People are idiots - they see expensive cards in Modern and even Standard and, without understanding the changes in how cards are supplied, dream of their own lucky pulls getting up to that kind of value in the future. They figure it's valuable now, so it'll only get more valuable in the future as the available supply dries up once printing is done.
Others get into Magic from hearing stories about stuff like expensive old cards or some of the crazy things that happened in the past. This new blood is important to Wizards, because they sure as shit aren't going to learn the game and get started at FNMs and stuff with those old cards. At worst, they'll get a gift of some cheap cards from an established player's collection of junk, who had to buy packs to get those anyway.
Either way, the existence of a secondary market with absurd prices helps support Wizards, even if they aren't selling those cards themselves. Anything that generates interest in MtG in general contributes to their market.
