Topic of discussion: Custom Commandersoftware? What is your opinion of them? Does your group allow them? Have you ever used one? How was it? Has anyone in your playgroup used any? How did that go? Is there any custom Commander you would use that you have seen or made?
>>
Those custom commanders are really sweet. I especially like the RWB one - maybe because it's competition is really shit atm
>>
>>48211049
I don't think you need to specify "aren't on the battlefield" in the fourth one.
>>
>>48211049

the temur guy seems pointless as hell, also not sure you can "reveal" a card from an already revealed zone, only from your hand or library
>>
>>48211049
Those commanders are pretty awesome. They don't look too overpowered, and they look really interesting to play. I'd totally make a deck around Hallos, or Vairn especially - he seems like everything I'd want in a commander!

As for the questions:
>What is your opinion of Custom Commanders?
I think custom commanders are pretty cool, if done right. Some people either get the templating super wrong, or have abilities that are absurdly overpowered or off colour, which is annoying. But, done correctly, and obviously pitched to your playgroup beforehand, they could be awesome!
>What is your opinion of them?
I've never asked my playgroup if they'd let me use one, and nobody else has asked. I don't know what their answer would be.
>Is there any custom Commander you would use that you have seen or made?
I'd totally use Vairn, and love him forever. I've seen a few other custom commanders that would seem interesting, but I never saved them.

Thos cards look like shit desu. Anyways I got one of the promo cards with 3 packs today. Got a foil blind obedience so my question is am I only able to use it in decks with w/b?
>>
>>48211480
Extort has it's W/B hybrid symbol in its reminder text, which technically isn't considered part of the rules text for the card. So you can use Blind Obedience in a mono-white deck.
>>

Jesus christ on a platter that's the most broken shit. Please tell me that's the one you picked. The only one even close is the mardu one.
>>

I don't see the issue as long as everyone in your playgroup is doing it and have agreed to the power level of the other cards being played.

Those are actually old versions.
>>
>>48213917
Manifesting them allows you to turn them face up by paying their mana cost instead of turning them face up forcefully with the triggered ability if you need to.
>>
>>48214490
All green legends should have a generic mana cost, because they are green. Also boggles arent black or white at all so why is there a junk boggle?
Dalus should make all creatures you control elementals in addition to their other types for flavor
varin doesnt even make sense, it should be more logically worded
"When a creature you control dies, return that creature to the battlefield face down. (They're 2/2 creatures.) This wording removes tokens from the game without being pants on head retarded.
>>
>>48211206
>also not sure you can "reveal" a card from an already revealed zone, only from your hand or library

You can. It's like how you can reveal a card from your hand even if your hand is already being revealed thanks to Telepathy or reveal the top card of your library when you have Future Sight.

There's technically nothing in the comp rules associated defining where a card can be revealed from, so it's only limited to any zone you are instructed to reveal from or any zone you can activate the ability from.
>>
>>48214656
>Also boggles arent black or white at all so why is there a junk boggle?

Are you saying Hexproof is all it takes to be a Bogle?

>varin doesnt even make sense, it should be more logically worded

What is there about it that doesn't make sense?
"Manifest" just means "Put it onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature", so it technically just reads "Whenever a nontoken face-up creature you control dies, put it onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature."

You can turn manifested face up as a special action by paying their mana cost, so it's functionally different too.
>>
>>48211529
Get stuff like Junktroller, Tel-Jilad Stylus, and stuff to order your library's bottom. He tends to be built as either Goblin Tribal or Weenies.
>>
>>48214119
Worse than swords to ploughshares in a format where life is meaningless.

But then, newsflash, most removal is worse than 1 mana instant speed exile based removal, so who cares
>>
>>48211049
Going with the topics:

>What is your opinion of them?
I like looking at custom cards in general. I think custom cards are acceptable to use if everyone in the playgroup is using custom cards, and only using them against custom cards.

>Does your group allow them?
No. I have brought up the idea before since our meta is getting stale, but no one seems interested.

>Is there any custom Commander you would use that you have seen or made?
Not that I can think of off-hand.
>>
>>48214762
You dont even need the non token wording, tokens fizzle when they hit the graveyard, you can keep the manifest crap on there but you are being overly wordy with a card for no reason.
>>
>>48214656
>When a creature you control dies, return that creature to the battlefield face down.

You need to touch up your templating. "When" is only used if the condition is expected to happen once, like a permanent entering the battlefield. It should be "whenever". You don't say "return that creature", because by the time it's in the graveyard it isn't a "creature" anymore, it's a "creature card". You say "return that card".

Some cards like to specify nontoken even when it would make zero difference, because that makes things clearer to players. See Nim Deathmantle for an example. If a creature died and you could use Nim Deathmantle's triggered ability, you wouldn't get it back either way, but they put "nontoken" on it so people wouldn't try to do it.
>>
>>48214865
>you are being overly wordy with a card for no reason

It's just minimizing unnecessary triggers and making things more obvious to inexperienced players. That's just how Magic rules text is nowadays, and besides, you're saying it's "overly wordy" for one word.
>>

I've been thinking of doing an edh league (starting pauper then moving up from there) where your general is a custom legend that you get to build off of a chart with X points. As you progress through the league you get more points....the only problem is that i'm having trouble with pricing things
>>
>>48214119
High-tier decks run too many non-basics to use it reliably. But if your deck isn't super-high budget, it can be pretty good.
>>
>>48215176

A ton of those non-basics are just fetches that are grabbing a Mountain you could use anyway.

>there are people who don't have at least 4 basic lands in a deck
>>
>>48215387
>>48215211
In, say, a three-colored deck, you'll need to have both a card to grab a basic mountain, plus this card. Yes, you'll have a mountain more often than not... But there'll still be times when you don't, and you want your removal to always be active. Enough hoops to jump through, and sooner or later Journey to Nowhere will ends up being better value. Hell, Journey To Nowhere is arguably better anyway; it costs one more mana, but isn't vulnerable to land destruction.
>>
>>48214656
>All green legends should have a generic mana cost, because they are green.
Hahaha, good one.
>Also boggles arent black or white at all so why is there a junk boggle?
Ah shit, are you retarded?
>varin doesnt even make sense, it should be more logically worded
>"When a creature you control dies, return that creature to the battlefield face down. (They're 2/2 creatures.)
Oh damn, you are retarded. Sorry about that.
>>
When are we getting more cards (helpful, supporting ones hopefully) for all the smaller tribes? I want my fucking myr deck and I don't want those gross changelings in it! Also skeletons and those poor fucking samurai.
>>
>>48215522
You do realise that sacred foundry is a mountain right?
>>
>>48215930
There will still be times when you have this card in hand but not something that will fetch it.

Admittedly, my experience comes largely from decks where the people involved were willing to buy whatever cards they needed... that were below twenty dollars. So mana bases more expensive than normal for casual players, but no non-basic mountains other than Madblind.

Having thought on it, the real reason for the lack of play is probably because it's vulnerable to two different types of removal instead of just one.

How do we feel about Future Sight? I see more and more lists running the card and I've run it myself a few times but without top deck manipulation it doesn't seem -as good- as I want it to be.

Disclaimer: Yes, I know how powerful playing lands and cards directly from the top of your deck is, I've just run into the problem of running into multiple lands with the card.

Maybe I should just succumb to UG so I can run Future Sight AND Exploration effects.
>>
>>48216329
I assume they mean "rare" tribal as in not shit like Humans, Zombies or Elves.
>>
>>48216569
It is a powerful card advantage machine if your playgroup doesn't have a lot of ways to remove enchantments, but otherwise it is expensive and fragile and has the chance to whiff like you mentioned. It is very good if you run cantrips and top though, plus combos with a lot of things

black and red doesn't really have an issue with offense. About the cards in hand, they will be just as useful in the graveyard, except maybe for one or two. Also, i think you're forgetting he makes EVERY opponent sacrifice. One guy based on token, we can control in other ways. But i doubt every opponent will do that. Every time he enters the game, Malfegor will make a huge impact, which is more than we can say for most commanders.

Pedantry,
>>
>>48224278
It's not shuffling. Period. You aren't randomizing shit, it's easy to use it to cheat, and it takes way more time than just actually shuffling. Do a pile count of 11 piles of 9 every now and then to make sure you have enough cards, but beyond that it should not be part of your normal shuffling routine.

>>
>>48223753
Wrong. Manifest isn't a token
>>
>>48224294
Again, pedantry. The intention was obvious. In this case, the piles are to break up clumps that were made during deck construction. This wasn't a "normal shuffling guide", it was about randomizing a newly made deck.
>>
>>48224352
Yeah, obviously. But not all legendary Eldrazi need to be fuckhuge colossi. Maybe something like a smaller, more cunning hunter Eldrazi that got a local reputation.
>>
>>48224262
Anon, hate to break it to you, but pile shuffling into 3 piles after you've already pile shuffled just ensures you're lands are as janked as possible.
>>
>>48224363
Reread it.
>Whenever a nontoken face-up creature you control dies
>nontoken face-up creature

A manifested card isn't a token, but it certainly isn't face-up.
>>
>>48224366
>break up clumps
The point of shuffling is not to break up clumps, it's to randomize a deck. Sometimes a randomized deck has clumps. If your normal shuffling isn't changing the clumps AT ALL every game, then you're not shuffling right.
>>
What's fun support and synergy in five color manifest? My first draft was awful.
>>
>>48224374
Anon, I hate to break it to you but you're bad at reading instructions. You aren't pile shuffling again, you're combining three of the stacks you made in the first step.

A 5-mana Courser of Kruphix effect in blue certainly isn't the end of the world and would be decently playable. The upside is there though.

I don't run it in every blue deck, in fact I only run it in Ixidor (because he's in the art), but it does a lot of work. I just always find it on the cutting block though once more synergistic cards are available. It just screams "good stuff."
>>
>>48218228
Elfball is a singular boring strategy. At least Newzuri has a ton of different synergies and combos available to him and makes an interesting deck that's buildable in many different ways. I've played him as goodstuff Birthing Pod but also thought about brewing tribal fliers and morphs.

>>48224387
You're missing the point and it's not worth trying to clarify it for you.
>>
>>48224423
No, I'm not missing the point. If your shuffling isn't changing huge clumps of lands every game, then one of two things is happening:

1) You aren't shuffling enough
2) Sometimes shit happens.

Pile counting will only help your draws if you're cheating. It's no different than mana weaving. Either you're shuffling enough afterwards to undo what you just did (making it a waste of time), or you aren't (which means you're cheating).
>>

>>
>>48224432
>cool art
>easy casting cost
>objectively inferior to Ayli in every way
Actually, I like it. The more I think about it, the better that card gets. You really only have to give your opponent 9 life before you can ping them for a net of 6 each turn. Black/White cantrips would be a thing. Give it 1 more colourless mana and shroud, then you have a real winner on your hands.
>>
>>48223506
>Ishkanah that low

She's a lot better than she looks. She goes infinite with Nim Deathmantle and Ashnod's Altar and then she basically has "B: Kill someone." She brings 6/11 worth of beef to the field and can randomly blow people out. Someone just Craterhoof + Avenger of Zendikar'd into you? Arachnogenesis and then just kill them on your turn.

She's not even a super Spider tribal deck, you run a couple of utility spiders and the rest is a GB control deck. Run Conspiracy if you wish to turn all your guys into Spiders.

In Doran she is essentially a 5/5 for 5 that brings 3 2/2's with her. She's like an 11/11 for 5.

I think she's the strongest commander for the set honestly.
>>
>>48224430
Statistically speaking, a 100 card deck needs to be shuffled about 9 times to be sufficiently randomized.

The number of times a deck needs to be shuffled gets smaller as the deck gets smaller. Splitting the deck into piles and then shuffling the piles means you can break up a large deck, sufficiently randomize each smaller piece, then combine those randomized pieces in an equally distributed fashion.
>>
>>48224491
Pile. Counting. Is. Not. Shuffling.

If you are specifically arranging your deck a certain way, you are doing the OPPOSITE of randomizing it. Either learn to shuffle a 100 card deck or play a different format.

That's actually an educated opinion. Well done.

>>
>>48224503

>>
>>48224511
Actually, that was the only point of feedback I had. I thought 3 life was a little too much, then I realized you could Tainted Remedy into lightning bolting people with spot removal.
>>
>>48224519
I don't really like 2mrakul as a Commander. It's not terribly easy to enable the cheapening effect in colorless (no colorless enchantments, only 8 total instant/sorceries, most of which are expensive), and unless you have Ugin's Nexus on board it's very likely that the 'give them an extra turn' effect will fuck you up pretty hard, unless you pull some politics by using their resources to fuck up Opponent A and getting them to not hit you on the crackback. I feel like there's better options for colorless Commanders.
>>
>>48224540
So what point are you making that I'm missing? So far I've just seen you defend 'nurr it takes fewer shuffles to randomize a smaller deck' as an excuse to waste your time counting out piles, shuffling those piles, then half-assed mashing them together instead of spending a grand total of maybe 45 seconds just shuffling like a normal person.
