineticist is pretty good.
>>
>>48268648
Check out Kineticists of Porphyra 1,2,3 or Legendary Kineticist, although for fixing the class, I'd say KOP 3 due to the mutations helping to unjank the burn mechanic.
>>
>>48268632
>Sounds like you /need/ that belch [sonic].
The point being that if I make it serious, they'll bring it down to a level of silly that I can stomach. If I start off making things silly, they'll bring it to levels of ridiculousness that I won't be able to handle. I'm thinking of my own self-preservation here.

>I hate to break this to you, but without mutagen I don't think the alchemist has much frontline potential.
That's what the non-fire breath options are meant to replace. Attack and damage for Strength mutagen, dodge for Dexterity mutagen, temporary hit points for Constitution mutagen, and fire breath for bombs. The difference here being that you don't have to spend an hour in advance to prep the bonus, and you can choose which boost you want when you use the ability, which is why it's not as powerful as the full mutagen would be.

> Make a discovery that lets you drink drunk and forget ongoing charms and compulsion effects
I've been toying with finding a way to replace fear/despair/charm/compulsion effects with an equal duration of confused as a ribbon, but that gets weird when you fail a save against Charm Person and you're rolling once a round for 10 hours to see if you stab yourself to death.

I might do something like "When you fail a Will save against a charm, compulsion, despair, or fear effect, you can expend 1 daily use of your Fortified Brew ability to reroll the save, taking the new result. If the second save succeeds, you become confused for 1d4 rounds."

What? Fucking what? Armorist (Blaster) alone gets you some great damage (bound staff for caster level, bound blaster for attack/damage, Rapid Shot, and so on). Elementalist can get some massive fire damage going, especially if you're willing to devote all of your talents to fire destructive blasts. Especially if your GM (you, in this case) is willing to allow Searing Spell to help get past resistance/immunity.

I've been throwing some level 10ish characters together just for fun, and it's trivially easy to get a destructive blast for 10d6+10 damage in a 10 foot burst at will, and 16d6+10 for a spell point, plus other options.

I think your player might just be a fucking idiot.

>That said, you can still pretty easily flavor the shape of your panoply as much as you want.

Prerequisites: Quick Draw, two Mithral Current maneuvers, two Tempest Gale maneuvers.
Benefit: You may make Mithral Current strikes with a ranged weapon. You must draw your weapon as part of the attack, and if you are initiating a melee strike your target must be no more than 30' away.
Special: If you are using a weapon with ammunition and can load that weapon as a free action, you may load your weapon when it is drawn this way.

Physical Description: Outwardly human, skinwalkers are virtually indistinguishable from others of the ethnic group into which they are born. Those rare skinwalkers who have bred true for generations tend to have dark eyes, straight dark hair, and richly colored skin. Skinwalkers' features vary greatly when they shapechange. They gain a bestial visage evoking the creatures they emulate; the snout elongates, teeth become more prominent, claws emerge from fingertips, and skin toughens into hide. Despite their shapechanging abilities, they are not immune to infection from full lycanthropes.

10d6+10 at level 10 is pathetic damage.
It's not very good if it offers no save, and if it's reflex half it's outright laughable.

Even 16d6+10 only amounts to an average of 66.

If you need to expend build resources on also trying to get "save DCs" so it isn't evaded, ignored or at least halved, and on top of that are only doing so when spending a limited daily resource?

You've misunderstood somewhat*. The really useless ability you'll never get to use is the rite of passage stuff. Taboos you'll run into often enough however.

You get to have your customizations anyways. HOWEVER, you can "assign" customizations to the monomyths.

In other words, say I have 4 points in, I dunno, I bought all the energies for energy resist.

I'm a level 3 aegis.

So I'm allowed to let up to 3 of those points be claimed by a monomyth: in other words:
>These 2 points in resist energy are part of the trickster monomyth, and these other 1 is part of overmind.
>Wait. Fuck. That's worthless.
>Okay. 3 of these energy resist points are part of ARCHMAGE instead
>Gain the 3 point monomyth ability of Archmage
>Worthless if I'm not an archmage today though

Still keep the customizations. But, IF you have associated customizations, that much points of them can be 'claimed' by a role, and you don't have to BE that role (though there may be little effect if you aren't) to get the monomyth bonuses. The 'claimed' customizations can't give you a different monomyth's abilities.

*Note: If *I* am the one who misunderstood instead, then the entire archetype is just plain trash and we're going to have to have some words with the author...

AND it might also mean that it's role-specific.

To be honest, both Host of Heroes and Living Legend seem... lackluster, really. They tried to be flavorful, but then they didn't really do anything useful for mechanics.

Ok I thought that it was a book about a faction of "Lawful Neutral" members, so far the idea I had in mind is something along the lines of Judge Dreadd , Robocop and so on, uphold the Law for the good of society.

But they take to another level, the book intro: "Society cannot survive mercy." it was the first red flag for me.

Then I started reading and got myself into the order of the chain, they are the Judge Dread faction, tracking bandits, capturing or killing then if necessary.

Then I got myself into their order mechanics,so you get boons if you flagellate yourself according to the order that you are into for example if you are in the order of the Pyre you burn yourself and get fire resistance 10 if you do that. Order of the Chain you have to crush your limbs with a chain and you will get +2 CM checks on disarm , grapple or trip opponents. So that shit started to get weird, they are not a religious order with the exception of the Order of the Godclaw.

So I started to read the material of the leaders, they are basically mass murderers and psychos with power and trying to control the masses, I think just 2 were like "Hey I'm neutral just want order".

Then you get yourself into Hellknight spells, items, magical items and such, mostly torture stuff and curses to capture your opponents. I felt the writer was trying too hard to sound edgy and dark with this book. Like I was expecting the Hellknights to be more sober in the aspect of power, not being power hungry nazis basically.

Are you talking about pic related? Was there anything about Order of the Vice?

> Over the course of the Hellknights’ existence more than one holding has risen and subsequently fallen. Whether to the hands of enemies, other Hellknights, or stranger events, the ruins of the knighthood linger on, in many cases surviving past the death of the orders that constructed them.

> Citadel Darvhage: Exemplars of the Measure and the Chain, the Order of the Vice was wiped out and its fortress, Citadel Darvhage on the north shore of Lake Sorrow, reduced to rubble. None can say what enemy annihilated the order (though the eerie transformations that afflict the ruins may offer clues), but the order’s interest in defending Cheliax from corruptive forces from beyond the mortal realm harkens toward some manner of extraplanar retaliation

Is that book even cleaned or did you just post an uncleaned book in the open?

They mentioned it as a fallen order in the last page of the book.

Ok I honestly really like that as a theme though. Bodyguards are an underappreciated adventurer archetype.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic#TOC-Special-Spell-Effects
>All offensive combat actions, even those that don’t damage opponents, are considered attacks. Attempts to channel energy count as attacks if it would harm any creatures in the area. All spells that opponents resist with saving throws, that deal damage, or that otherwise harm or hamper subjects are attacks.
Demoralization is an offensive combat action and therefore an attack.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat#TOC-Concealment
>Concealment Miss Chance: Concealment gives the subject of a successful attack a 20% chance that the attacker missed because of the concealment. Make the attack normally—if the attacker hits, the defender must make a miss chance d% roll to avoid being struck. Multiple concealment conditions do not stack.
If you are under a Blur spell, demoralization attempts have a 20% chance of failing against you. If you are in darkness and the demoralizer lacks darkvision, the Intimidate attempt has a 50% chance of failing, and that is assuming they target the correct square.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat#TOC-Cover
>Total Cover: If you don't have line of effect to your target (that is, you cannot draw any line from your square to your target's square without crossing a solid barrier), he is considered to have total cover from you. You can't make an attack against a target that has total cover.
If you are hiding behind a tower shield, demoralize attempts never work behind you. This is a literal anti-bullying shield.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/universal-monster-rules#TOC-Incorporeal-Ex-
>It is immune to all nonmagical attack forms.
If you are incorporeal, whether due to ghost syrup or Veiled Moon, you cannot be demoralized.

Remember: If someone is attempting to hurt your feelings, raise your tower shield or turn incorporeal.

>Every flame from shadows guard
Did they really have to do that? Butchering established conventions of grammar isn't poetic, even if it is technically grammatically correct. I can't even tell what it's trying to say.

Path of War: Expanded, Elemental Nimbus:
>Air: You gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls against opponents wearing metal armor, and your attacks deal an additional 1d6 points of electricity damage. At initiator level 10th, the bonus on attack rolls increases to +4 and the additional damage increases to 3d6.
>Fire: Your attacks deal additional fire damage equal to your initiation modifier. At initiator level 10th, this damage increases to be equal to twice your initiation modifier.
From 1st-level, demoralization attempts can have electricity or fire damage added to them, allowing you to shock opponents or deliver sick burns even without Blistering Invective.

Also as a result of this, spells like Fireball and Magic Missile are subject to miss chances, but they are also eligible for Sneak Attacks, which require only attacks and not hits.

>one player is deliberately not telling me what he's playing to get me to play an actual character for the story and not for mechanics

So how's your upcoming session preparations holding up, /pfg/?

by culling books two, five, and six and developing more of the areas around Sandpoint. End-game is apparently more Indiana Jones and the Thalassion Memes. also more gameplay around rebuilding Sandpoint and the keep.

not sure how we this all came up but its the perfect storm for the perfect campaign, we all just got so into it we cranked the RP up to 11 with proper inter-PC relationships etc.. doubt it would work without the characters we've built.
>>
>>48271405

I gotta admit, I fucking love parts of this book. The Branding Irons, the Godclaw Mystery (and Godclaw in general), The Vigilante Archetype. It's edgy, but it's got a lot of good stuff going for it.

Help me see this from a third person point of view, pfg.

A player in a game I'm going to run, with DSP, SoP and a few other things on demand, wants to do a charge cavalier. Also crafted a ring of 25 charges of psionic lion's pounce to full attack with triple damage every charge. Getting silly, but I'm willing to let it run.

To do this he's also dug through some obscure 3.5 3pp book to get a feat that lets him add double STR to two handed power attacks. Extra +4 to damage, +12 per pounce attack, it's not really a big deal.

But, I dunno, it really bugs me for some reason. He's already highest DPR in the party by a good margin, and I don't like the precedent it sets in terms of escalation and implying that now everyone should look through dozens more splatbooks to stay competitive. And also the fact it isn't even an interesting feat to make an exception for, it's just 'hey GM can you allow obscure stuff just to raise my damage'.
The player doesn't see what my problem is and says that fishing through obscure stuff is the point of 3.X, I'm saying I just want to draw the line somewhere I'm comfortable with, he jumps between saying there shouldn't be a limit and that I should just make an exception this one time because the feat is right there.

There's a chance I'm still a bit salty over a (probably genuine) misunderstanding where he thought I'd allowed it and so put it in without telling me, so maybe I'm biased.
Am I being unreasonable?
>>
>>48271529
Depends on what you told him from the get go. Honestly he still just pisses damage and nothing else, and even then he can only do it under certain circumstances.
>>
>>48271529
I just dont allow third party. Tell him he is going to be unbalacing encounters and it could start hurting the game.
>>
>>48271405
>that stormwind fallacy
Tell him he's an idiot.
>>
>>48271529
Is that the kind of gsme the other players want? If the group is of the "more power!" variety like your cavalier then its fine imo. But if they dont want to, then tell him that he's hitting diminishing returns and shit. Honestly, more damage is rarely a problem.
>>
>>48271529
How many other damage dealers in his party? If there is only one DD, that's probably isn't a problem.
>>
>>48271489
...so you can pick one of them later. Come on, dude.
