This is like the 5th thread dealing with goblin slayer in just the last two days.

Honestly? No. It's shitty light-guro snuff porn trying to pretend it isn't. It's shallow and nothing more than blatant fanservice pandering with a dash of cheap shock value. It's schlock, and not even good schlock.

No. While it may have competent pcs, the world building and setting are retardedly shallow and only serves to make sure there more violence and edginess for the writer to make.

Essentially, it's another Attack on Titan. The latest in a lo g li e of series trying to rude off the fame of Berserk without actually understanding what makes series like Berserk and Vinland Saga good

No, the only thing to take out of Goblin Slayer is the Goblin Slayer himself, and only as a bit NPC you show off once to flavor the world before tucking him away forever.

Dog Days is more /tg/ material, and it's mostly pornography without the porn.

I'm not going to go as far as to say it's good but I'm definitely interested. It seems like the bulk of the rape, which wasn't really that much, is over too. I'm assuming from here on, the story will be the MC training the Priestess on how to remove kegob.

I ran an entire, multi-year campaign that took place in the Dog Days setting.

Yeah its like that.

>>48265052
The story is NOTHING like Berserker.
The main characters are a bunch of not-really nobody but quite nobody who deal with trivia tasks that you hand over to NPCs in D&D.

Bruh, the Bible is fucking brutal at times. Especially the Old Testament. Or what about all the accounts of (especially early) saints and the ways they died. Just read it. It was schlocky garbage mishmashing western media with the worst of Japanese without seeming to have any understanding. There's a fucking "goblin baby what do" in the first 2 issues of "Goblin 2000AD." The art even sucks, there are copy pasted poses all over the first chapter!

Berserk, to contrast, is better in all ways. The only saving grace of Goblin Slayers is that it could eventually be good but I doubt it.
>>
>when the squad goes out to jump some fools but y'all a bunch of bitches
>>
>>48264535

I mildly dislike it. The art is not amazing but it isn't terrible or incompetent. It evokes the feeling that the artist would rather draw edgy rape and shit and rely on that cool factor rather than improve his artwork, unlike Ubel Blatt, which has superior art to back up the cheese, or Berserk who does the dark fantasy with far more sophistication and phenomenal art.

You can tell from the generic character designs, background NPCs, and architecture, this manga would have been easily adapted from a random nameless eroge or another random shitty Japanese fantasy setting with the exact same Slayer-esque clothing despite the year being 2016 and anachronistic architecture.

This is basically a shitty high fantasy version of Akame ga Kiru with a protag with an xration face.

Haven't read it, but besides just the immediate red flag warning of having so many shock value factors so early (sexual violence is fine if its well written, but if its not its just horrible), another thing that makes me distrustful of it is that it seems like its trying to take the piss out of rpg tropes.

Like, why? What exactly is the point or thematic signifcance of a cutesie rpg party getting raped because they're suddenly in a dark, gritty, low fantasy world instead of where they'd make sense?

There are parodies and deconstructions that make sense and have something interesting to say, and then there's stuff like this where it just seems like the author is grasping to be edgy and hip.

Also fuck that art style.
>>
>>48267520

*that. It's just the one. Also, that's not the entire first page. It's one corner of the first page. Actual space taken up by that background character isn't even a tenth of the page, and even then, it's literally just her hips and legs that are the same. Nothing else, not even the clothes covering them. It's not great or anything, but it's hardly trash. It's mediocre at worst.
>>
>>48267534
First page has the character in the OP pissing herself in full color, you are managing to underestimate how stupid this manga is.

Oh, and the "adventure sheet" needed to apply to the guild is literally a 5e character sheet.

See, this is what I'm talking about.

If it was a gritty low/dark fantasy with a gritty art style and a realistic depiction of everything, it would seem more coherent for me.

But instead its a gritty dark/low fantasy that inexplicably has cutesie rpg elements that make no sense whatsoever in context with the dark/low/realistic fantasy elements.

>>48267797
Those two bows and the buckler were all the minimum advantage the noob party needs.

By the way, /a/ tries to defend the series by saying that the guild did all they could to prevent the quest from going to such a bad end, and the guild shouldn't care so much about losing adventurers even if it happens in a daily basis. It this true in a typical /tg/-style guild?
>>
>>48267824
It has to make sense is the thing.

Like this picture right here. >>48267165 if this kind of armor is so useless, and so likely to get you killed, why does it exist? Why is it a thing that you're likely to run into in a guild? Why do guilds and adventure parties exist in this kind of universe? Is the author just trying to be cool by "deconstructing" "tropes"? Probably.

If you're going to "deconstruct" something, it has to make sense, and it has to have a point. There's no point of "injecting reality into a trope" if your basis for doing so makes even less sense from a logical/reality perspective.

Also contrasting cutesie art styles with brutal darkness is a thing that *can* work. But like other shock value factors, its something that requires a high level of skill and execution, and thus its another "red flag" warning that makes me distrustful of whether the author has the chops for it.
>>
>>48267886
Not everything is a deconstruction

This is what's called "playing for drama"

The idea isn't "tee hee, stupid adventurers in a stupid fantasy world would get rekt"

It's more like "here are the ramifications of the tropes, how does it affect the lives of the characters?"
>>
>>48267918

That *is* a deconstruction though.

And that's what I'm saying. It attempts to show the rammifications of the tropes, but it doesn't give a logical explanation for why those tropes should exist in-universe in the first place.

The ramifications need to be logical, but the set up of the story needs to be logical too, otherwise its just hypocritical. and falls into the first "idea" you posted.
>>
>>48265160
Tell us about this? It had to have been better than fucking season 3 fucking whales. I just wanted FUN
>>
>>48267918
The last thing you listed is actually what a deconstruction is, "tee hee..." is a subversion.

That aside, I'm willing to wait and give the series some chapters before I form a firm opinion but as it stands, it doesn't seem like there was any need to show the brutalization of the newbie party. I actually liked the second chapter a bit for some, "Oh, that's pretty clever" moments but the first chapter was pretty distasteful to me. I'm pretty on the fence until we get more.
>>
>>48267863
The guild did basically nothing to save them. The girl at the desk knew they were all going to die and let them go anyway. There need to be party composition rules, obviously. Newb party would have rocked that cave if they showed up with four heavily armored guys with short spears or pitchforks. Or at least make them bring someone who knows what they're doing.
>>
>>48267957
No

Deconstruction implies the trope is specifically being explored to show how it's unrealistic, poorly thought out, or impractical. It's a commentary on the storytelling device. Meta.

When a trope is played for drama the serious or melodramatic elements are played up for emotional impact. It's character based.
>>
>>48267715
>But instead its a gritty dark/low fantasy that inexplicably has cutesie rpg elements that make no sense whatsoever in context with the dark/low/realistic fantasy elements.

A series that has a cutesie, rpg style to it that is a dark/low/realistic fantasy in action could make for an interesting work. The issue is that Goblin Slayer comes off as exploitation from the outset.
>>
>>48268014
From distant spoilers, the Gobslayer suffered a less than flawless victory only once. The other adventurers were, in a nutshell, fucked over by bad luck.
>>
>>48267957
nope, this serie actually go over the top and tell you this is literally a TRPG world where every god works as a DM.
>>
>>48268014

One question:

They show the brutalization of the newbie party, right?

Do they also show the goblin babies getting splattered?

It would be hilarious to me if it was okay to show a girl getting gang raped, but not okay to show some cartoony goblin babies getting killed. That's the real horror, right there.

Also now that I think about it, the goblin baby seen looks so melodramatic and cliche. Fuck. 'Least it makes a good meme picture though.
>>
I'll commend the writer if GS doesn't have some tragic backstory involving goblins.

It'd be interesting if he's just a psycho killer and uses goblins to avoid trouble, or if he's working on behalf of someone else who despises goblins.

>>
>>48268032
>Deconstruction implies the trope is specifically being explored to show how it's unrealistic, poorly thought out, or impractical.

Yeah, and isn't that what it is when you show a fighter who didn't wear enough armor getting wrecked in places where he didn't have armor? It seems a clear deconstruction (or attempt at deconstruction) of rpg tropes such as the lightly armored fighter class.

>>48268068

Well, I'm convinced. It's shit.
>>
Quick questions,

Isn't this just a 1e player party?

Isn't this just Tucker's Kobolds but with Gobbos?
>>
>>48268131
Based on chapter 2, the goblins aren't actually very smart even at their best, it's mostly overconfidence and underpreparedness that gets people killed on them. The Goblin Slayer's handling of them isn't nearly as resourceful as your average Dungeon Meshi chapter, he's just applying the level of tactics the average DnD player does and he's well aware of it.
>>
>>48267824
>>48267886
An example of a work that does a good job of that would be School-Live!.
>>
>>48268120
The emotional buildup prior to the massacre makes it clear that we're seeing this as a drama.

Kamina being killed horribly in Gurren Lagann for acting like an idiot isn't meant to make us think "lol, fucking teenagers piloting mechas how absurd?"

We're meant to think "oh no, damn his foolish choices!"
>>
>>48268240
Actually, there's no more rape after this. There is also roughly the same amount of slaughter, but the disconnect between the GS' progress in battle with how others fare with goblins is too jarring.
>>
>>48268240

And if you're going to do it as a drama, it has to make sense.

As said, why would the guild let an unprepared adventuring party into a place where they could get gang raped? Why and how do "adventuring guilds" exist in a such a gritty setting? Why does thong armor exist when its guaranteed to get you killed in this universe? Who sells that shit? Nothing makes sense, and as a result the drama and setting as a whole looks like cheap grasping.

Like I said, if it was a gritty dark fantasy, with a gritty aesthetic, about a sheltered wide eyed idealist who ventures out into the world, witnesses brutal horrors, and ends up tagging alongside an experienced hunter as part of a skull crushing game of underground cat and mouse, that would make more sense. Hell, that sounds way more engaging to me.

As is, it looks like a collection of try-hard cliches thrown into a blender in a fairly one-dimensional way. I don't see much point to it.
>>
>>48268182
I'd give him a little more than that. The average DnD player reads things off of their character sheet, and I feel like throwing down a torch followed by a throwing knife and leading the goblins back to a simple trap ambush is a step above average.

I feel like a lot of the hate in this thread is pissy and unjustified and sort of orbits around the rape as a huge moral outrage and the worst thing ever.

So far, this seems decent. It's not amazing, but it's a fairly entertaining read if you don't get too wound up and upset with its flaws.
>>
>>48268349
The hate are generated mostly by people who didn't even finish the first chapter, take a guess.
>>
>>48268349
To be fair, anything can be enjoyed if you can give it enough leeway. Too late for it, though. Too many people are already selling this hard and complaints are being volleyed back.
>>
>>48268342
Keep in mind, the priestess along with her party are viewpoint characters. They coming along for the journey into this alien world with us. Remember LOTR? The shire is familiar, for an englishman who grw up in turn of the century rural england it provides a sense of place and time from which we can venture into this fantastical realm. We're just as innocent as Frodo and Sam when they crossed out of Eastfarthing.

The party is meant to provide both emotional investment and familiarity, These people were her friends after all.
>>
>>48268404

Honestly, I kind of like the concept, but most manga writing doesn't impress me, and I'm not seeing many arguments in its favor that make it sound like anything more than another flavor of the month.
>>
>>48268349
I thought the second chapter was alright but I thought the first chapter was tasteless. I don't have any problem with rape, in fact I'd go so far as to call myself a fetishist, it's just that I didn't think I'd have lost out on anything at all aside from a boner if they skipped that part entirely. Chapter 2 establishes everything that appears to be important about this series.

That aside, this is just kind of how 4chan works. There're a lot of worse series and I'm pretty optimistic about this one after the second chapter, but people're going to complain when something gets over-exposure. I don't even think it's the fabled 4chan Contrarian Disease.

How I see it is that people read something, some people like it, and some people hate it. For the most part, neither group has a reason to bring it up. Eventually though, someone who likes it will bring it up to find like-minded fans, and that's how a thread gets rolling.

Over time as people become aware that there're more and more people enjoying the same work, they bring it up more. Eventually we have 5 threads in two days and the people who disliked it but were quiet up until this point get fed up because they're stuck seeing it when they don't have to.

And then we end up here.
>>
>>48268471

You bring up a good comparison. The Shire.

The Shire, and why it works the way it does, makes sense in the context of Middle Earth. The Country Englishmen stand-ins are thoroughly explored, and as a result they don't feel out of place at all compared to the rest of the setting.

Can GS's adventuring guild and cutesie rpg elements really say the same?
>>
>>48268539
Moving away from the style issues, I'm more concerned about the guild. I was expecting them to be more preserving of the adventurers, since they will be the ones who keep the "pests" away from town and they complement the presence (or lack thereof) of militia or actual town soldiers. But I found them too lax despite the constant problems involving adventuring failures.

Fuck that, this panel is literally the only warning given and the priestess was literally standing at the counter after having just filed her paperwork.

Any guild that let a person less than 1 minute in the guild trot off to their doom with a "warning" like this is the lowest tier worldbuilding.
>>
>>48269180
Because there already are plenty of shojo comics with rape scenes in it.
Its not really a big deal in Japan.
>>
>>48269234
yeah i don't know what with this panel.
In the novel the guild miss specificly told them that someone higher rank will come take them on the mission (goblin slayer always come in afternoon)

The rape isn't obscene, it just feels tacky.

'Look how DARK and OBSCENE we are and DUMB PEOPLE get BRUTALLY MURDERED and the girls RAPED because this is a dark, sick, grim realistic world.'

It's not terrible or grotesque, it just feels tacky and there for the sake of schlocky B-movie horror.

>>
>>48269234
oh and as stated above, there's absolutely no world building in this.
The entire world is a TRPG table that Gods (IRL humans) screw with.
There's no world building to look at.
>>
>>48269397

And if you told a story about it, I'd expect it to have half-decent writing and storytelling, tackling the subject matter with some degree of intelligence and story-telling finesse.
>>
>>48269430
The Odyssey doesn't have much worldbuilding and the gods treat humans like chess pieces
>>
>>48267863
The guild did literally nothing to stop a group of first time amatuars from taking a mission that they weren't ready for. I mean I know the fighter was close to brain dead for thinking, "hurr durr we'll assault a goblin nest with no preparation, planning, tactics, or teambuilding." But atleast have some kind of skill barrier for the missions. At least one adventurer that is of a rank equal to or exceeds the danger of the mission, or assign number values to ranks and if all together the party's number is the same or more as the mission number.

Holyshit though that fighter was so stupid it hurts to think about. You met these people that day, you don't know their abilities, you haven't practiced moving in formation and you don't even use any teamwork. Didn't scout the cave, didn't research goblin habits or ask for tips from other adventurers. There were dozens of things the party could have done to prepare and they did exactly zero of it. I guess it makes sense they got abosultely butchered within 5min of entering the cave.
>>
>>48269529
Are you seriously comparing the odyssey to a fucking light novel/manga series?
>>
>>48269552
Personally I would've been okay with that if they set a precedence for goblins being easy fodder, but the story makes itself pretty clear that the goblins have been a problem for awhile and that it's actually a very common occurrence for new adventurer groups to be destroyed by them. I just can't understand how someone takes to this attitude in-universe.
>>
>>48269529
>>48269557

Greek myth itself was already established, and there was real thematic relevance to the way the gods behaved which embodied the Greeks views on the universe and life.

The gods being fickle assholes in every story actually had a point to it.
>>
>>48264535
I'm inclined to like it because I like Goblinslayer himself, but all I can feel reading it is that the story is moving at 10x too fast a pace.

If the story-arc leading up to the first group's destruction had lasted ten issues, but had the same result, and did not drop so many anvils, I would like this story a lot more.
>>
>>48269611
I personally would've hated that if we reached the same result a different way. I'd be bothered that I wasted so much time following these characters instead of hopping right into the story, I want to go the opposite way and just start from... wherever the hell is actually relevant to the story.

Goblon Slayer feels like a D&D session where the players wanted to ditch the DM's super cool DMPC and go dungeon crawling, and the DM retaliates by fudging the dice rolls with the first goblin trash mob the party faces and then gleefully starts narrating about how the goblins rape and eat the party.

Then the DM has his DMPC show up to save the sole survivor of the party wipe and then kill all the goblins to demonstrate just how totally badass and cool his OC Donut Steel is.
>>
>>48267863
Yeah, the guild was like: "Oh well, another group down the drain." I mean, they apparently sent that Goblin Slayer dude after them, but they could've prevented the whole mess by simply telling the group to stand the fuck down or get thrown out of the guild right at that counter.

I thought it was pretty funny.

>>
>>48264535
Frankly it's pretty ridiculous.
The entire initial beginning relies on all the heroes acting like they live in a rates G MMO Japanese Fantasy world, except CLEARLY they don't and somehow not only they but much of their culture is somehow unaware of it without explanation to a level that is basically pure writer fiat then any form of real logic behind it at all.
In actual history when the world was that dangerous people weren't magically unaware of it; even in peaceful places they were AWARE you weren't some badass invincible dude who could kill a million guys.

Basically this is a manga that WOULD have been very genre deconstructing maybe a decade or two ago, but unfortunately he published it way too late and instead of really deconstructing anything new he's just being edgy for the sake of edgy.
>>
>>48272553
Let's not forget that despite showing us how regular fantasy stuff wouldn't work in a "realistic" setting, Goblin Slayer's own armor is pretty unrealistic in some parts and his sword looks like it would weight maybe 15 solid pounds.

I know that's part of artistic license taken on part of the manga version compared to the novel but it's still an oversight, and the entire thing reads like it's trying WAY too hard most of the time.
>>
>>48265647
I'm pretty sure most people like me read Berserk for amazing art and cool stuff, not edgy parts. Second duel with Zodd was fucking amazing.
>>
>>48272683
The reunion on the hill of swords is awesome not just for the action but for the sheer emotional power of it.
You can see that Guts can barely believe Griffith is there, and how he wants Griffith to admit he was wrong because once they were BEST FRIENDS and his betrayal hurt Guts.
Even Griffith's impassive emotionless mask is telling in that he basically outright confirms that Guts was DEFINITELY the most important person in his life before, as he was the only person who could ever "move his heart" away from his dream.
>>
>>48272440
>GS is for edgy teenagers who can't bother to read actual literature, just deal with it.

There's that Wolfsmund series that covers just that much, much more effective.

In comparison, this one's yet another: "what if Dragon Quest were real somewhere"-story.
>>
>>48269529
... and for having thought they were only chess pieces, Aphrodite and Ares get almost killed by Diomedes.
>>
>>48272553
This.

It bugs me when stories do this. Like the great hero/villain gets an arrow between the eyes because they don't wear a helmet.

I like some animation that has the 'Mighty Champion' shot in the head but he appears several episodes later to challenge the archer and can actually deflect flurries of arrows so it appears he really doesn't need a helmet. The dead warrior is implied to be a fake, like Patroclus (killed by Hector) to Achilles, who should have been wearing a helmet.

I liked it, made me want to read other japanese comics about dungeon dwelling.
>>48265601
Not really. Goblins kidnapping maidens and reproducing with them is a fairly common trope. What I like about Goblin Slayer is it's realism to things like how using a longsword in a tight cavern is a bad idea, how GS finds weapons on site, how instead of being over powered main character number 9233939 he planned and laid traps for common Goblins, how armor actually works like it should, adventurers easily missing a fork path because they weren't cautious enough, and the fact that creatures with the strength of human children managed to defeat arguably strong adventurers because they had zero experience in dungeon dwelling.
I think what's going on here is that a lot of people are being triggered because japanese cartoon protagonist trope characters number 1 and 2 died for Goblins.

>Longsword a bad idea

It wasn't the longsword, it was the swinging it around like an idiot and not training to fight as a team. Longswords work fine in tight spaces if you train for it.
>>
>>48279282
I still don't see how having a simple background makes this a "bad tasting meal".
Why are you focusing on the most autistic flaw in it?
>>
>>48279328
It's easy to call her an idiot for swinging it around like that, but I'd probably do the same. Considering how angry I would be that a friend of mine is dying from something that should be extremely easy to kill.
>>
>>48279106
The first chapter is supposed to be above average, to drag in attention and tell you the plot of the manga. When the first fucking page has copypasted characters, you can expect it to get even worse as it goes.

Also, "you can't do better" is not an argument. I can't make a TV, but it never stopped anyone from complaining when they got a broken one.
>>
>>48279395
While I do agree that "you can't do better" is a shit argument, your argument of "It's not shit right now, but it'll be shit because the background in one of the panels wasn't amazing" is just as retarded.
I mean seriously, there are actual flaws here we can discuss, why are you sticking to this extremely retarded point?
>>
>>48279331
>Why are you focusing on the most autistic flaw in it?
I am not the guy you replied earlier, I am just pointing that your argument does not hold any ground. Something being good is not relative, if all manga had shit art, all of them would have shit art, simple as that, you can't convince anyone that a shit art is not shit because there are people who are even shittier.
>>
>>48279438
>It's not shit right now
I never said it is not shit right now. And since the first chapter that is supposed to be above average is shit, you can only expect the worse.
>>
>>48279487
Alright, then instead of giving reasons as to why it might be worse later on (The art not being amazing) Why don't you point out why it's shit right now?
>>
>>48267633
>I think everything that's not good is complete shit

>>
>>48279712

You're both idiots, the argument here is not weather anything below good is acceptable or not, it's weather this is good or not.
>>
>>48279527
The whole thread is a discussion as to why it is shit in both art and plot. I have already discussed this shit in /a/, so I don't want parrot everything I said earlier.
>>
>>48279750
Well tough shit, you're not at /a/ right now and no one from that thread is here. And even if the art really was below average, (Which I'm not saying it is) that doesn't make the whole thing shit, it just makes something lacking in the art department. And not even that is the case here, what it it does with visuals is more than enough to be considered at VERY least good.
>>
>>48265601
The rape scene early on is short and largely non explicit.
>>
Feels like I should give the series a little more time. I've only seen two chapters available in English, so give it a chance to expand. I've seen some color pics with other characters, maybe the players learn and make more capable PCs.

PS, shock moments like this don't seem too out of place for me. I've had GMs do the same in everything from DnD to Pokemon, where they just throw us in. In Pokemon's place it was that the real world doesn't behave exactly like the games when it comes to battling.
