What d6 success count system would you recommend?
Burning Wheel, Mouse Guard, and Torchbearer.
Older versions of Shadowrun can be fun too, even if they can be incredibly cumbersome.

Skill rank as d6, stat as bonus. Take highest die. If there's more than 1 "6", add one to the result per additional "6". If you get all "1"s, you fumble.
This way, skill level REALLY matters, as an inexperienced but talented git will probably make some fatal mistake while veterans provide far more stable results.
